I'm supervising the window guys installing new windows. They are pros. This hurt the bank account but our windows were from 1991 and badly needed replacement.

All new windows are in except for 1 they ordered incorrectly.

Are these gaps acceptable? They are coming back tomorrow to fill these with expanding foam. I've never replaced windows so I don't know what's considered normal. I know they can't get them exactly the same as the original windows.

Anything I need to watch for tomorrow when they finish?

Those are huge. You'll likely need some sort of trim to cover that. They probably used an existing size rather than custom making the windows for your openings. Custom = $$$. So existing sizes are usually the way, but knowing they were that much smaller ahead of time would have allowed you to plan a solution.

They claim all the windows are made to order for each customer. We ordered them back in July and they had to make them. They weren't cheap.

They are coming back tomorrow to finish the job. Foam and then some trim on top. I wasn't here when this conversation took place so I'm getting this 2nd hand from my wife.

That seems big...they did mine this year, similar, and wrapped the insert to existing frame with aluminum on the outside, so can't say for sure, but inside just need caulk...good luck on it!16969667977373955178894678614680.jpg 16969668408933195572467506502126.jpg

Correction...last year. Took 11 months to get them...and, yes, freakishly expensive!

The inside looks right on yours, though, so as long as they cover it, it'll be alright, just annoying when you think of how much window you lost due to their sizing. We ran into that on ours, but the old windows were just fogging, mechanisms failing, etc., so I hear you on it!

as long as they are filling the gap with the correct non-hardening foam (to allow for minor movement during different temperatures) AND are going to be properly flashing and trimming things, then there isn't really any issue there. It is standard to run 1/4-3/8" of gap on new construction to allow for the materials to move/expand as they need to.

I called the sales guy (who installed for 30 years) and he said that's what they will be doing tomorrow. I'll make sure it's non hardening foam. Thanks for the tip.

It's amazing how much new windows make the house look as feel better.

New: we actually prefer windows without the grids and the tint is nice.

All of the ones we just installed last year had a gap small enough to seal with clear silicone. I have a buddy that does windows. He came over and measured each opening and sent the dimensions in. They fit really well.

My wife realized dishwasher wasn't heating, and hasn't for a while, hence dishes never clean. Fired up the Googlenator, blew it apart and troubleshooting, looks to be thermistor/float switch. New one ordered. $20 fix (hopefully), which means I saved about $200 getting it repaired, or $500-700 for a new one. I deserve something for all that savings.

hopefully that's the fix. Tell her it was $100 for the part and put the other $80 toward toys.

Replaced a hose bib on the outside of the house several months back. The valve stem was leaking so I took it apart and added some Teflon rope to it to seal it. Putting it back together the pipe spun right off the fitting. Appeared to have been soldered on at some point. Well shit. Turned the water off and ran to the box store for a replacement. They only had 8” hose bibs. Stuck out 2”. Oh well for now. Functional hose and no leak. Finally ordered a 6” frost free bib to replace it.

    IMG_5952.jpg IMG_5953.jpg

All that’s left to do is mortar the brick back together. Pay no attention to my old shop rag “sealant” for now. I stuffed extra insulation into the in wall space and covered the opening with another piece of luan with the pipe hole cut out. IMG_5954.jpg

One spritzed with hot sauce. Also, wrap with gorilla or duck tape to beef it up.

If he's got the kind of dog I think he does, she'll just take the side of the house down with it.

I'd probably put some kind of cage around it to keep her from getting to it.

Don't know where you are, but I had those, wound up replacing regular spigots with 12" anti-freeze spigots. Angle them down, so off with no hose drains the water to the valve, that's a foot back under the house.

You also need to know your r rating for wall insulation. Older houses only need a double pane upgrade not a triple pane which obviously cost more.

I also like color. Don't understand the trend of white washing everything - my wife wants an all white kitchen. Don't know why since she hates to clean......

Tie in a trim piece to hide the gap. That’s the only reason for door frames….hides the door jambs.
