I ramped up and power washed the underside to prep for fluid film application tomorrow after it dries. For those who've proactively fought rust before, any advice?

I got 6 spray cans of Fluid Film and I plan to touch up rusty spots with Corroseal. I previously Corrosealed all rust two years ago but rust resurrected in a few spots.

205k. It was running like new when the alternator went out. So smooth I didn't realize it had died until I lost power steering.

I changed the oil and filter while I was changing the alternator and there was no 'glitter' in it. There honestly weren't and warning signs. Just a fluke.

No knock until I started it. It caught me totally off gaurd. By the time I got out to listen and figured out what it was it let go.

When you changed the filter was the center support tube there? If it broke off in the old filter, then the new filter could have collapsed starving the engine of oil. It’s the only explanation I can think of.

here’s an easy way to tell. Get under the truck and grab the drivers side cv axle where is attaches to the front diff and see how much play you have. It’s it’s going bad there will be tons of play and alll that play and looseness is the vibration I felt thinking it was a tire. It’s an easy fix just messy.

Nope. Still it there. I remember making sure it was seated correctly in the housing before putting the new filter on it.

Washed the car, changed oil, installed fumoto drain valve, greased driveshaft, changed power steering fluid. Should be last of the season since it's starting to get cold.

and you're sure you put oil back in it? Even with no oil I wouldn't expect it to immediately throw a rod... what type of oil have you been running? How many quarts? Intervals on oil changes?

Sorry for the horrible luck. I've been under the impression that these are 300k mile trucks.

It had to be some kind of a defect. Id be curious to see what the bearing and crank look like. Maybe the cap or a cap bolt failed.

damn, maybe get it over to a shop (if you can't do it yourself) and see if them can tell you what went wrong?

    oem

With SPC adjustable UCA’s and Coachbuilder outter tie rods, and the oem splash shields removed

Oem UCA exposed ball joint for those interested

    With ARK splash guards installed

how much clearance I have with the Coachbuilder’s and tires.

Just waiting on the Amazon van to arrive with the 31mm or 32mm socket required to torque down the UCA top nut.
Dropping it off at alignment shop at 0700 tomorrow assuming the socket works.

Other than a 31mm or 32mm nut I would recommend having a 22mm wrench; long & box ended or whatever would be preferred bc I had to use giant vice grips and a breaker bar which sucked.

I’m also waiting on a grease gun to arrive so I can fill and then maintain the tie rod heim joints as well as zerk UCA ball joints. New toys to play with!!

It took me yesterday and part of today to finish bc I didn’t have all the proper tools and I go slow and am meticulous when doing things that involve holding the wheels on.

btw, 173 ft lbs of torque really is a doozy but I got it done solo in the driveway so anything is possible

The cap for the trailer harness I installed a couple years ago came off because the hardware had rusted away. Replaced it with the much better updated design that comes on most trucks these days. I wrapped and loomed the wire harness before I installed (not shown). I didnt know the Hooke Road bumper cut out fit the 41144 plug design or I would have just gotten that one back in 2020.

I just put in a tad over 8 qts yesterday and it registers a bit shy of max on the dipstick on my 2012.

Does your alignment tech know how to use the cam tabs?

I ask bc I just dropped mine at Tires Plus and the guy said he has never seen adjustable UCA’s like the SPC’s I just put on, which was exactly what I was afraid he was gonna say. Then he said they only do OEM specs even though it’s lifted.:eek2::confused:

Technically it drives better than it did before I drove it to tires plus, but the alignment specs looks like they did nothing.

i guess I should find an off-road shop that does alignments, not really sure

8.4 put me right in the middle of the dip stick.
I usually put 8QT then drive the truck around then adjust dip stick.
