What have you done to your 2nd gen Tundra today?

I previously installed under-hood lights, so I have a circuit that comes on when the hood is open. And I want to be cool, soooo...

I bought this

Led Hood Light Strip in red to match my hoses and oil cap and installed it under the engine cover. The 59" model is a perfect fit.



It gives it a little glow and has a cool startup animation.

This weekend I'll paint the engine cover because some of y'all did a great job of that. I also need to add a harness so I can easily remove the whole unit.

Changed out the front wheel/ hub bearing assys. I’m still getting a slight groaning sound which is why I changed them out. Not as noticeable as before. So, I’m wondering if CV axles need to be replaced or something else perhaps? The next parts did also seem to fix a slight shimmy I would get while braking.

 

Put a 2” lift on. For some reason I now rub the body mount, not sure what that’s all about.


Also picked a fight with a t-post while doing truck stuff. Hooked the winch to it and it started dragging my truck. Got a little bit heated so I forgot to take a picture but I won in the end .

 

Might be the needle bearing in the front diff? Total speculation but that is apparently a very common toyota 4x4 problem

 

That’s it! Checked to see if there was slop on the driver’s side cv axle. Yup! Went for a test drive and switched from 2WD to 4Hi. Noise gone in 4HI. I guess I’m ordering ECGS bushing and replace that cv axle as well. Thanks!

 

Greased the u-joints today - no more annoying “clunk”

I excercised 4HI and 4LO the other day. I felt like that was a maintance accomplishment.

Yeah, looks fine. The only three ways I know if brake fluid needs to be changed is if the brakes are “mushy.” That normally means air in the lines and/ or the brake fluid is old and has absorbed too much moisture. The latter is why they say not to use opened brake fluid you’ve had sitting on the shelf for a long time.

 

What’d you do to check cv slop? Keep the truck on the ground and see if you can move the cb shaft back and forth? Or did you use a pry bar at the diff?

 

Truck on the ground. Place hand on CV axle near where it plugs into the front diff (drivers side), push up not side to side. It won’t take much force.

 

Thank you, gang. I had the new fluid opened about three days. It was originally meant for the tundie, but went into venza shpenza.

Old fluid that oozed out from calipers was about two or three years. I try to do fluid changes every few years because fixing stuff is getting too expensive and I cannot do it on my own. I am tool-impotent.

 

Just did that to mine... Bad news but it does explain the steering wheel shake I have been having, sounds like that is one of the common symptoms. Looks like my speculation just turned into my own problem

 

mines been giving me a slight shimmy and I couldn't tell if it was tires or not... doesn't sound too good then for me either

 

Are you guys seeing this "shimmy" at interstate speeds, say 65+? I have a feeling...

 

Mine starts at about 50ish and gets progressively worse with speed. Only when the driveline components are cold though, a little heat up and it tightens back up a little bit.

 

Mine is a constant shimmy at 52-58 roughly, sometimes goes away but mostly present all the time; was gonna try a different tire shop for getting the tires rebalanced, but I'll check the cv shaft tomorrow

if you ever pressure wash your truck, its pretty easy to blast off wheel weights fyi

 

That's why I convinced @Cruzer to be my test dummy for balance beads . I switched to those with my 17s... Truck rides smooth as glass I just have a steering wheel jiggle now.

 

Not sure what I did by my brakes or calipers seem to be on the way out. Every time I brake, there's like a crunching feel. Since I switched jobs, I no longer have time to try to tackle it myself and will need to pay a shop to do it.

 

I used balance beads to begin with, the shop didn't put the right amount and they never balanced right; so I vacuumed them out and then got them to balance the tires with weights... but they still have a slight shimmy

what beads did you use?

Pulled out the bed liner to start the process of rolling on a durabek bed liner. Happy to find very little to no rust on the bed itself. I also applied a new topper gasket on the front of the truck bed because the old one came out with the liner. I'll try to get rest of the prep done and get the liner rolled on tomorrow. We'll see how my dentist appointment goes first though.

Replaced the cabin air filter and pulled out the dash cluster and transmission trim pieces for cleaning and painting. I keep avoiding the bed liner project by creating new ones. Procrastination wins this time, but it will all come together soon.







Edit: painting complete. Also added red carbon fiber stickers to the cluster. Because you know, you can never get enough red on a TRD.
