    WTF!?!??
Even the VW parts suck!! :p
    Lol

J/K - but that’s F’d up. Do the suppliers have decent ratings? I’ve been handed the wrong parts God knows how many times, but not used parts, that are clearly not useable.

I pulled the rubber cover off the tube and it has coolant in it even. So irritated with that supplier. ECS Tuning is pretty big, I never expected them to ship a part like this.

Just ordered another one from Pelican Parts, 3rd times a charm right? Should arrive Tuesday.

How's that even possible. I'd reach out to them and have them credit you; that's really poor inventory control on their part.

uh oh! Pelican is owned by ECS lol
Sounds like the ECS employees hate their jobs.

Completely agree, they must have accepted a return and not looked at it. It was still in the plastic bag in the box and I didnt notice until I picked up the bag and saw it was sliced open. I bet they just opened the box, saw the bag still had the seal tape and closed the box. Glad I always check out parts right when I get them and not when my car is apart.

They sent me a return label and it's just going back. They offered to send another on rush but I'm not messing around with that. I have one coming from another supplier Tuesday, can't install until Saturday anyhow.

That’s an interesting article on ECS. They went from a small mom-and-pop 20 years ago to a huge supplier current date (much like the business I co-own). We just had employee appreciation lunches at both of our locations yesterday. I was behind the food, serving our employees at our corporate facility.
ECS had cameras on every work desk - crazy!!

Good news! Got my new steering pump in today from Pelican, a few nice things I noticed.

The packaging is beautiful, no crinkles, no stains, no signs of being ripped apart and taped back up, it leads me to think they take care of their inventory. Both of the last pumps had boxes that were falling apart.
    20200310_172535.jpg

The part is beautiful, which says nothing really but compared to the last two I had in my hand this one looks nicer and feels better when I turn the pump. I know its Chinese but it allegedly has been through quality checks in Denmark. I'd bet they do more sample tests per batch rather than individual tests, but it is nice to know.

Alright, I admit, after the bs with Urotuning and ECS I felt like Pelican would f up somehow too. Was just looking at my bank activity and they charged me on 3/6 and somehow again on 3/10. Sonofabeesh!

Could be a bank error but it definitely deducted the cost twice.

    Up it went, bumper off

    Headlight off...

...and the delicate dance of intercooler removal began
    20200320_174437.jpg
    20200320_180555.jpg

Off it came along with the worst hose clamps I've ever seen, and I've seen so many. If anyone with a turbo VW wonders if a catch can is a good idea, I've got great news! Your intercooler is a catch can! It had about 3 oz of the darkest oil. The rest of my oil is still honey colored so that was interesting, this is the lowest point where it would collect.
    20200320_182722.jpg

Now some comparisons between stock and my new upgrade
    20200320_182333.jpg 20200320_182403.jpg 20200320_182346.jpg

It's about twice the volume and way more surface area. The aluminum end caps will transfer heat more efficiently than the plastic I think. In studies this goes toe to tow with front mounts, but loses less boost because it doesn't need extra piping.

It got dark out and I realized I need different bolts to attach my MAP sensor, so I will continue tomorrow.

I remember driving to ECS to pick up a part for my vw when they ran out of a garage. Then they did customer appointments/actually tested their products. Remember seeing a lambo getting bigger turbos put on it the day I went in. It was the owners according to a mechanic (I knew their business was going well at this point). Sad that's not the case anymore and they're a shipping clerk now, but I've always had good luck with them. My guess would be a one off fluke with that trash they sent. New IC looks real nice man. I'm enjoying your build.

New steering pump in, along with fresh fluid, a new sensor, and a new serpentine belt (much needed).
It turned out to be a smart move doing an intercooler upgrade at the same time, it gave me much more room to work while the intercooler is off. I also had to unbolt the SAI pump and swing it a bit to get the last bolt out of the pump. I was planning to replace the pressure line but I realized it is pretty impossible to do without either dropping the subframe or maybe pulling the inner tie rods. I'll leave that alone until I have a better reason to drop the subframe.
    20200321_151318.jpg

While it's in the air I dumped and refilled the trans with Amsoil. I don't know if it has ever been changed, I was expecting black stinky fluid but to my surprise it was the color of an amber beer. Maybe it had been changed at some point. I'm planning to change the fluid again next pull change in the spirit of PHM.

I haven't had a wrestling match like this since Honky Tonk Man and Ultimate warrior squared off and my brother an I got pumped up and I broke a guitar over his head. Run-on sentences aside, it's in.

Now the bad news, my skid plate won't fit
This behemoth interferes just enough with the bracket for my skidplate. Since I've lifted my car considerably I'll roll without one for now and maybe fab one up in the future with a more narrow mount.

Other not so bad news, my suspicion was correct that I can easily swap the silicone upper hose in without taking the intercooler out. The problem is its waaaaay too long, it folds over twice when installed. I took a pic and I'm gonna ask Forge what they think before I go cutting it up, but I'm sure if I cut a few inches off the bottom end it will fit perfectly. I would love to run that hose but I'll wait to hear from Forge.
    20200321_185818.jpg

Now its beer time, I'm gonna wind down by swapping some headlight bulbs and I'll put the car back together tomorrow morning for a test run.

