Well, I haven't actually done the home improvement today ~ the palm fronds are still coming down and now it's raining like a cow pi$$ing on a flat rock.
There's plenty to be done once the stormy weather passes through and the fronds dry out.

They are! I have one in an enclosure watching the front, and one inside through a window watching the backyard. I was going to get more Ring products to go with my Ring Doorbell but can't beat those Wyzes for a fraction of the price, free 12s cloud clips, remotely access unlimited clips on the microSD card, no subscription fees.

I use the LiftMaster 8500 openers with the remote app, it’s sooo sweeet letting people in remotely! I don’t give out my house key, to anyone.
One downside - when you know you have to let people in, don’t forget to keep the garage to house door unlocked.
I’ve forgot a few times LOL

ETA - the liftmaster also alerts you when a door opens - which is really nice. I try to talk everyone into these.

I second that. Have all my external cameras, garage, dog kennel and dog run monitored all with Wyze....all for less than the cost of 1 Ring cam!

Redid the janky wiring in my garage. I know it doesn’t look it per se but trust me, it’s at least better now. All my outlets were on one 20 amp before through some old undersized wire too! Now it’s split between 2, 20amp circuits and proper size romex....with grounds actually connected unlike before! All of the wire is surface run in my garage from before I bought it, so no problem running it external still. Home warranty company replaced my garage door opener with a WiFi controlled model (Liftmaster) and having myQ control on my phone is the BEST!

The 8500 looks like a nice complete package including the overhead motor, I already had a Genie screw drive motor, took advantage of an CDN Amazon offer and got the msg100 for $30. I almost bought a MyQ wireless remote system like the one that comes with the 8500 but the principle for paying for an annual google/IFTTT subscription, even nominal, was a bit of a turn off. It seems to be a common reaction online. Maybe I'm wrong, if I understand right, it's like paying annually for my smart plugs or smart thermostat just to communicate with Alexa.

No doubt the 8500 reviews look great! For those that have an existing garage door opener, I'd point them to the msg100 to get smart function.

    Screen Shot 2019-02-03 at 7.58.22 AM.jpg

This whole smart automation is pretty cool, being able to call out thermostat adjustments, outside Xmas lights on/off, interior lights on/off etc. I haven't played with chain commands yet, like a routine "Alexa, going to work" which turns on the coffee maker, lights, reads aloud the news, opens the garage door to remote start the car in the winter etc, something Gates probably had over a decade ago.

That said, I probably won't be tying a garage door command with a single or easy word, something my kids or visitors could easily say lol

Should add I took my garage door opener out of my truck last night. The Tundra is too big and parks outside but I do open the garage sometimes to go through or bring stuff in. Now I don't need to worry about someone breaking into my truck and pilfering my garage when we're out in the other vehicle. Those crackheads don't care about alarms and cameras. Just had an idea, gonna play with a voice command to my vent mounted phone to open my garage as I pull in!

This is what I have also. Works great to check if you forgot to put the door down after you left the house.

Just a headsup, the Chamberlain MyQ was the one on my radar before the MSG100, but they charge a nominal annual fee to work with your google mini or Alexa's. Note that might not even matter if you don't plan to use that function, the app still works but my research showed up some unhappy customers with basic connection issues. Make sure you have a robust router in somewhat close proximity either way.

Yes, that part is free. I believe MyQ is one of the few companies that charge for Alexa/Google integration. Works good otherwise?

The MyQ system is a budget friendly way to add some automation to your house too. I added a MyQ switch to my porch light and have it programmed to turn on and off every day. Can also turn the light on from the app if I get home after the light has turned off.

You should be able to program one of the buttons on your remote to control the light switch. Convenient.

I use the app on my phone and and control the garage door and lights.

Wife does not like the app so I did program one of the buttons on the remote in her car to control the light.

It’s great to be able to let people in the house remotely. We were on vacation and had a issue with our house sitter not showing up. With apps on my phone we could open the garage door and turn off the alarm so a neighbor could check on our animals.

I’ve never paid any type of annual fees.
When we were building the AR15 guys recommended these openers (jackshaft) because of how they lock and unlock (wheels, by bolt) every open and close and they can’t be broke into like normal garage door openers. The jackshaft is a lot more reliable than a chain opener and quieter (no chain, mounted to the side of door which leaves room for overhead storage).
I think I pad $50 more per motor, and maybe $50 or something for the wireless.
It was a no-brainer for us in our situation.
    And then there’s this video

My Raynor opener (liftmaster) has built in WiFi connectivity for myQ so I didn’t need a bridge or anything. I just use the phone app. Also hid the opener in the overhead console where the “business card” holder is, fits perfect
