Wow, too bad you don't still have it (I assume?)

Was he still shaping under the G&S label or his own logo?

He's still shaping but much less, unless you're a return customer most people can't even get a board from him.

My shaper (Bob Mitsven) is in the same little complex as Skip, Hank Warner, and another long time genius whose name escapes me. They all talk story and share templates back and forth, quite the hive collective of craftsmanship.

I can have my guy get me a board (and mark it up of course) from Skip, and I've thought about it just to have one in the quiver, but they're freaking SPENDY. Still might do it.

    YES! You're welcome.
So a cool little thing I started doing when I get a board shaped is I have a couple of "touchstones" glassed into the deck. I do the boards to honor someone I love, I've done one for Mom, Dad, my wife, and best friend.
I'm a long time sober, so I glass in the appropriate year sobriety token, and then some sort of memento of the person it's honoring. The one for my Mom has a carved stone pendant that she used to wear, for example.

The items are placed so that when I'm laying on the board to paddle, the sobriety token is up by my head (to keep it on straight) and the person's memento is near my heart. It's pretty cool, I'll sit out in the water with my hand on the touchstone and talk to Dad, or maybe I'm anxious if it's big, or pissed at the guy who dropped in, and the sun will glint off the token and hit my eye... snaps me right back to center.

I think my shaper hates it 'cuz it makes his life more difficult, but he kinda' digs it too. He told me once "Don't go telling everybody this is a thing!"

Still Mtn. bike, but decided that rippin' around Glamis Dunes on a 3-wheeler in my Mid-50's was probably pushing my luck. I do miss it.

    Oops.jpg

    Atta' boy!!
Same, I got myself a Carveboard... trying to be somewhat smart where concrete is involved.

My next door neighbor is probably 50-something and goes to the skatepark by us every weekend... I get tempted sometimes, but nah.

I've toyed with the thought of taking up kite surfing, but really don't need another addiction. Plus the learning curve looks like it'd be pretty steep.

The only snow kite skiing I've seen is videos of absolutely CRAZY people half skiing/half flying down some gnarly shit, like ski run... then off a cliff, then back to earth.

Is there like "Normal" ways to do it? That sounds very cool.

I only snow kite on the frozen lakes here in Minnesota so its not too crazy. I thought the learning curve was pretty easy. Just need to take a lesson or two on kite control and you're off and running. I've never wind surfed but people that have, tell me it's easier to learn how to kite.

My Tundra is used for work. Road construction company. The truck only gets dirty and never carry anything. Ive carried more for personal which if I had a Camry I could just haul a small trailer for any loads. Who needs a truck. Just need a small trailer. Wink wink

Unfortunately I sold it when I moved out of SD and back to CO. Pretty sure he was on his own back then. Only marking in the board was his sig. But I honestly don't even know. Now I just surf rivers in kayaks, which believe it or not, is much easier than surfing in an ocean.

also couldn't agree more that not moving is for the meek. Still ride mtn bikes, whitewater kayak, snowboard, and row and paddle rafts down rivers. Adrenaline fuels my existence. Got another Grand Canyon trip this fall.

    That's heavy!

Wifey and I did a rafting trip some years ago, and it's an awesome rush. I can imagine it's even more intense in a little 'yak. I will say this.

Come July I will have been surfing for 50 years...

The ocean is heavy and there's a lot of water moving, but most of the time I know what that water's gonna' do to me and how it behaves. I know how it feels when a wave holds you down, I usually know how long it's gonna' last, and I've survived enough wipeouts to know that if I just relax... go limp and let it do it's thing, pretty soon it'll let go of me and pass on by.
Compared to younger days I don't surf anything of consequence anymore so it's no big whoop.

I don't have enough time on the river in THAT kind of whitewater to have that same level of comfort so it's kind of an unknown. I can KINDA' read it, but not like I can the ocean, and certainly not like the guides and poeple like you can.
A wave makes a bunch whitewater and then it's gone.
River water just keeps coming, all day long.

    Pretty fun though!

That's Margo and I in the front.

Rivers and oceans are similar in a lot of ways. They allow us to entertain the idea that we are conquering them. But in reality we know we didn't do anything but survive their mighty power. Abbey said it best

That doesn't sound right... is that possible?

I've thought about getting a dual sport, or maybe a dirt bike, but I think it'd be better if my next toy has more protection than that.

"With age comes a cage" as they say.

We occasionally rent SXS's when traveling to good spots.

Fast Can-Am turbo in Sedona, slow Kawasaki crawler in Moab.

Not sure which I enjoyed more. The rock crawling was pretty amazing.

Wifey did great on the slick rock!

The turbo Can Am was QUICK! They had a 55 mph nanny on it (I verified) to save people from themselves but it was quick outta' the hole.

If they didn't have a governor on it these will do 90 right off the showroom floor.

