I would recommend you do every bit of PT for your opposite side as you do for your surgery side. Do everything equal side to side. Don't go and build up the opposite, then the surgery side has that much further to catch back up, actually increasing the chances of reinjuring. As you address both side equally, you will erase the bias you might develop naturally with surgery and atrophy.

    see sig for mods.....
Pretty uncommon. I've had back surgery and hip and knee replacements, and did have a clavicle reconstruction from a compound facture. My .02? It doesn't matter what sling they give you. I had my arm taped to my body for 2 weeks, then a sling. Most important is to DO YOUR PT as they direct, and take ALL your pain meds. Too many people cheat on PT and go short on pain meds trying to be a hero and do not do PT and recovery because of pain from the PT and recovery.

I am 4 years out from the hip and knee replacements, and you (nor I) would ever know I had them other than gnarly scars. Same for the back and neck. Unfortunately, the clavicle and shoulder not so much. But I was 20 and dumb.............

Take ALL your pain meds, do your PT.

NFN, but I staved off a total knee replacement for 10 years with supplements, mainly Turmeric and MSM. In fact, the ONLY reason I had the knee was because the hip was necessary from blowing out the labrum and destroyed the joint. The surgeon said my knee was so bad out of alignment that it would wear out the hip joint. Thing was I did NOT have severe pain, though it was very arthritic. I credit the MSM and Turmeric for being completely arthritis pain free. Not sure of your situation, but I would put off unnecessary cutting as long as possible.

I plan on doing the PT. Hopefully won’t need too many. I’ll keep a sling or some sort of support on after being cleared if I forget that I need to not use it (the side being operated on, is my dominant side)

Common theme here muscle man. Do PT. Don't be stubborn. You don't have to listen to us old farts. But doing so will help your process. Enter old age at your own risk is all I really have to say.

Do you have ice packs yet? I’d get two packs (3 is even better), just so that you can rotate them in and out of the freezer.

Supplementing those ice packs with an ice bucket machine as well. It’s a small price to pay for pain management as well as a quicker recover to help keep the swelling down.

I had a foot surgery back in early 2019. Three plates and 14 screws were installed. The recovery was very slow and VERY VERY painful. I started out at a fit 6’, 161lbs, 7.5% body fat. After about 3 months of being laid up flat on my back on the couch 23 hours and 55 minutes a day. I dropped 20lbs, down to 141lbs and a very unhealthy 4% body fat. My foot would hurt like crazy any time i would stand up, so my pain was easier to manage if i just quit eating and drinking so i didn’t have to get up to go to the bathroom. I had the surgery thursday night, and the doc prescribed juuuust enough oxy to get me through the weekend. I had to plead and plead with the pharmacy to get my prescription refilled. Truth be told, the oxy didn’t do much for my pain management…neither did the edibles that my sister hooked me up with. You probably won’t hear this from anyone else in the world, but my only saving grace from the pain was that i got covid about 2 weeks after my surgery. It made me tired enough that it allowed me to get 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep for two nights in a row. I was SUPER bummed that i only had covid for about 3 days, because once it was gone, my foot pain came right back and i was back to getting about 3 hours of interrupted sleep a night.

I had a second surgery 8 months after my first one to remove all the hardware. Reason being was that every step i took for those 8 long months was very painful. i must have lost all the enamel from my teeth every time i took a step. It took me close to two years to put that 20lbs back on, and right now i’m back at around 161lbs. My body type is very similar to Shifty’s, and it’s almost impossible for me to put on muscle. I have to work out overtime to put the weight on.

Swimming in a pool was the best PT for my foot. I don’t know how well it works on the shoulder though.

Not sure if it's the same thing, but I've had an acromioplasty on both shoulders (2007 and 2008). Recovery honestly was super quick, although I'm one of those freaks of nature who heals in like 1/2 the time for some reason. Would totally do it again if needed, though thankfully I don't need to, as they both worked as they should have. :)

I completely neglected to provide an update on my situation. Up until last week, I was in a sling, and the first few days were quite challenging. My wife generously took a week off work to help me out—she made my meals, cut my food, and even assisted me with showering! It was quite the experience. The morning after my surgery, she caught me outside trying to mow the lawn with one arm, and she came running out, quite alarmed!

I had my first physical therapy session a few weeks ago, and the therapist told me I’m on the “fast track” to recovery. After that appointment, I received guidelines for daily physical therapy, which primarily focuses on mobility. If I don’t stick to this regimen, my shoulder might revert to its “revised” state, resulting in a restricted range of motion. I’ve been diligently doing my PT exercises every day, even though it’s not exactly enjoyable. I’m being cautious at the gym, avoiding any intense workouts for all muscle groups, so that my shoulder can heal without stressing the repair of other muscle fibers.
I have my next follow-up appointment for physical therapy tomorrow morning at 7 AM annoyed. I’m hopeful that the news will continue to be positive.

My follow-up PT appointment went well. PT said I am still ahead and am on the fast track. They gave me a few exercises to add for rotator cuff health. No follow-up PT visit needed unless I request it.

Good on you for staying within the pt guidelines. Seems like recovery is moving along nicely for you.
