One of our first dogs was a cattle dog mix (avatar pic), Darla. There is something about cattle dog energy that is very ‘special’.

Oddly enough Darla surprised me with her keen judge of character. T’was a Sunday mid-morning and she started barking at two guys walking down the sidewalk while she was inside on the couch, not normal for her. About 5 minutes later gunshots rang out and the two clowns are running down the street. At that time there was some drug dealing going on a few houses north of us - obviously that is where the shenanigans occurred. Ever since then I pay close attention to how our dogs react to people.

They're all 3 rescues. Dino (cattle mix) was dropped off at the shelter for being too high energy and was on doggy xanax when we got him lol. Jack and Spock keep him busy. Still needs to be crated when we leave the house or something will undoubtedly be chewed up by him while we are gone.

Right on, adopt don’t shop! Except for our first dog (a yellow lab) all our others have been rescued and have come with some ‘issues’.

Darla liked to chew holes in bedspreads and pillow cases as well as eat her Mother’s footie socks. But only when we weren’t home. We ended up crating her when we were gone, she loved it. So much so that she would go in her crate for naps when we were home.
A couple years ago I was digging a hole for a new rose bush and uncovered a small pink footy, it must have been in the earth for at least 5 years, after passing through Darla, both my wife and I laughed and cried about it. You see Darla was taken from us when she got separated from our pack and was hit by a car... her leaving us like that will never be right.

    Hug your dogs everyday!

They do this on their own lol they always stay In the same kennel together. They have their own separate kennels but always end up together.

She is growing. Posing with same toy: she carries it around and in poorer shape than before.

This guy showed up at thanksgiving then again right before Christmas. Covered in burrs, ticks and fleas. We posted him on local lost pets page and at the shelter but no takers. Took him to the vet today and he has heart worms so maybe that was why he was dumped. He starts treatment on Monday and the vet says he’s young and they expect he will come though just fine. So he ours now. His name is Tripp and since he’s always under foot I think it’s a good name for him.

Thanks but that goes to my wife. Treatment will be $700 and she didn’t blink a eye. She said go for it. We took a kitten in a few months ago that was hit by a car and had it scheduled to be spayed next week. She said we will put it off another month to get him what he needs.

Middle dog in my post quoted here came with HW from OK. It was really tough on him and hard on us, but it’s totally achievable.

You’re a good man for welcoming him into your home and making the investment (time, $, emotion) to get him healthy. He came with a good name. Please keep us posted.

Of course. Credit where credit is due, he’s legally my gf’s dog, but we co-manage the pack. PM if you have questions and we can share our experience.

Also, consider him a flight risk until proven otherwise. We learned that the hard way. ;)

You sure this isn’t your dog? He’s ran off twice. The first time I found him two streets away and we live in the country. I pulled up and he jumped right in. Second time he made it across the street. I grabbed our other pup and he ran right up to her.
