The metal soffit & ceiling are coming along very nicely for my barn project. I had my electricians run all the electrical runs and boxes for the ceiling before we installed the metal ceilings. This will make for a very clean and finished look when it’s all done. 052CF812-50A7-46DC-A5D5-AC2583373D86.jpg

I'm working on initial budgeting / planning to build a shop next year. Our previous home had a 30 × 50 shop and that was the one major downside to moving into our existing home. We have been here about 3 years and not having the extra space is driving me nuts. I had to sell nearly all my toys prior to the move. It was nice for a while but now I'm ready to expand and collect some more stuff. ;)

I've seen that many of you have nice shops. Are there any things you would do differently / change. I want to make sure I've covered all my bases. Also pros / cons to steel buildings vs pole buildings vs traditional? Everyone seems to have a different opinion on what is best. I want something nice but not break the bank in the process. I'm also not opposed to putting the finishing touches in myself. I'd appreciate any of your opinions / past experiences.

A pole barn construction is probably going to be your cheapest route. They go up very fast if the contractor is familiar with them. Setting the post can be a pain if you have any rock in your area. The nice part of a wood pole barn is the interior finish out can be a little easier to finish out since it’s wood construction.

If you go with a steel building you can either do a weld up building or a pre engineered building. The weld up is cheaper for material cost but more on the labor cost. The nice part of a pre engineered building is that it goes together very fast. A pre engineered building can also clear span a greater distance than a weld up building. If you are in an area that has snow they will take that into account when designing the structure to account for the snow weight on the roof. If you want to keep things simple on cost you can do commercial steel garage doors. Otherwise you can go with more decorative doors that look nicer but cost more. If you go with a steel building I would use steel doors and steel frames. If your storing a lot of toys then ask your insurance if you save any money by having a non combustible structure over a wood pole barn. I hope this helps you with some ideas. Best or luck to you!

After waiting 12 years we finally paved our driveway. About 3/4 of a mile long and I think 725 tons of asphalt, base layer and a wearing layer.

Opened up my garage roof today and did the structural reinforcement on the front overhang. The bays are 14' OC between the steel girders so those use 14' long 2X8 purlins, which I had finished sistering the other day.

However, the old timer that built the garage got creative and used rough cut 18' long 2X8s on the end bays, so the 4' cantilever past the end wall creates the large overhangs.

So, after removing the first 2 metal roof panels I sistered a 4' 2X8 onto the ends and then added another 4' piece centered on the butt joint over the end wall since that is the spot that would be taking all the weight

    Holy shit. $80-$100K? Lol
Mines only 700-800ft long and it’s going to hurt to dish out $25-$30K.
Not sure how long you’d been on gravel, but I’d be willing to bet you’ll have a perma-grin for the next 6 months every time you come home. :D

I did your traditional stick frame on slab (30x40) because I wanted the building to match the house, vs the steel type.
My only complaint was rafters. If I did it again, I’d probably just pay the $3500-$4000 from Trussway off 134th in Vancouver for trusses and have them deliver and set in place. Building rafters by hand with only ladders sucked ass! Also lifting 10ft walls by hand/jack sucked ass LOL.
I still need to hang my doors (barn style) so officially it’s been 18 months and not complete
Still need to acid stain and seal the concrete as well. Gutters finally go on here in a few weeks. Firstchoice Gutter in Vancouver forgot about me, but have great prices and threw in the color black for free (black matches my trim). I used Shurway for a lot of materials, and another place off 134th in Salmon Creek for roofing materials. I have a great priced rock-guy if you decide to put rock on it as well.
(This is my home barn I’m referring to - not the Kalama place, that shop is a different story lol).

I know I’m putting the cart before the horse, but I hung my 72” industrial ceiling fan in the garage. I’ve had it for about 7 months and just wanted to see it up. I think I may paint the tips of the blades the same color as the garage door openers. Still hoping to hang sheet rock this weekend, and try to finish it over my 4 day holiday weekend coming up. 55E1D06E-865F-44B6-897F-0FCC20B0D954.jpg
