Just bought and scheduled to pick up a 29’ Grand Design Imagine this coming Friday. I went ahead and got the back up camera on the back of the camper with a 5” video display inside the truck. Looking to see if there are any recommendations here in mounts for this video display. I did do a search without any luck so seeing if any of my tundra brothers/sisters may have some recommendations. Thanks!

I've got a 2800BH (32' total length) and a 5" display. I found it's most practical and natural for me to mount it upper right on the windshield with suction mount, immediately next to the rear view mirror. This puts your eyes in the natural rear view mirror location with a natural favor towards your blind/far mirror.

Note: you'll want to coordinate with your co-pilot so you trust one another through the one-way audio. You'll see and hear them and might adjust appropriately, and you both need to teust that the comms are working. If not, get out and talk, or have two-way walkies. In my situation, she trusts me to drive and put the eailer where she says. I trust she says what she means and means what she says.

    Cheers and congrats!

Excellent suggestion(s)! Thanks, I knew I would get the straight skinny here. Looks like I have additional shopping to do. Much appreciated.

Hey Mike, we ended up getting the 2610 ML. We did have a Forest River flagstaff 26FKBS but got jerked around for 4 months. A lot of empty promises with delayed builds going out till July. Pulled my down payment and went back to shopping but this time we bought right off the lot. Good thing because the tongue weight was very close to max and this 2610 ML is a little more manageable. Did yours not come with the suction mount? I do something similar to @bflooks with my Furion.

Thought about that after I posted my comment. Will know come Friday when I pick it up. Your suggestion though about mounting it to the right of the rear view mirror makes sense. I do see my wife and I practicing our communication skills while parking at the local school afterwards. Thanks again, shouldn’t be too bad. Had some experience in the military with driving a 5 ton pulling a water Buffalo. Will see how much I remember.

I use mine more for monitoring what's behind me when towing than for backing. My wife's job is mainly to yell stop before I hit anything. I always remember GOAL (get out and look) and don't get in a hurry when backing.

Backing is another great use for that roll down rear window. :bananadance:

It really helps to hear your spotter without getting on the phone or walkie talkies.

I got some velcro strips (probably from Amazon) and put one side on the bottom of the display and the other on the "rubber/plastic thing" that sits in the middle of the dash of my 2016.

I never gave the suction attachments a try, in my previous experiences with anything suction to the windshield it never seems to stay, but maybe you'll have better luck.

The downside to my set-up is you always see half of the velcro but maybe you can put it under the "rubber/plastic" thing and just remove that thing when you want to use the camera. Always seeing it there doesn't bother me, but it may bother some people. It takes a couple of seconds to set-up and plug it when needed and I store the display in the center console.

    Hope this helps.

Key to the suction mount is to give a solid cleaning to the windshield with IPA before mounting it. My 5" Furion has been in place almost a year now without issue.

Yeah, I am sure that I didn't clean the area well before attempting and I have since adopted the theory that all suction mount things don't work!!!

It was this and the grand design forums that helped me see the light. Sure enough, they were right. Who knew window cleaner wasnt good enough at cleaning windows for suction mounts?

I've thought about that as well. First I'm going to try cutting some polycarbonate plastic to size and try sticking it to that in that space, since I already have some in the garage.

Ok we are on a roll, thanks for all the great advice for mounting the backup camera. Next question, any recommendations for surge protectors? Camper is able to be plugged into 30 or 50 amp.

I can’t help you there... mines only 30A and I don’t have any special surge protector.

We have a Progressive Industries. Expensive but well warrantied and highly praised. That said, my brother uses a Camco. Neither of us have had a problem to date. We chose the post side, not the hard mount, simply for flexibility in use cases.

I have a Progressive Industries one also, 50A version and seems to work fine. Bought it based on the reviews. I think it over $300 but it’s important to have a good surge protector.

If you can't open your tailgate with the trailer hooked up you can rotate the head of the jack 90° and it will clear. There are two rubber plugs on the sides of the jack. Under the plugs are two bolts. Remove the bolts and turn the head 90° and reinstall. I have the same jack.

Good to know. Here she is, all 29’ 11” of her. Took it back to the school parking lot and practiced. Drove over to the storage area and backed it in beside a very very nice motor home. Took my time, made small adjustments and parked it....without an incident. Can’t wait till Friday! Going camping for the first time. 3501B6ED-7960-4F13-A7B9-066ED783114C.jpg

Do you have any plans to run through a CAT scale? I have some friends looking at a similar size.
