When is it too late to color match chrome front?

    Hi everyone,

I've had my 2018 since Nov 2017. It sits outside. Is there a length of time before trying to color match the front bumpers and grill before the body color itself is slightly different than that of a new coat of paint on the chrome parts?

    Thanks

    Still none :(
Ideally, your shop should color match your truck's paint, not just rely on the paint code. Even the painted grills/bulges you buy from Toyota often don't match exactly (and the worst examples look like the wrong color completely).

If you have a GOOD body shop in your area, they can match your paint color. I say this from experience. Bought a used red BMW K1300GT that came with a top case in silver. Took it to one of the finer shops in town and instead of just taking the usual paint number route, they brought out a paint chip set that better matched the actual color on the bike at the time. Comparing the original color specified versus the actual color was strikingly different. I was very glad we went that route since it was a dead-on match that would not have been had they used the standard color specified.

Thank you, both. I didn't realize color matching faded paint was a thing. Good deal :)

It might not be faded whatsoever. The real issue is paint colors change from batch to batch. There is no exact match. There's pretty close. This is true in any industry that relies on matching colors.

I waited over a year before painting mine, and my auto body guy did awesome job, and than he did my tow mirrors.

I just had mine done. The painter did not care what color/code, he used a paint analyzer gun to match the paint. Additionally he said that the color needs to be slightly different applied over plastic vs metal. Mine turned out very nice, and matches much better than my 16 Platinum did from the factory.

Out of curiosity, did you disassemble and then take it over in pieces and have everything painted? Also, how long did it take to complete?

I disassembled everything, and took in the pieces. Didn’t save much, maybe $125, but I’m particular, and it allowed me to do some wiring and lightbar while down. They had to do them twice, so 1 week, but would of been 2 days normally.

I've been contemplating having my grill surround/bulge painted vs. buying the stock painted parts so I can have the bumper caps painted as well and everything color-match perfectly...just need to get off my butt and start looking for a shop to do it.

I'm having this same dilemma. I have the mod itch to dechrome everything. But, do I color match the bumper caps, or go with black? Leaning black.

This is exactly what I have, except with chrome. Thanks for the picture; this is what I want.

I bought a 2015 about 2 months ago with 9,000 miles and it is at the shop now getting media blasted (bumpers, bulge, mirror caps, door handles). i got a pro grill also that is getting painted there also. i am not worried about it matching 100% (didn't even ask what method he used for the paint), it will look way better than chrome. lol
i was more interested in finding some one that would prep the chrome honestly. the first 3 shops i went to didn't even want to mess with it, and they were big shops. i didn't even know about the guy that is doing it until i went to a vinyl place and they told me about him.

Yea your truck looks really great now (I mean who are we kidding, stock cement still rocks). I went with the debadging route instead of the blacked out badges. Though I kept the "TRD" sticker. My wife thinks I should remove that, too.

Looks great! That’s funny about the TRD sticker, my wife said “you are going to take that off right?”. For me it is the only thing left that makes it a TRD, so it stays for now, and I have a few red accents to add that will tie it in. I de-badged my 16 so carefully, but there was the tiniest bit of clear damage, couldn’t see unless you tried, but it irked me, so I re-badged it. These are blackout Toyota emblem covers, they are way better than I hoped.

Ever considered replacing it with the all black sticker? It looks a lot cleaner than the red in my opinion.

Yes, I actually have through about that. Thanks for the reminder. I'll probably go sticker shopping soon.

I left the TRD one for the same reason. I'm not a "look at me" show off type of guy. But there's something about having that sticker there that feels good. Granted, I don't think you can get Cement in non-TRD.