Double checked all my work this morning, got the bumper and front tires back on and set it on the ground. Just did a test run on a closed designated test running course. I did four pulls from 2nd through 4th holding 18psi the whole way, no problem. Got home and touched the intercooler, feels cool to the touch.

Steering feels good, I'm going to keep doing the baster remove and fill method for a few weeks until my other quart is empty. The biggest surprise is the trans, shifting in this car always has been so notchy, it's hard to go from gear to gear, almost like a car without synchros. Now it shifts like butter! Shifter feels as smooth as my wifes Honda which I've always been jealous of.

Super happy to have it back together again, now I'm gonna drive it to Costco as a real test.

I replaced my wife's GTI gearbox fluid at 90k for the first time. I thought the shifting felt fine until I replaced it. Like you said, feels much smoother. Weirdly enough, I think the spec said it never needs to be replaced.

Enjoying this thread, I wish my wife wanted hers modded.

I haven't drove my car much since mid March when I started working from home. This morning my internet router failed so o had to drive over to Spectrum to trade it in. I admit I was a little excited to do a freeway run in the cool 55 degree air.

I warmed up on my way to the freeway and let it rip getting on the freeway ramp. When I got off the freeway I kept hearing odd sounds and feeling bouncy.

We all enjoy when a car "puts you back in your seat" but how many have been put THROUGH your seat?

    20200413_103704.jpg

Stitching gave out completely in the lumbar area. Now I have no support really and lots of funny noises. Gonna look into a replacement skin or maybe upgrade to some VW recaro if I can find reasonably priced ones. Just hesitant to do so because these have airbags in the side, so a reskin seems smarter.

This thread has inspired me to give the Audi some much needed TLC. The seats in mine are starting to take a toll as well but not sure I want to get the Recaro’s from an older S4.

@vhstejskal hell yeah that's NOICE! I get jealous of the Audi motors being situated that way, looks so much better. I'm curious if they get more power from that massive intake manifold.

Yeah the fact that it's positioned that way make it really nice to work on. I can have the full front end off in less than 30 minutes. Going to need to do that for a clutch replacement. Funny you mention the intake; I only have a spacer on it it's the factory one just powder coated but I'm sure that add a few horses. :D

Looking at the design differences yours looks better balanced having the inlet centered vs mine being at one side. Then those primary tubes, they're at least three times longer than mine. Looks really good in that subtle color, did you smooth it down before coating it? If I find a good reason to pull mine I'll paint both parts black... maybe.

Thanks man... Other than blasting it for prep what made is really smooth was a primer coat; which helps prevent out gassing so you don’t get bubble in the final color or clear coat. You can still at close see the casting seams but its clean.

Black would look really nice; would really make the engine pop out.

Spent about 3 hours this morning going over the paint. Washed, rubbed it down with a synthetic clay pad, then waxed with an orbital buffer. This paint is full of damage but I wanted to test my buffer on this before I use it on my truck. Came out smooth and has a lot of reflections now.

I'll do a more detailed cleanup sometime soon, I need to do a deep clean on the wheels and spend some time on the lower bumpers and grille inserts. For now I'm pretty happy.

Later tonight I'm going to replace the side markers. The one on this fender lost the lens and the amber ones never worked. I picked up a set of clean ones. At some point I need to pop off the mirror housings and repaint them, maybe I'll go black. The roof also needs a repaint so potentially I can paint that black and it will come together.

Just ordered up a new timing belt kit, a few radiator hose clamps to replace the worm gear clamps that my car has had for years(living dangerous), a lower radiator hose quick connect fitting because mine has a leak, and a set of sweet Vibratechnics motor mounts. These mounts use rubber insulators rather than polyurethane like most companies do, yet they say they reduce engine movement considerably.

I looked around my garage, I still have an aluminum thermostat housing to install(with new thermostat), an aluminum crack pipe(VW guys know about that), a clutch slave cylinder with braided line, and a pair of parking brake cables all waiting to be installed. Also have oil, a filter, and 1.5 gallons of VW coolant.

I'm thinking I'll do the timing belt, radiator stuff, mounts on a Saturday and do the rest on a Sunday. That will get me to a "no more maintenance for a while" state. It's due for a smog check in August, then it will be time for a 3" downpipe and very likely a Eurodyne tuning kit. I've been reading a lot about that kit, it is one of the only options where I can run stage 2 on 91 octane and I can reflash to a different tune any time if I switch turbos or something like that. Their stage 2 claims 230hp and 260tq, I have seen dyno results of it hitting those numbers at the wheels which is super impressive. More to come on that in coming months.

These things are seriously nice! New performance motor mounts, they're billet and have a giant rubber bushing so that they don't vibrate to hell like poly and they aren't full of holes like stock. They do allow some play side to side but they seem stiffer than stock and only offer play in one plane of direction it that makes sense. Unfortunately theyll be riding the shelf until I get time to do my timing belt/water pump job. That job requires removing the passenger side mount anyway.

I will also have another car that my wife may or may not hate to write about soon... its definitely getting some work before I do this timing belt.
