After years of wanting a dog and pestering my wife about it, we finally brought home a dog yesterday. whoot!

We went through the Lucky Lab Rescue in central Texas and I found this girl on their website:

She is a mix of a Lab and a Texas Blue Lacy. Her name was Gemma, but we changed it to Lacy. My wife calls her "little miss Lacy Blue" :) She is 3 years old and is about 65 pounds, but is probably 10 pounds over weight. She is shorter than a typical lab, but she is very stocky. She is super sweet and gentle, but she is afraid of new people. When I went to visit her at the dog ranch, she saw me and immediately started shaking. She did not approach me and actually wanted to run away from me and her handler. However, the handler gave me the leash and Lacy followed me on a walk. With 10 minutes, she calmed down and I was able to pet her, but she would not make eye contact with me. Within 30 minutes of interacting with her, I was able to hand feed her and then she started to make eye contact. By the end of the visit, she laid down and I could rub her belly. She really wants to trust people, but she needs a calm and confident owner to bring out her personality.

After talking to the folks at the dog ranch, I found out why she is so timid around new people. Her previous owners had her for 2 years. In their home, they had 2 other dogs and a couple of small children. The household was chaotic and the animals and the children had very few rules. One day, while Lacy was sleeping, their 9 year old boy thought it would be funny to sneak up on Lacy and scare her. When the boy did that, Lacy turned around and snapped at him. She actually did bite him and then the owners immediately surrendered her to the lab rescue. From what I have read about Blue Lacy's is that they are a more sensitive breed and need a calmer environment. The high energy of that household and the 2 years of tormenting from that child helped to make Lacy timid.

Well, that works out for my wife and I, because we now get to own this sweet, calm, and gentle dog.

Here we are taking her home. The ride was very stressful, however. She was scared and she kept pacing, turning around, and slipping out of her collar, leash, and harness. We had to pull over about 6 times to secure her. The 50 mile drive home took about 90 minutes.

When we got her home, she was exhausted and just laid down on the garage floor. With the mix of at least the 2 breeds, the hair on her back and neck is longer than on her sides. This gives her kind of a mohawk look on her back. Also, the fur on her back has a blue shimmer in the light.

We brought her to her crate and she immediately jumped in. We left her there for a while so that she could relax:

Another reason that we decided to adopt Lacy is that she is she is indifferent towards cats. Here is our cat investigating Lacy. You can see that Lacy is looking away from the cat. This little 8 pound cat is owning the 65 pound dog :)

The cat also owns the dog bed in the living room. Lacy has yet to lay on the bed:

Here is the first open contact between the cat and the dog. Lacy totally ignored the cat:
    https://youtu.be/NClkWvF80Ig

Lacy just wanted to be near me. You can see that blue shimmer on her back:

We sat down for dinner and we watched a movie and Lacy just wanted to hang out with us. Although, she wont lay on the dog bed in the living room:

We got a second dog bed to go under the desk in my office. She loves that bed and stays there when I am in my office:

Lacy is very polite and well behaved so there hasn't been a need for many corrections. She doesn't beg, jump, whine, bark, counter surf, etc. She pretty much follows you, lays down near you, and wants a little love. However, she is very smart and is willing to take instruction. When I first started to walk her, she immediately took off in front of me and pulled hard on the leash. After about 30 minutes of corrections to slow her down and to heal, she learned to walk along side of me without pulling on the leash. We are now able to walk at any speed and she will stay at my side. I also have taught her to stay at an open doorway and to wait for permission before going through the doorway.

It is amazing what a little love can do for a dog. We have only had her for a day and she is becoming an absolute sweetheart. This is the perfect dog for us :)

We have 5 currently in the house. 2 shepherds and 3 mutts. One of the mutts belongs to my son and will be moving out in a month or two.

The Shepherds are the only ones that regularly go for a ride.

Bear and Shadow in the back of my wife’s Tacoma circa 2014:

Today in the back of the Tundra (my wife takes way better pictures):

Not sure if it’s just their age or the taller truck (thinking it’s the age), but they may need a ramp soon to “load up”.

Great story. I have a mix that wouldn't come to me when I rescued her 7 years ago. She was scared for a while and sat on top of my lab. She now is a confident pup and loves everyone if me or my lab is around. One with my lab when she was a baby and the other with my parent's pup now

Here's Abbie a couple of years ago. Pretty much my view when I would sit in my chair and she on her couch. I came home from work Thurs a week ago and she had passed away in her sleep. No warning.

    20171017_2000541.jpg

So yesterday in Landrum SC, we poked our heads in an art gallery and what was on the wall?

Yeah, it's on our wall now.

Y'all go give your pups a hug.

Thank you guys, yes it's been very hard with no warning. When they are sick you have time to spend with them, say good bye. We do have two others, they are taking it well, they were here with her so I'm glad she was not alone when she passed.

After having lost my previous dog, a 14yr old pit, I rescued this Chihuahua mix named Lady Gaga two years ago. Her first owner could't take care of her anymore and had to give her up. I call her Lady for short.
Here she's on top of a tree carved into a bear thats sitting in the bed of my Tacoma. This is on my property in Arizona and we had just got there after an 11hr drive from SoCal, about to watch the sunset and ready to camp out for the night under about 10million stars. Wish we were there now!
    IMG_2078.jpg

And then on the drive back home she finally falls asleep in her booster seat in the passenger seat. Shes my little buddy. Always by my side and always wants to be with me, actually very affectionate and has been a Godsend after the other pup passed away. Love her to pieces!

I rescued him when he was around 5 months old. He was covered in fungus and missing most of his hair. Treated him daily for 3 months before I got it under control. He’s turned out to be the best hunting partner I’ve ever had.
