We wanted To get the back yard cleaned up, remove all the alder, blackberry and nettles. It was so dense in some areas, I did not have an idea of the slope. Our adjacent neighbor had his lot cleared and sinCe the guy he hired was he was already in the back, he had access to our yard without going over the septic system pipes. He said the excavator was 55K lbs. He basically removed all the trees, stumps, etc and put it in the back hole. I have a zillion photos, but these show the beginning and end of the clearing. 1960F7CF-DBEF-481E-A820-F8F48B2D3313.jpg90690CCA-D1F5-4618-A582-A613CBD8A6DE.jpg AC737020-1146-4923-94D4-933560712C51.jpg414A8B2A-30F8-4AF3-A5F4-5BE05EC54399.jpg

Got 34 or so GIANT pine trees removed from too close to the house. Noticed some were leaning, and we're about due for a hurricane to come through...here's one on the crane... PXL_20220510_192859311.jpg

Wow what a difference! So he was able to just knock them over and dig the stumps out?
I'm not sure I want to know the price of that...

It wasn't cheap, but it was PXL_20220511_215534859.jpg pretty good for what they did, and they did a great job of not damaging the hardwoods or landscaping (my wife's all about the plants)! Here's an 'after' photo...

Finally got around to pouring the cement in the basement. Had a buddy come over, help me carry my friends little electric mixer downstairs and we went to town. 19-80lb bags it ended up being. Took us just under 2 hours. It’s not the best but it’s level and good enough. Plus most of it will be covered by thinset and tile anyways.

now to let it cure and then build some walls.

He was able to push them over an they uprooted. He would then grab the rootball and squeeze, shake and drop it to remove excess dirt. There were a couple of old stumps, old growth that were there also. One cedar stump was about 4 ft across, it was so big his excavator could not pick it up, but he was able to roll it into the low spot of the yard. This guy definitely knows what he was doing. He is going to come back with a bobcat and rake to get the surface wood pieces out, in a couple weeks.
I was originally going to get the the area Forest mulched, but it kept getting postponed. Since the neighbor had this guy out we decided to go this direction. Nice to have the stumps gone also. I was hoping the other neighbor would get his alder removed, but they are doing it by hand.
The alder grow to a certain height /age then are prone to have the top snap off. Alder propagates via a root system, so they just take over an area eventually….

We've got a neighbor and friend who's yard is just packed with trash trees. I can't remember what they are called (Chinese Locust trees?) but they grow super fast and their root system sounds like the Alders. He likes them because of all of the shade they give his yard - the mosquitos must feel the same way. Unfortunately, they steal the sun from any of the good trees and they keep trying to pop up in our yard. I usually go over in the Spring with my trusty hard hat and trim them down but after a few close calls last year, I've been told by Mrs. Bandito that I can't. :(

I do have permission from her to cut down anything that crosses our fence from his yard though. Someday there'll just be a wall of trash trees on the other side of our fence.

Came back from town last night and noticed one of the kitchen lights was out  Normally not a big deal but they are fluorescent lights and they are on a vaulted ceiling. Both bulbs were out so I figured it was the ballast but I was still hopeful. I replaced all four fixtures around 5 years ago and it wasn't fun.

Turns out it was the ballast but it was cheaper to replace a full fixture than just the ballast...

In all, it took about 45 minutes, including the 30 minute drive to Lowes and back.

Today I R&Red the wax ring on our toilet. Clean up and prep work took longer than actually seating the new wax and toilet. It was a shit job (puuuuuun?). No pics, probably a good thing.

Hello, I am looking for a little guidance on electrical questions. I’ll try Not to bore you and sorry for the novel but hopefully detailed enough. I’m in Texas and Sunday morning while sleeping at 5am our house ( built in ‘98 ) had a surge and had a small electrical fire kill our panel. We lost power to the house and that’s what woke me up. Looked to see if it was just us or the neighbors as well. Just us. Went to the garage and smelt burning electrical smell but no smoke. Called emergency electrician company and they came out immediately. It tripped 1 breaker and the main as well. I knew by the smell it was crispy behind the panel. Electrician pulled panel and there was gone. Traced it back to 1 of our ac units but wasn’t sure what had caused it. Replaced panel and added a surge protector as well. From where all the wires went into the panel seemed to be fine as well. Electrician said it was a very cheap contractor Home Depot panel ( there when I bought the house ) Surprised that everything was working after the fact. Went through the house and checked every plug, circuit for proper voltage/amps and relabeled everything. All seemed to be good. Even came back this morning to do a qc inspection.
When he turned on our electric cooktop ( built in ) to see what circuit it was on to label, the switch worked. Flipped breaker turned off. Ok that’s good. Well, wife went to use it tonight for dinner tonight and lights came on, vent came on but no burners get hot. The circuit for it I looked tonight is a 10 gauge 30 amp at the panel.
questions…. Is it possible that the issue caused damage to the burners or wires in the cooktop? I assume the wiring is ok because of the lights come on and vent works. It’s original and old so if I replace it with another, is a 30 amp breaker ok? Electrician said ( tonight when I texted him when I found the problem ) that the 10 gauge wire is rated 30 amp breaker and if I wanted a 40 amp OR the new cooktop requires/recommends 40 amp I have to have it rewired with 8 gauge by code. thoughts on why burners might not work AND will a cooktop work on 30 amp if I replace with new? Considering it’s worked since we bought the house 10 years ago.
Sorry for the lengthy novel but some backstory as well. Looking for any advice.
    Thanks!

(Assuming it's a 240v cook top) Sounds like your missing a leg. Lights and fan would work if they're coming off the other 120v leg.
I would check the load side of the 30a breaker for proper voltage and then check the junction box at the cooktop for 240v.

I agree with @NWPirate . Check the voltage at the plug to make sure you're getting the proper voltage and eliminate any and circuit/electrical issues with the house wiring or breaker. If all checks out there then the issue is with the cooktop and you can do start troubleshooting there. I'm not an appliance tech but there could be some protection mechanism inside the cooktop to run the burners. Thinking a fuse or internal GFCI that could be more sensitive than the breaker thus tripping at the cooktop downstream and not at the breaker.

By the way, I've seen some of your projects online. As always a pleasure to see them. Great work!

So not sure if you have this in your neck of the woods. But I get a lot of this now. Can be used indoors and outdoors. Porcelain slabs comes in various thickness’s. This one here is .25” for a ceiling in a master bath shower. It will go up in two sections.

Purchased a couple sheds vs one big one for the garden and mechanical tools. It included delivery and assembly, but we had to supply the gravel pad. I have to paint the sheds to the house color. We got more square ft vs a large shed for the lower
cost. It made sense to have all the garden tools and supplies separate. They have a work bench and steel pegboard on the inside. Only one window, but large 72 inch door. We lucked out as it was a dry day for the build. This one guy really was a worker.

Oh he definitely does, the company I work for supplied setting materials for a mess of those gauged porcelain panels for the Denver airport a while back.

Widened a doorway since it’s going to be in a hall and I didn’t like it that small. Next will be framing out the bathroom since the concrete is dry.
Still trying to figure my layout though.

    FIFY
concrete (actually the cement in the concrete) hardens via a chemical reaction with the water. At 7 days you’ll have enough strength to start doing basic framing activities - typically 50% of “full cure strength.” At 14-18 days you’ll be at 75% strength, and 28 days is considered the standard duration for concrete to cure to “full strength” (technically it never stops curing, but the rate of strength increase drops exponentially over time after the initial cure).
