Workin on an old timey shower/tub. Customer had a ton of these deco tiles and wanted a medallion she designed in the shower.

I'm finally getting around to replacing this 32 year old fart fan in our master bath.

Am I supposed to leave this existing metal box frame and find a fan that slides in and plugs in? Just take some measurements before going to Lowe's?

Definitely measure the opening and buy one the same size or larger. I made the mistake of grabbing a couple that were a good deal only to find they are too small for the opening.

But am I supposed to reuse the existing box or do new fans come with this? I was told to get one for remodeling.

Not likely, unless is says it's compatible with that NuTone model.
The exhaust location, depth and mounting holes/tabs really make it difficult if it's not a direct replacement.

    I wouldn't.
3 options avaliable, just look closely at Lowes.
    New construction, remodel, surface mount.

Nutone is still around so I just emailed them to see if they have a direct replacement. It's probably unlikely but figured I would try. I'll go to Lowes in a bit and see what they have.

New fans come with the whole assembly. Some small fans are made to be replaced with just the guts, the fan and motor. The rest stays there. They have them at Home Depot for sure. I’ve done many. I can’t tell by your pictures, but it’s only one type of Nutone. I think it’s 8” x 8-1/2” at the opening.

The ones I bought were complete replacements. I saw a few “just the guts” options for Nutone.

Someone decided I needed a hole in my window last night with a rock, and the neighbors across the street. My buddy had some ply so I got some carriage bolts and will hopefully get the window replaced this coming week.

Replaced 2 of these old nasty, loud, clunky ceiling fans. FB9780BF-4602-4A04-9D8B-8D100409C753.jpg

With two of these new sleek quiet ceiling fans. One in each bedroom.
    0237F211-CF32-4EF2-BC0C-F1375453EDCC.jpg

And they each have a remote and the fan can run with the light off. The old ones couldn’t do that.

Usually they aren’t bad, but the old remote transmitters used to be kinda big, so it was a pain to jam them into the escutcheon and seat it.

It’s been a while since I had to replace a ceiling fan. The one I’ve got to replace is probably original to the house (1989.)

There are also some fancy Dyson bladeless fans? That seem to be pretty hot right now, check them out.
But if your fan blades get dirty like mine do, I can only imagine what the intake on this device looks like after some run time……

Pretty easy actually. My house was built in the 50's so it has old wiring. The old fans didn't have a ground wire installed. But overall take down and install was about an hour on the first one.

This project has been going on for a long time, probably a couple years, on and off, finally got all the wood sanded down and now staining it, unbelievable how long it took to strip and sand all this wood down, next step I will put a couple of coats of spar varnish on it, I was told to use that with the UV protection it has from the sunlight
