Seriously - if an employer is asking for 3 references non co/worker and non relative - I’d seriously consider if I wanted to work for such an outdated company.

Recently was approached by an employer for sounded to be a good job - talked and had mutual interest in moving forward - until they sent me an application to fill out asking for this crap.

I told the recruiter simply I don’t ask my friends to be references out of respect for their privacy and time - you want former employers/supervisors - fine…that part of the deal - but friends - NO…their my freaking friends not business references.

She said basically - just list them - we never call.

I thanked her a day later and said I was moving forward with other candidates for my employment.

A place with a hard copy application is outdated for most jobs - but this question is just plain wrong in today’s employment landscape. I can find all I want to know about you using Google and social media to make a hiring decision - no need to bother 3 friends to confirm they are your friends. Odds of 1/3 ever picking up or returning my call is virtually nil anyway - so why waste my time asking for their numbers and pissing people off with the question.

 

I don't have social media. You wouldn't find me or my friends. But I agree with friends as references.

I'm in that group too, no social media, very few friends, and haven't filled out a job app in over 25 years.

 

Your on tundras.com aren’t you ? Forums are social too - just not the network we think of when someone says “social media”.

I don’t do FB for example - but there is so much more you can find on people online or about them these days with a few tools it’s scary.

I guess I’m lucky I have nothing to hide from anyone - or all that interesting. Still amazes me how stupid some people who do have things they should be hiding are at times and how ignorant they are in who they “friend”.

 

It’s annoying when you’re in a meeting and people keep looking at their apple watch because their messages going through or their social media notifications.

Absolutely the most disrespectful thing - looking at watch/phone/whatever

Basically saying “someone more important/interesting may be trying to reach me”.

Its funny though - ask people what age group is worst and your going to hear “young adults” my experience- it’s 50+ age group by far who are the worst offenders - sense of self importance and just lack of manners.

Overall - I find the lack of manners amongst adults over 40 maddening too. Complain about “kids” but the older they get - the worse they are.

Went to a show last night with a crowd that was 90% 60+…should have seen the parking lot getting out and all the geezers in their Buicks and Lincoln’s - absolutely no regard for anyone but themselves trying to get where they wanted to go - blindly reversing into aisles with cars coming at them and cutting people off to get to the exits faster….I guess 9:42 is a tad past their regular bed times.

 

Forums like this and reddit have anonymity. There is no way to know who I am on there/here unless they are real detectives. Most people are just going to take your name and google it. I've googled my name. It takes about 5-10 pages to find anything. They are not going to go through the trouble. And even if they did, they won't find anything but quotes from a baseball game that I coached. There are others out there with my name that will come up before you'll find me.

Forums and Reddit have a DEGREE of anonymity - yes, it’s not as simple as googling a name and looking at results. At the same time - if they want to link you - they can.

Ever wonder how they find out the names of these hackers and connect them to their activity ? Trust me - these people are doing more to hide identities than using a user id.

Cookies are the most innocent sounding name to a highly invasive tool into your privacy. Saw it first hand working briefly in an online sales job a few years ago - access to your browsing session both on and off the vendor site and potentially history.

Like I said - I’ve got nothing of interest to hide and most employers don’t really care - it’s a bit like drug testing - they only care that your not a complete idiot and not going to be a liability if they hire you - no that you smoked a joint in college. At the same time - anonymity and the internet will never exist - it’s just who has access to your info and how easy is it to obtain that worries me. Despite all the recent focus on privacy - for the most part it’s went the opposite way. Doesn’t bother me when some agency with letters for a name can track me down as much as it does as some group of for profit companies doing it to exploit profit margins and create an unfair playing field for business - building a monopoly eventually.

 

When I was looking for work last year, I got my professional references all lined up and then no one even asked for them.
