You’re missing that in the real world 10ga = 1/8. But have your couple ten thousandths if it makes you feel better. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Aluminum is lighter and more expensive. Steel..a bit cheaper, Stainless?? Damn good, not cheap either...but for skid plates??? A matter of choice.

The rest of the real world does not use inch...you can be sarcastic but the real world uses metric. You need to catch up. Go try to order 1/8" for an international contract...Huh??All of our customers that have any domestic/international aerospace contracts...all vacuum gauges are in Torr, torque in Pascals, length in microns>>>>0.0000394".....hundred thousandths by the way.....if it makes you feel better...sheesh....I guess RCI should go out of business and all of us who bought skids from them should return them???? Yawn... Sorry OP....I guess Bud Built or nothing............life goes on....and simple conversions from metric to inch but you took it way beyond my earlier posts with @Sas before you chimed in. Thanks...

Ive got a fancy engineering degree from a “good school” too. I prefer to use the launguage my customers speak. If yours speak in Torr I would expect you to as well. But in the aftermarket automotive accessory world that’s not what we use.

Call it whatever you want but IMO 10gauge is too thin to be a reliable performer on a full size truck if you’re beating it up off road.

It’s anyone wants a full set of tundra skids in 7 gauge, 4.55mm, roughly 3/16” per the chart above or 4762.5microns. +\- whatever tolerance the steel mill put on that day, I have a set in stock ready to ship.

He wasn’t being sarcastic. Different skids for different needs. I get the one close to you is best, but maybe it isn’t...

First of all I never said RCI was the best. Don't put words in my mouth..and "go try to order 9/64" steel and some 1/8" steel" is not sarcastic???? I simply gave an option to the OP for skids and mistakenly claimed RCI used 3/16". @Sas corrected me that it was 10 gauge which is in true mathematical conversion terms>>>>>9/64" All of a sudden mac11 takes it to a new ridiculous level...Give me a freaking break. By the way I'm not trying to sell some skids. I've got no skin in this game.

I need to get a new front skid. Probably RCI unless I find something like this:

Might have to steal it off the chaos truck when I'm in socal next month

You are really pissed off over 1/64” that may or may not even be there because of plate roll tolerance.

I run the steel RCI. Works fine for my needs. Was a fair price, much better than stock and most of all available right away from toytec.

I've waited about 2 weeks so far for an RCI skid plate I ordered through toytec, so they aren't immediately available.

My RCI’s are a little bent but holding up pretty well. But I doubt very many Tundra owners drop their trucks on as many boulders as I do. Aluminum would’ve been shredded already.
    0E9E8A67-0669-45A1-8217-4608EE709E60.jpg
I definitely recommend the RCI’s for 99% of the Tundra owners out there. Only one I would not recommend is their 38 gallon tank skid as the bolt heads are completely exposed.

Anyone have a clue what gauge/thickness the P&P Skids are?

    RCI - .140 in
    BudBuilt - .187 in
    P&P - ???

Got an answer from P&P... Here is a full rundown of the main options we have for skid plates:

RCI - .140 in Full Set (Black PC) $850
    BudBuilt - .187 in (3/16) Full Set (bare) $1050
    P&P - .187 (3/16) - Full Set (bare) $1025

Good info, That’s a big price difference, and powder coating isn’t cheap either.

Actually, it got me thinking that I may go P&P or BudBuilt instead of RCI. Dont really care about the powdercoat since they will just be getting all scratched up anyway (and Im in SoCal where it never rains). The 3/16in (6 gauge) just seems a lot beefier than the 10 gauge. 6g is 33% thicker than 10g.

I dont think that either one is BETTER than the other. Just depends on what you want out of your skids.

I love the BudBuilt, but I worry that some of the mounting points on the frame will conflict with my slider mounting points.

    Here’s a couple of thoughts:
Aluminum skids have been absorbing hits for years on jeeps and trucks
    56CCED84-DD60-4CF0-AEE1-ACA1B22EE90A.jpg
They don’t rust and weigh less. I will pick aluminum over steel every day of the week.
Also, the TRD Pro engine skid has dimples that provide protection for the bolt heads. This is not the case on the RCI engine skid, and appears to be the only difference.
I’m using the RCI transfer and transmission skid. They are well made.

For sure... I would hit them with some self etching primer, then a bit of spray paint.
Has anyone ever tried bedliner on skids? Or would bedliner keep them from "Skidding"?

Interesting topic. I already have a TRD Pro aluminum front skid that saved the front end after taking a good hit from a thick wooden block a semi spit out towards me at highway speed. I’m guessing it probably wouldn’t hold up to Rubicon-style boulder-bashing trail riding, though, but I don’t intend to do any hardcore rock crawling.

Anyway, I’m still considering adding more protection underneath and have learned a lot reading this thread. I also see that some wheelers have even used thick slabs of the plastic cutting board material when building their own:

    https://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/gen...ate-tech-questions.html#/topics/610452?page=6

I’m curious, what do most of the desert racers and prerunner chase trucks use for theirs?

Same here, and that's why I decided to go with TRD plate. 1/4" aluminum plate is plenty strong for city and highway driving and the occasional shopping mall trail. :)
