    In a conundrum....

Being disappointed with the lack of changes with the 2019 coming out....

While I would love to get a new Tundra as I have the luxury currently to choose between a 2018 and 2019; I am not happy with the older tech engine, ancient tranny, low MPG, lack of FFV in CA and lack of tech.
The Tundra would be one I would keep and hang onto based on my past experience with Tundra (1st gen).

If Toyota does a major model changeover that competes with the other truck manufacturers in 2020 or 2021, I have been tempted to get into a 2 year lease with a Ram 1500 eTorque pseudo hybrid I just test drove.

So since I have been lured into the dark side by the eTorque:

How is this for a thought:
Lease a 2019 RAM 1500 with high tech eTorque 5.7L Hemi, Carplay / AA, 360 surround cameras, 12" touchscreen infotainment, 22MPG cylinder deactivation management, HK/JBL 22 speaker sound system.... for 2 years at $450/month then return it and then hopefully the Tundra will be upgraded ???
Sort of a gap filling truck while I wait for an upgraded Tundra ???
    Your thoughts ?

Nice carp, catch him on the fly? Big fan of chasing the mud donkeys on fly gear! That being said, my new associate rep at work just picked up a new limited RAM and holy cow is that thing nice. Not cheap by any means though!

I saw one of the new Rams on the road the other day. In my opinion, that thing is ugly as hell. They had a pretty nice looking truck until now.

agreed, but after looking at it for a few days it started to grow on me a bit. His limited's interior absolutely put my platinum to shame.

Well its a Dodge.. really dont have to say more. First year models of a Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge product are notorious for having Gremlins.
Dont you think its odd that on a brand new so called award winning truck they are already offering substantial deals?
I watched the video on the Ram, it has some killer features that Id love to have but nothing that sways me from wanting a Tundra.

Its not secret, Toyota is always behind when it comes to tech.. but what they are not behind in is resale and reliabilty.
What matters most is what makes you happy, if you like the Ram, buy it..

I haven’t seen the interior, but I don’t have to to know it’s probably better. Toyota doesn’t do a great job in that department. My 2017 is barely different from my 2011.

We checked out new Sequoias a while back. The new one is completely identical to my wife’s 2012. It was the same truck with a new car smell. Of course, other than the headlights, they haven’t touched the Sequoia since 2007.

I was looking into one of the new 2019 1500 rams for a co-worker who is looking into maybe getting one. he just picked up a new grand Cherokee a few months back. he traded in a silverado 1500 that was about 13yrs old. looks like the wife has stolen it from him and makes him drive her old v6 rav4 now.

limited are very nice but you can option a Laramie better so you can pick and choose what you want. if you get a limited all the stuff you don't want is standard and you pay for it.

you can option a Laramie up to the same price point as a limited. I think the only thing you cant get is the color match pieces that are chrome on the Laramie.

edit : forgot to add, you sure you don't want to go 3yrs on the lease so you can get past the 1st year teething issues with a new gen?

No way in hell I'd ever buy a Dodge/Chrysler vehicle, if I'm tempted by any other brand full size truck it would be the F150 (another brand I've never trusted) or Sierra. I do agree that a 2 year lease might be the way to go until the 2020 hits, assuming Toyota catches up to the other brands by that time in terms of technology. I'd still just lease a 2018 or 19 Tundra though.

I'm seeing 2019 Tundras listed on dealer websites now but they all use stock photos. Hopefully another member will have one soon or post pics from a dealer.

Well I guess I need to jump brands, since Toyota is soooo far behind and don't offer a shit house in the Tundra. What the hell is wrong with them.

Who am I kidding, I'll never own anything but a Toyota, y'all can have all that tech bullshit, I'll ride by you while you're sitting at the dealership trying to get that high tech junk fixed. :poking:

Agree. I only buy Toyota. My 03 4Runner still runs great with 230k miles and I'll most likely keep it as a backup vehicle when I get my Tundra.

what about leasing a 2019 Tundra instead of that ugly Ram ? you might actually like it :) yes the engine/transmission is old but it's proven.
I actually like non FFV better.

Yup, carp on the fly - called a poor man's bonefish....

The RAM is huge with options and mind boggling for sure ranging from $30K to $70K...

Leasing is the smarter way so that you don't have to face the awful residual value.
With the low resale values, the dealers around me are all discounting this brand new platform - new makeover model that got released a few months ago by 10-20%!! CRAZY!

If Toyota upgrades the Tundra, I would be the first to drop the Ram and jump into a Tundra which I would want to own - not lease....

    Thanks for everyone's input!

hey, if it is not broke then don't fix it. Only problem with my interior is the fact that the back seat back does not fold forward. Coming from a Tacoma and having tons of storage it was a disappointment that Toyota changed the back seat. Change is not always for the better.

They eliminated a good bit of storage from gen 2 to 3 also. There were more overhead compartments, compartments in the doors, and a sweet spot for your tablet by the shifter.

Thinking on it, i doubt we will see much of any changes for the tundra in 2020. 07- big body launch, 10- updates, 14- gen 2, 18- new headlights and tech. Id bet its 2021 or 2022.

I say do it. Once I close on my house, I plan to do it as well. So you already talked numbers with the RAM dealer? What trim was the 24 month lease for $450/month? I'm leaning heavily towards the Limited.

I just don't want to get "stuck" with old tech Tundra as I would keep it - my wife says just get the 2018/2019 Tundra and if a newer model comes out, then trade it back in....

As for the RAM, I am quite smitten with all the neat features of the truck and since I would only lease a Chrysler product (never would own one).
For a on lot new 2019 RAM 1500 Laramie trim 4x2, $450 for 24/12 was the deal they were offering. Discounts as much as $8,000 depending on your region, makes a $50K truck way under the 1% rule for leasing.

Yea, I'm down to lease one and try it out. My dad has a 2016 Ram and it's been fine...but yea, I don't know about buying, but I would give it a go for a short lease term while waiting for the new Tundra that will hopefully look like it's from within the last 5 years :D

What's the 1% rule you speak of?

Why? 10k oil changes? I think 5k on the FFV is just Toyota covering their backside.

1% rule is a general lease monthly compared to MSRP - assumes ZERO drive off (except for first month lease payment) upon signing.

With low money factors and high residuals like the Chrysler products, it's easy to get under $0.0075 or .75% for leases.

Toyotas lease OK - about 1% in California with very little discounts and incentives/rebates compared to other areas of the US. People in other regions have leased at .6% which is like a $50K truck for $300 a month leases!

On the extreme side, the Porsche and Land Rover products, you are lucky to get 1.25%-1.5% leases...

Again, this assumes you roll in all monies (lease acquisition, taxes, title, reg, etc) into a zero drive off lease...

Check out LeaseHackr forum for more details.

I actually preferred the Tundras power train over the competition tbh. Yeah its been around since 07 but with the exception of the 6.2 GM (didn't test drive out of price range) they all felt just as powerful power wise. (EDIT: GM 5.3 felt doggy) My towing mileage is also better than my 13 Ram Hemi could do 10-11 compared to 8-10 Ram had better unloaded FE though. Best advice is buy/lease what you want it is your money after all and you being happy is all that matters. :)

Agreed. I drove the Ford 5.0, Tundra, Titan, and both GM engines. The 5.3 felt like I was driving a tank loaded up with bricks. The 6.2 also felt doggy until you got on it, then it felt great.
