Who's got dogs? Post your pup!

How old is he? Our SIL’s is going on 7. Starting too gray on the muzzle. Mals are amazing animals!

Just turned 12. I've had him since he was 10 months old. He was born in Holland and was the youngest dog I've ever flown over to start working with. I normally would not even consider flying a dog over that young; its too easy for them to have a bad experience with the flight and for it to end up creating significant nerve issues for them. I took a chance with him (albeit a very educated guess that it would go well), and we haven't looked back. Truly awesome pup!!!!

The breed is amazing. Such intense drives, personality and trainability w/these animals. The one unfortunate thing about the breed is folks who watch a movie or a few youtube videos of them and think, "I need to get me one of those"... then end up buying one and can't figure out why the dog is destroying everything or biting the shit out people. It usually ends bad for the dog, and its not his or her fault. In my time, I've come across very (and I mean very few) mals or dutch shepherds that exhibit "true" unwarranted aggression. I just wish people who were wanting to be first-time mal owners or folks that find themselves with one they are struggling with, I wish they would reach out for help and guidance from someone who knows and understands the breed.

 

Well put, our SIL is of the same mindset. Too many couch potatoes getting high energy dogs and then bitching about bad behavior. When they visit, his Mal is a completely different dog, more relaxed and more free too run. Lots of room too stretch his legs. Can actually be a dog for a while. It’ll be interesting too see him when he retires.

 

Safe to say he likes the new trailer.

 

This is a great observation, and true for many sporting and hunting breeds. I have a yellow lab that is 110% prey driven and she would not do well in a docile, sedentary household. People need to make a solid commitment and be prepared for 7-8 years of exercise and training work when deciding on pups like this.

Oh yeah ! The vet said he’ll be between 100-120lbs .

 

Exactly, we walk our shepherd 6 days a week. We’re lucky where we have a driveway 3/4 mile long and with the attached properties driveway we can get 2 miles in. Plus when I check mail she usually goes with me and rides up too the mailbox and runs back too the house behind the truck. She sleeps well….

Yessir! His harness attaches to the rear so if there’s an accident, he doesn’t fly through the windshield.

 

What happens if you hit the gas too hard in Tow/Haul mode??? Does he end up in the back seat?

He does! We have no idea what breed he is.

 

Not sure on this end either... It looks like they both have some form of a terrier in the them, but not sure. I found him at a local vet while I was waiting on one of mine to get checked in for surgery. I was in the back helping out w/prep because they were short handed, and I see this little dude w/his back leg all wrapped up. I asked what happened to him, and they said they had no idea. He was brought in by animal control w/a really bad leg fracture and was in the process of recovering from surgery (awesome that they didn't just put him down w/o having an owner readily available)... Anyhow, I asked if I could hang w/him for a bit while I was waiting for mine. What an incredible disposition this little dude had. Solid nerves, no trust issues in spite of the fact his leg had just been worked on and he didn't know me from Adam.

Anyhow, long story short, my In-Laws were starting to look for a new pup as their Airedale had passed a few months ago. My wife's father was really starting to miss his buddy, and it was time for them to find a new companion. I called animal control and asked if they had any owner info, and they said as of now they had nothing. I told them I'm pretty sure I'd have a home for him if the owners are not found and asked if I could "borrow" him to bring over to the In-Laws house once he was feeling better from his surgery... A/C was fine with that, and the Vet said he would be good to go in a couple of days. So, I picked him up at the vet a few days later, ran him by in-laws and what a happy, full of life, playful little dude. My father-in-law was really enjoying him, so we called A/C to find out his disposition and they said after the mandatory wait period to verify no one claims him, he'd be ours if we wanted.

We ended up offering to handle his post-surgery care and follow ups w/the vet in the meantime (ya know to reduce the number of dogs they'd be caring for in the meantime). A/C agreed, and so the in-laws 'fostered' him during his recovery for about a week, and about a week later A/C called and said that could take formal ownership of the pup; which they eagerly did!!!! He's been in the family ever since.

On a side night my Mal that just turned 12 and him are great buddies.... When their pup stays w/us, my Mal stays at his side most of the time!

Good on you for taking that little dude in! What a great story! They seem to have similar temperaments also. He’s crazy playful, and wicked smart. He gets along with all other dogs, he and our pittie were immediate friends.

 

Best copilot I could ask for. She rested/slept leaning on the console for a while.



Then, down a slow road she wanted to have her head out the window. Bit of ear flapping and a happy Pug.

 

I'm pretty sure she thought she was passing a biscuit farm...

 

She doesn't actually like biscuits. Certain treats from the Petco bin that you weigh, but she doesn't like traditional dog biscuits.

 

My wife makes about 90% of the dog treats we give now. If you haven't tried anything like it, here's an easy one that's summer appropriate and a favorite of our pups:

Mix plain yogurt w/fresh blueberries
Place silver dollar size 'discs' on a parchment paper lined cookie tray
Freeze for a few hours
Serve straight up and enjoy!!!!
