He was pretty well known around Cav units. Commanded some units in Germany. I didn't really follow his career, so don't know everywhere he was stationed. We were good friends as 1st Lts. during flight school in '68, went to Nam at the same time. He was a crazy guy, absolutely fearless, and his fearlessness earned him a Distinguished Service Cross while in Nam (for you readers who don't know military awards, DSC is second only to Congressional Medal of Honor). He medically retired some time ago as a full bird colonel, just prior to being considered for a star, as he was messed up pretty bad physically. He was an Army brat, commissioned via Arty OCS. Last I saw him was in mid 2013 at a get together at Ft Sill. He had recently suffered a second stroke, and was wheelchair bound. Jerry died in Feb 2015. One of our finest. If you are so inclined, Google his name. There are several commentaries about him. Here's one of them: http://www.benning.army.mil/armor/earmor/content/issues/2014/OCT_DEC/Thurman.html

no matter what you have been told, it will probably be the opposite of what you think. Get EVERYTHING in order and in writing prior to leaving.

I'm very glad we don't have any Navy Rangers with the Maine 1/5 in here. Seems as if yoda folk definitely represent themselves well and "aint bout no bullshit"!!!

My finger was getting tired from hitting "like" so i decided to post my version of an enormous amount of gratitude to everyone that has posted their experience, service, and sacrifice for our country. I never served anything like you guys but i was a Wilderness First Responder in the hills of North Carolina and though it was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like what you guys have done, I can say that serving a greater cause than myself brings great pride. I can't even imagine how much pride you guys all have that you've served in the capacity that you have.

Truly, i can't imagine what it would be like have the experience that you all have under your belts, the good, the bad, and the atrocity that you've seen.

From the depths of my inner being.....I respect everyone of you even more now that i know what you've done for my security, and that of my kids.

    Thank you!!
