This isn't the worst design by far. My brother and dad are a mechanics. One of them told me about a starter they had to change that was underneath the intake manifold, inside of the engine in the lifter valley. As an automotive engineer with a background in mechanic work, (worked in Dad's shop as a kid) it blew my mind. That's the only starter replacement I've ever heard of that you need an intake manifold gasket to complete the job. I think it was a Ford or a Chrysler sedan, but I can't remember for sure.

The Tundra 4.7 is like this. Nice way to bake a starter.

Also the Cadillac Northstar has this same shitty design.

WTF is it with these engineers who design this shit? They should be made to work on them.

You jinxed me. The day after I read this thread the first time my starter died without warning @ 182k miles.

It took me about 7 hours to replace it in my driveway. The bolts on the exhaust manifold heat shield were rusted in place and the bolt heads were so rusted the socket wouldn't grab them. It would've taken longer if I hadn't unbolt the motor mount and jacked the motor up to get the old starter out and new starter in.

I just had the started replaced at the dealer on my 2007 5.7L rear wheel drive. Not bad, got 14 years and 185380 out of it.
Would have tried it myself, but did some research and wasn't up to the task; as it is my daily driver and didn't want it down for a few days.

    ^^this!
Mine kicked it at 165k, also prior to acquiring it i found out that it was a PA Farm truck. So I can't even imagine how much service it was put through before failure. I attempted but ultimately sent it to my mechanic so it wasn't down for days.

Still on the original starter (and alternator) on my 2007 Double Cab Limited with 240k miles (383,500 kms) and that's with temperatures that range from -50degC to +45degC. I do have a Genuine alternator ready with a Genuine starter on order (should be here in 2 weeks) just in case. I may have the alternator and radiator changed proactively (radiator has 300k kms and a few bent fins). I know they won't last forever...

I've been very lucky electrically with this truck <knocks on wood>...

2007 Double Cab Limited with 198,000 original starter. I am worried, last summer during a hot day it just clicked when I turned it over. I knew the battery was old so I checked the wires and the negative was a bit loose. Closed the hood and it started right up. I ended up replacing the battery, and haven't had a problem since. I am looking at doing a motor mount upgrade, and think that would be a good time to change that sucker out, since I'll be there anyway.

Just had the starter changed today in my 2007 Double Cab Limited with a brand new Genuine part as preventative maintenance. Truck has 241k miles on it and was still on the original starter. It still worked flawlessly, but with 14 years and all those miles, failure was only a matter of time and it would doubtlessly fail at the absolute worst possible time/location. Original was a 28100-0S010, and the replacement was a 28100-0S050 (latest and greatest, supercedes my original part number). No obvious issue with the old one, just the motor case itself had a bit of surface rust in a couple of spots (normal for 14 years in severe winter service I guess). New starter definitely sounds different than the old one....new one is higher pitched and seems to crank faster, but works great (so far) and I hope it's a good one. It has big shoes to fill...;)

Just replaced mine, what an awfull job. 175000 miles 2008 double cab 5.7 4x4. I'm pretty sure it was the solinoid because when it would start the starter was nice and strong. Then other times it would just click. those two inner heat shields were a pain in the ass, even with the motor jacked up an inch.

So how far does the engine need to be raised to replace the starter without doing any damage?
    Asking for future reference..

Maybe 2 inches? You start feeling the pressure of the other motor mount around that point.

When Toyota repaired the damaged parts, they blamed an aftermarket remote start kit.