Yup. I had regular cab, eight foot bed trux for 32 years. But then I decided I wanted a Toyota. If times had been different, I would have ordered an eight foot bed Toyota.
I still would have been stuck with a back seat that I don't need or want, but at least I would have had the eight foot bed. It was the Fall of 2022. My stupid 2017 Ford F-350
developed a steering wheel vibration at only 23,*** miles. Long story short, the dealer where I bought it jerked me around, I put new tires on. Dealer number two fixed it under my platinum extended warranty, after two attempts. At the time, there were over 40k Super Dutys sitting on a racetrack in Kentucky waiting on chips. New Tundras were scarce also.
A 2023 SR5 double Cab six and half foot bed with the TRD Off Road package showed up at my dealer the same day I brought my ford in for appraisal. Which was also the same day I got it back from dealer number two. They gave me what I paid for the truck five years previous, I was just out the cost of the plow and other accessories. I considered a new Tundra in 2017, but I had owned " 3/4 Ton" 4x4's since 1987. Never daily drivers. I wish I had gotten a new 2017 Tundra, but I am very happy with my 2023. I currently have 26,000 miles with no issues, and allegedly I will be receiving a new motor with turbos and all this summer. So likely 30k+ "Free" miles on the first motor. My preference would still be a regular cab with an eight foot bed, but that's the sacrifice I have to make to get a Toyota. The market rules. Most guys want/need a darn school bus. I have had two bow ties, and a blue oval, I am not getting either of those, and mopar has never interested me.So Tundra it is. I am getting by very well with my 6.5 foot bed half ton. It's the first time that my pickup is a daily driver. 20 mpg is not bad. I decided to go with a fiberglass cap this time around. so anything that doesn't easily fit goes on one of the five trailers that I register.

I actually thought that. I would love to have a Toyota Sequoia my dogs would have more room. Right now I built a two-piece plywood platform with carpeting to match the floor carpeting. Each piece is the same width as the seats in the rear. So I can remove the platform in front of the single seat if I need to take a rear passenger and still have room for both dogs. The only problem is, unlike 2003 and earlier Ford SuperCrew pickups or some current models, Toyota doesn't give much room for dogs. The platform I built rests on top of the integrated tool chest below the rear seats and I built boxed supports to cover the void where the feet go, and the platforms rest on that. That said, as much as I miss having an SUV for the dogs to run around in the back of it, I was able to use my pickup truck recently for hauling a half dozen loads to charity after cleaning out my house. Besides I like the regular look of the truck and I can buy a camper shell truck bed tent which will give us more room. I kind of like the combination of the Crewmax size and having a truck bed even if it's only 5 1/2 ft

pre-22 Double cabs are GREAT Trucks

The New Gen 22 -25 are another MAJOR FAIL by Toyota

pre-22 DblCabs have more room and are very functional especially with the 8 foot bed.

Because a real work truck has an 8 foot bed
I'm in a '21 and that is the only way you could get an 8 foot bed

Double cab backseat isn't for large people but it is actually pretty comfy to sit in for a couple hours or so.

NISSAN is missing out on a golden opportunity right now.
They could be replacing the pre-22 Tundras by upgrading their design with a 8 foot bed.

No one makes a full four door DblCab with 8ft Bed in a half/ton anymore. The New Gen Tundra DblCab is virtually useless.

I drove a 22 taco, and thought it was a nice little truck.

    I drove a 23 4runner, and i felt the same.

I hopped in my 14 crewmax, and i was in love, and knew i could tow my other shitboxes around, if need be.

I dont need a longbed. I have 2 trailers, one 4x8, and a 5x8 dumper, if i am carrying big stuff.

    True
8 foot bed is a must for some people, so options are immediately reduced if looking for a truck. Very hard to find Toyota 8 foot beds up here on version 2.5, nobody sells em.

I think the double cabs look better, but I get more utility out of my crewmax.

    • Lots of climate controlled storage
    • Family of 5 plus a 60-lb dog on the rear floor? No problem
    • Dead deer don’t go in an SUV
    • I still get 12’ boards in my baby bed with the tailgate down
    • ATV fits with tailgate down
    • All 5 of our bikes fit with tailgate up
    • 3 kayaks with tailgate up and ratchet straps

I have young kids, I’m not a drywaller, and I don’t frame houses. Crewmax makes more sense for me.

You have GREATER chances in seeing a Sasquatch then finding a low mileage, one owner, pre-22 Tundra DblCab 8ft 4WD TRD for sale.

It is a versatility preference application as you stated.

You either need the Crew Cab space or you need the 8ft Bed space where the DblCab space is sufficient.

Personally, i could not use the CrewCab with the 5.5 Bed but i could make due with a CrewCab with a 6.5 Bed.
Of course Toyota did not make a CC with a 6.5 Bed until this new failed Gen.

I just purchased a 2022 RAM 1500 CC with the 6.5 Bed and love it.

CrewCab with a 8ft Bed is just too looooong of a wheelbase for NJ driving.

With that said, i would rather have my TRD DblCab 8ft Bed back.
