If the noise is only present when stepping on the gas, then it might be the rear diff. If not, probably wind noise from gaps?

this is my exact issue and the Toyota Field Tech is claiming this is normal and they don’t repair under warranty which is bs. Can anyone who has had this resolved by warranty send me their VIN so I can build a case? I have no metal shavings in my diff but the whine / wooooo starts loudly at 75+

Same symptoms for everyone in this thread. I can definitely tell you that my dealership solved this issue. I can never be so happier with their field tech. They even updated the ECM to be more responsive and the lag during rolling stop also was resolved.

How many miles did you drive already after it's been replaced?

I've got mine in the shop now. They called back saying the Techs thought it was wind noise up front. However, I don't understand how it would be "wind noise" when it goes away after letting up on the gas pedal. It is only noticeable when you are on the gas. I told them to check the diff fluid anyways to check for shavings and even gave them the case number above to have some reference. We'll see what happens.

Just got the call back from the dealer, they found metal in the diff fluid and are replacing the rear differential. This forum is awesome. I also have a ton of respect for the dealer service rep I was in contact with, he was incredibly nice and patient. I have all good things to say about my local dealer. They've been quick to do what I've asked them to do.

Don't really understand how they have so many Tundras where they're finding metal shavings in the differential. I get that the engine recall, it is newer, they don't have everything quite worked out. But the differential? Maybe I'm wrong but I don't feel like there have been any significant technological enhancements to differentials in a looooong time. Seems like it should be a rock-solid component by this stage. Perhaps someone here can enlighten me...

I think that dealers can easily say that they found metal debris in the differential just to get warranty job of replacing the diff... A nice $4500 warranty job for the dealership service shop

I don't really agree. I had to ask them to check the diff fluid. I kept saying I think it was the diff but they thought it was wind noise elsewhere. I was told I would have to pay for the diff fluid install if it checked out to be fine. They went ahead and looked and found the metal shavings. If they were in it for the warranty money, they would have been checking that without me having to ask.

I just pray for you that new diff will fix the noise issue. Unfortunately it's been 50/50 for the forum crowd so far

If it doesn't, they'll have the truck back to fix it and I'll show them this forum where some have needed to go through a couple to get it fixed. I'm not too worried at the end of the day because I'm fresh into the truck and have plenty of warranty.

Doesn't mean they'll replace it again for you the second time. They may say it's a truck characteristic

Or they may replace it... Depends if you get lucky with whoever approved these repairs, probably Toyota field tech.

Metal shavings in the diff fluid can never be considered "truck characteristic". Plus they already acknowledged that there is an issue, so if the same symptoms occur, by default, they'll have to agree we have the same issue, so they keep digging. Or they'll owe me a good chunk of change.

Again, depends on your dealer and Toyota field tech.

They replaced my diff once, no result. Then after 3 trips to the dealer, then trip to second dealer and call to get Toyota Corp, I was unsuccessful so far in getting it replaced second time... While others had dealerships beg them to replace it for 3-4 times

I guess I don't quite understand how you could possibly have that be the outcome. If all agreed there was an issue, and the issue wasn't resolved, I would be on the phone with all the lemon law lawyers I can be on the phone with as well as Toyota.

Are you having the noise as well as metal shavings in the diff fluid? And they say metal shavings in the diff fluid is normal?

On my 2025 platinum they already changed the design of the mirrors. There is no gap anymore.
Also, i have a slight wind noise above 55MPH. Nothing significant. My wife says she does not hear it. Being an OCD i used painter's tape on all the doors, windows. No gap left unsealed. Tried it. The noise stays the same, no more and no less. I guess it comes through the glass. If i turn the fake 8V engine sound back ON, i dont hear it.
Will have to learn to live with it :cool:

I had posted this in a different thread, but worth reposting for other owner’s benefit. I have a ‘24 SR5 TRD Sport, started hearing the “howl” around 3k miles at same speed intervals as others 40-45 & 70-80. Dealer has been great and long story short, rear carrier assembly has been replaced 3x in 12k miles. I am on my 4th for the vehicle, factory installed + 3 replacements. Clearly there is a bigger issue than just the diff. Needless to say I am disappointed, I really loved this truck, but have decided to apply for lemon law arbitration for a refund. Sorry to hear others are having this issue, good luck all.

Are you positive you can lemon law it just because you're hearing little bit noise from the rear?

KAP, yeah I would consider a rear differential failing a safety issue, in my state if you have a safety related issue repaired 2x within 2yr/24k it is eligible. Non-safety related issues are 4 repair attempts. I have a arb hearing coming up, Will let you know how it goes.
