My mileage has gotten worse over the course of the first 4K miles. My last trip was 1300 miles thru the flat plains of Colorado and Kansas to Missouri. I averaged only 16.8 mpg both directions. That was all highway averaging 75-80 mph most of the way. I do have 275/60R20 tires, so that's a small part of the poor mileage. I've also noticed my Distance to Empty after a fill up has gradually declined from 480 to 460 miles. Pretty disappointing.

I've always thought there was no real benefit to running higher octane fuel than the manufacturer recommends. But I may try a few tanks of 91 to see if my mileage improves any.

    http://calcnexus.com/fuel-cost-calc...rice1=3.89&price2=4.59&mpg1=17&mpg2=21&calc=1

but the big issue is if the maybe 2-3 mpg you get over regular gas is worth the cost increase?

    for me

the break even point for a tundra is 3 mpg for reg vs prem for me (3.89 vs 4.59 as of today). i would save $11

at 4 mpg the savings is $153 a year at 15k miles (which i would never hit, we avg 500 miles a month)

so the prem cost comes out negative loss in savings for us @ 500 miles a month.

    edit : actually its $4 at reg @ 6k miles, $61 at prem @ 6k miles.

12mpg city - lots of stop signs and traffic lights driving through SF, 35 min to work one way, and back daily. I drive 90% city

    16mpg highway - 70-80mph average speed

So... I've been wondering if somethings is really wrong with my truck or it's normal. My 2013 Ram hemi also gave me about 11-12mpg city

Hybrid Tundra that I test drove for a day gave me about 18-19mpg city, and about 19-20mpg highway

I have a 23 Platinum with 2300 miles now. City driving I'm getting 16.5 miles to the gallon and highway I'm getting about 17.5. I'm light on the gas pedal too. I see people posting here getting 20 miles and I'm like, "wtf?". I too hope my truck breaks in and starts getting better mileage.

way to many variables to do a apples to apples comparison on mpg. i can see this in real time. outside of ND, my mpg is 3 mpg higher. once i get into ND my mpg drops. its a combo of winds, hills, speed limits and traffic compared to the rest of the country when i drove from ND to GA in early september.

    ND is 75 mph
    SD is 80 mph
rest of my trip was 65-70

15-ish mpg lifetime. 1,500 miles into ‘24 Limited, iForce, 5.5’ bed, with tonneau, all else stock. Mixed between Eco/Normal - testing things out. I live in mountain town north of Phoenix where nothing is flat. Nearly all town/neighborhood driving. I know my high elevation (5,500 ft) doesn’t affect the mpg because of the closed turbo system vs my natural aspirated 2007 4Runner.

Took a trip with 2500 lb RV, bed loaded, family of 4, and bikes to Zion/Bryce. Towed like a dream. I got 15ish mpg on that trip. And also great because of the turbos, don’t loose power or mpgs at high elevation (8000’ in Bryce). Happy with that.

Just waiting and seeing. Didn’t buy it for mileage. Trying to not obsess about it and just enjoy the vehicle. I often drive with the mpg thing off.

2023 1794 (stock, not hybrid). Truck has about 6k miles. 4k mile trip averaged 18.7 on the comp. Easily gets 21-22 when in that 60-70 mph range. Not a light pedaled driver either. Strong head winds seems more noticeable in this truck vs the gen 2. Between the bigger gas tank and better mpgs I'm not complaining at all coming from the 2014 tundra that averaged around 14.2 mpgs

16 in mixed driving but only 500 miles on truck. Cruise control at 5 over on highways when traffic permits. All in 2H - no 4X4 yet. Empty bed with soft tonneau cover.
Using mainly Costco 87 ($2.87 yesterday) with one stop at a Marathon (87). Never go below 1/2 tank as a general rule.

i have noticed the last 1.5 tanks that if i set it to sport or higher mode, i get about 1-2 mpg better than normal or below mode.

only thing i can think of is that the turbo doesnt kick in as soon in sport mode from what i can tell on the gauge cluster. it uses the engine more before kicking in.

I dont know much about turbo engines, but I had the exact same results. My thought was that the truck got up to speed quicker, since it seems to really suck down fuel under load

24 Limited with 823 miles here. I just filled up for the 2nd time. Last tank got 16.1 MPG. 170 of the 323 miles was highway at 80mph. The rest of it was mainly 35 - 45mph side and main streets stop and go.

I did reset the fuel gauge before leaving the dealership with 30 miles on the truck and all highway back home for 35 miles averaging 22.7 MPG. I'm doing a 500 mile round trip coming up in 2 days and I just got a tonneau cover on and hoping for some improvement and excited to see what it gets.

    Lots of stuff!
I think the sport mode must get the turbo's to spool sooner making it more efficient. Not sure why you would want to use ECO? Sort of sounds like it missed the mark.

I have used my truck for mostly towing so I use tow mode or normal mode when not towing, I will try sport mode as it seems to be better for mileage.

I guess it's due to the fact that my truck spends more time towing the boat than driving unloaded, but if I don't use eco mode when I'm not towing, the truck acts like I'm trying to race everything. The throttle is ridiculously sensitive and shifts aggressively. If I put it in eco, it drives like it used to on normal. I'd hate to see how sport mode would react.

2023 TRD Pro with about 15k mi on it now.

New with stock tires my wife would get 20-20.5 mpg on her 140 mi commute which included about 80 mi of interstate at 75-80 mph. I would get 18-19 mpg on my commute which is an easy 20 mi round trip on rural roads.

Just towed an 8k (loaded with two adventure bikes, gear, etc) lbs 22ft Toy Hauler trailer 4500 miles from SC to CO and UT and saw as low as 8mpg across Kansas to about 10 mpg on back roads with 9 mpg being the average. We planned to take his F-250 diesel which got about the same 9-10 mpg on the same trip a few months back, but it had a high pressure fuel pump failure on day one and we had to come back home and get the Tundra. She was slightly pressing payload capacity but weight equalizing hitch minimized squat and it really pulled the load like a champ, cruising at slightly over 2k rpm most of the trip and ZERO issues towing. To balance the 3rd gen hate, I towed a 4000 lb 7x14' enclosed with my old 5.7 Tundra and it struggled more than the 3rd gen did with the 8k lbs, 22ft off road toy hauler which is taller and much more aero drag. The 3rd gen tows amazingly with tons of low end torque but still pretty average gas mileage towing at highway speeds. Weight of trailer isn't estimated, we payed to run it across the scales at the end of the trip since my buddy was so impressed with how it towed vs. his F-250 diesel.

Just put Nitto Recon Grappler in 295/70-18 in SL instead of "E" ply which is 52 lbs ea instead of well over 60 lbs for most E ply tires. Its a 34.3" tire so expecting a hit in MPG and seeing about 17 mpg on the dash in my commute vs 18-19 so far but need to hand calculate to correct for tire size difference. Speedo reads about 2 mph low at 60 mph (~5% difference in size), so real MPG is likely even lower when hand calculating. About to take her 1500 mi to Key West and back so that will be a good MPG test.

Appreciate the write up on the towing. I have a Lamar 7x14 dump trailer that weighs 4,500lbs empty. I will be loading logs, dirt, gravel etc over time and I was curious as to how it would handle with close to 10k in the trailer.

My only concern is the stock Bridgestone Dueller tires. I would need to check if they can handle the weight. But if Toyota says you can haul 11k with the truck and they put tires on there from the factory, in theory the tires should be properly sizes vs having to get "E" rated.
