At what MPG on the new Tundra would it make sense to move on to the 3rd gen?

I am watching the YouTube videos and it seems like 24-25 mpg combined is the spot. I'm currently managing 15 combined being conscious of driving.

Maybe someone here has contemplated the same?

You make it sound like that's the only factor.

For me it is many things:
Reliability, Cost, Reliability, Function, Reliability but I am sure mpgs are in there somewhere.

Lets say it is for this example.

I do agree with you on the other points.

I haven't even tossed into the example that they are offering me more for my truck than I paid for it yet.

No amount of mpg’s will get me to buy one of these ugly ass abominations. If I buy one it will be because I have completely lost my fucking mind.

More mpg would be nice, don't get me wrong, but that's literally the least important data point for me when buying a truck (or frankly any vehicle).

Agreed, that would depend on how much and can I actually buy a new truck?

First in for most, not gonna pay 60+k for a truck. I use my truck for work, not getting grocery so I don’t know what kind of mpg, I’m getting once I put all my tools in the bed.

Amen. Daily haul of tools and gear is a few hundred so all of this mpg is just academic. Not to mention my stout self...lol. Agreed that if we start off with better fuel economy then after all gear we should still have more, but too many other factors like the tonneau cover/cap, the suspension lowering due to load, etc to make it mean anything in real life. I just want reliability

Depends on the price. We still don't have an MSRP. I would need to make the money back within 5 years which is nearly impossible on gas mileage difference alone. Same for the Hybrid but it would also have to save me enough to replace the battery twice.

Since we don't know the prices of any of this, it's really a moot point.

Personally to trade a perfectly good paid off Tundra (minus of course the GUARANTEED ticking time bomb self destructing transmission :p) to get better gas mileage makes zero sense. Unless of course Toyota fits the gas bill on the 3rd Gen for the entire time I own it…

The problem with turbo is you have to cools down the turbo before shutting off the engine, if not the bearing not gonna last, but with the hybrid system I can’t even put a turbo timer in cause it will go to EV mode once I stop…

    1. heated steering wheel
    2. wireless AA/Carplay
    3. better placement of center console screen (sunglare)
    4. better JBL than 2.5 gen (technically anything would be an improvement bass wise)
    5. mpg improvement over current platinum of around 4-5 mpg (we currently get 11mpg city / 15mpg highway)
    6. storage space (not a biggie if mpg improves a lot with hybrid, since we dont have any now in the platinum)
    7. dam chrome around the cupholders (the sun bounce is bad at times)
    8. bigger center console screen
    9. for those times the wife goes out with the ladies or the kids are in town, rear heated seats (vented seats are a bonus)
    10. qi charging

mpg is the last thing we want in the grand scheme of things technically. everything after #5 is just nice to have.

    Nada yet.
This is no longer relevant. The turbos are water cooled and not oil cooled like older turbos so no need to cool them to prevent oil coking on the bearings.

I'll only consider one if I buy a travel trailer that exceeds my payload (or another factor that I won't mention here to avoid a tangent) but at that point I'd probably at least look at 3500s, too.

a facelift, then a 5.0 v8 with 30 plug in-miles electric (dont tow, only need it for ~350 lbs payload)

I would rather (mid 80’s) mike tyson use my sack as a speed bag, than have anything to do with another front engine toyota.

i cant explain it, but i’ve got a soft spot for first gen mr2’s

If they hybrid the V8 with a 10 speed, I think it will get the TTV6 numbers

If the Hybrid can average around 25+ on the Highway, I’d be inclined to jump for the range I can get on long trips. I take quite a few 300-1,200 mile trips, so that matters to me. But, there would have to be a fix for that ugly front end. I simply hate all of the new Toyota’s/Lexus with that grill that goes down to the ground. Then I’d have to factor in the mileage hit I’d get from the lift I’d need for ground clearance, taller tires, and probably better skid plates.

I plan to wait and watch how it goes, and I’ll consider the Hybrid after the facts come out and they have about 4 years on the road. The numbers on the conventional TTV6, while good, are not enough to get me to move at this time. $5-6 gas, and that would change.

Oof, I guess I’m 22 years behind on the turbo technology…lol
I never like the turbo, it’s kinda more expensive to maintain

well not much you can do with that front end when you are trying to supply 3 difference radiators with air to cool stuff and not to mention the 2 side radiators for the intercoolers.

Toyota literally says in the owner's manual you have to idle for a minute after hard driving before shutting off the truck to cool down the turbo.

I figured I was in on a new gen if the highway mileage was over 20. I just can’t stomach the 2nd gen poor mileage. I’m happy with the numbers posted. Hell twice the capabilities and power as my Tacoma and still better mileage? Awesome
