I don't believe that can cycle on off like a central air unit. These are run on DC current, they have an AC to DC inverter so they are designed to push out constant cool air to maintain the set temp, rather than short blasts of very cold air to achieve a cooler temp. The inverter makes them much more energy efficient

Makes sense, they do run efficiently. It's just annoying, cuz I can set the temp to 72, and since it runs all the time, the temp gets down to like 68. I have to manually turn it off for it to quit. Or, my other option is to program it to run for a preset amount of time then shut off on its own, but I'd have to do that every day.

There may be an issue with the thermostat. I have mine set on 70 and it tends to keep the space within +/- 2° of the set point. It should adjust the temp of the air coming out to maintain a very consistent temp. Maybe check the setting and see what it is set to as far as +/- range. If its sets to 4 or 5 I can see you will get greater temp variances. I have mine set to 1° and it does well. In some super hot sunny days it cant quite cool enough, or it's hot and I run the oven for a while.

Yeah, I don’t think it should run all the time. Everything I have read mine will cycle on and off as needed. I plan to keep the garage at 75 when hot and maybe 60 for heat year around.

I've always heard this was an issue of the AC being underrated for the area it's servicing. I have a window unit in the garage doing the same thing, never satisfies.
I'm no HVAC expert but did work on them some way back in the restaurant days when we tried to be jack of all trades.

Not saying all cause areas are different but a mini-split is just a compact AC, that why there is freon lines connecting them, that is the "split" part. I have never seen any inverter style room cooling units, might not be something that works is the deep south. Like swamp coolers don't work with our humidity.

Some/most I have seen don't cycle the evap fan (inside fan) just slow it to keep air moving, the cooling (compressor) will cycle off with the t'stat. That motor won't cost you $10 a year to run.
    .
EDIT- just referring to basic mini-splits here. The one I installed did not cycle the indoor fan when on after reach temp, just the cond unit.

    Thanks Ron!

Already planning how I'm going to layout the garage. Need a workbench, cabinets, space for a future compressor, racks for camping/outdoor gear...

Again things can be different but a mini split should have the charge in the condenser. Connect the lines (without leaks) and have the ability to pull a vacuum, open the service valves and should be charged.

I think we have a Samsung unit we added in our vacation home. It’s on a river in the woods (PNW) so AC wasn’t entirely needed, and it has a wood stove and floor heat (water, propane) but we thought one of these units would be easier for the short weekend trips we do there.

We set the floor heat at 65 for the winter, and in the summer we set the ductless unit at 70.
I absolutely love it! It cools quickly once we arrive, and heats quickly too. It has an option for the fan to blow in multiple directions which helps. I wish they would come in different colors, because our place is big cedar timbers, so brown would match great - but they only come in cream/white (or did 3-4 years back).

There was no option for forced air ducts in the home due to the construction (timbers), so this is the next best option. I’d purchase again for sure.
We’ve had zero issues with it the past 3-4 years.

My unit better not be undersized! I don't think it is, since it keeps the rooms colder than I'd prefer. One head can cool my son's room 10 degrees in less than half an hour. His room is on the third floor where it stays hot, and almost 400 SF, so I feel like cooling capacity isn't the issue.

Yes, walls are 2x6 so that will be a good R rating and the attic will be blown in. Should be real tight.
The company I contracted to do the insulation is on point.

Ok. Are your garage doors insulated or non insulated? I ask because I’ve done lots of mini split units in various garage remodel projects. If you have non insulated doors this is the area you will have the lowest R value.

Helping wife prep front porch to re-screen it. Gonna be painting house , modifying our handrails, power washing and staining our decks.

I lost the battle with wife:( Wanted to go back with a Williamsburg blue/ grey trim with red cedar highlights . That got smashed . This will be a lengthy process as we are gonna do most of work besides pressure washing and painting house. Got a great quote :D
Note: Re-screening with a durable pet screen ,in case anyone wants to know.

Must have been his sister that owned our house previously. I could go on for days on the hacks we have uncovered. My latest one is our side entry door, I replaced it last weekend and they had a 2x4 door inside the 2x6 framed opening. That wasn't terrible, but they used cheap fiberboard as a filler that obviously disintegrated. Then when I took out the door frame it was only held in by a single screw. Previous to that, the hanging light fixture fell onto our dining room table and exploded. A 1/2" long screw was anchored only into the sheetrock to hold up a 20-25 lb light! Luckily no one got hurt on that one, the electrical wiring ripping out of the ceiling slowed down the fall.

Love the sound of the screened in porch door.
