What have you done to your 2.5 gen Tundra today?

Could you sketch up a quick wiring diagram?

 

I'm not sure how much of a difference being lower to the ground makes, but I'm sure there's some. My T4R sits almost as high as my Tundra and the light output is significantly better. But, that goes to your second point. I have an HID retrofit on the T4R. I didn't even think of the fact that the Pro LEDs aren't projectors. I think that probably made more of a difference in the Corolla than it being closer to the ground, but that's just my assumption. Projectors should have better output, or maybe usable light, right?

 

Wish I could but all I can remember from that long ago was tapping into the existing reverse light and running a separate in cab switch. Honestly I was surprised to see my backup camera pop up when I engage them from the in cab switch, I figured it would work that way when in reverse but pushing the in cab switch was a nice surprise.

 

Interesting. Do you think you have both the reverse switch wire and in-cab switch running to a relay?

 

Yes and if I remember correctly I tapped the bd lights somewhere on the rear passenger side.

 

Depending on where you tapped the reverse light, your switch may be sending power “backwards” through the reverse wire circuit, and that power is triggering the HU to think the truck is in reverse. The anytime camera Mod works similar (only that it is only powering the signal going to the HU and not the entire reverse circuit.

when I have time to sit down and review the EWDs, I’ll be putting something together that give me Switch/reverse output for the lights but will keep it isolated from the HU side because I’ve already got the ABC /front camera setup

If I had to guess I'd say you are exactly correct in how it's working for me. I turn wrenches and dig ditches, electrical is not really my thing. I knew someone on here would know how and why it's working like that. Like I said I was surprised when the camera came up with the push of the in cab switch.

If you had to guess I'm not going to hurt anything having it wired that way? Long as it's not gonna hurt anything, I gotta say I love having it this way.

 

If it hasn’t so far, then it should be fine.
Does your shifter display show “R” when the switch is on? The only thing I’d think might be adversely affected is the ECU thinking you just threw the shifter into reverse while still driving forward at a sited that you shouldn’t be switching to reverse in…but that would have been apparent right away if it was a problem.

for other things it is important to understand the implications of tapping wires when introducing external current sources. That’s why reading and understanding the EWDs is so important before tapping a wire

 

I have my rear bumper lights on an on/off/auto and its one of my favorite mods so far. Its great for tailgaters.

Hi Casey tnx for info. So I do notice on the multi info 3.5" screen on dash that whether I'm in park or drive that the R for reverse does illuminate along with whatever I'm truly in. However if I'm in park the truck does not move, if I'm in drive the truck stays in drive at both low and high speeds. So only the R for reverse illuminates in conjuction with whatever I'm truly in P or D. I'd hate to find out at a good speed in drive the truck bangs into reverse, hasn't happened yet, and I hardly ever put the lights on from the in dash button moving forward. However like George said I have used it to back off someone tailgating. This hardly ever happens because I'm typically driving much faster than everyone else. Besides that I have used it to momentarily check my trailer when towing. If I remember correctly 1 time out of many uses, when I had them on for a longer period while in drive I think I remember a traction control light pop on once. When I turned the truck off it went away and hasn't come up since.

So what's your thoughts now? From your posts you seem like an intelligent man.

 

To be sure, I need to chase out the EWD.
But the control for the transmission isn’t via that signal wire so you’re not risking the truck actually trying to shift based on that circuit being hot. The fact you are seeing the R light up in the dash doesn’t surprise me.

I can sketch something up tonight that shows a diagram of what is happening. Right now, getting ready to head out

 

Rewired my hood bulge light today. Before I had it wired into my daytime running light on the driver side. It came on when I started truck up. Went off when headlights come on. Which is what I wanted. Bulge light blinked with driver side turn signal, ok. Not with passenger side. Not ok. That bugged me to no end. Tried to add a wire to passenger side with poor results. Couldn’t find the right fuse in box for the daytime running lights. Sooo, I got a relay and wired it to a green switch. Not what I wanted, but it’ll work.

 

No worries. Honestly don't even need to waste your time on a sketch for me. My only concern is that I don't F something up the way it is. Long as it's good I'm good. I like it the way it is and long as I don't risk screwing anything up I'm perfectly fine leaving it as is. That little R momentarily lighting on the dash along with whatever I'm truly in does not bother me in the least, hell it's another way besides the switch lighting up to remind me I have them on lol. Plus a free anytime back up camera is a win in my books.

Can't say I really care about seeing a visual cue to my shifter position. By this time I'm strictly on a feel for position basis.

 

Ended up not working today so decided to hit the very lower edge of the truck, behind the running boards, with some bedliner spray as it always looked unfinished there to me.


Then hit the tow hooks with about 6 coats of red plastidip spray.


And while I was in between coats on the tow hooks, I cleaned and taped and added some color to my engine cover. For now just a red "accent stripe" and white for the Toyota T. Doesn't look quite that electric red in person but it does pop for sure. Put a nice thumb print on the T when I went to put it back so resprayed and had to wait for that to go on later.

 

Did you try the IGN fuse spot?

I thought about that. If I did that, when I turn my headlights on the bulge light would stay on. Toyota dealership told me amber would be ok above the headlights as long as the bulge light goes off when headlights come on. White light above headlights won’t pass inspection. I guess Off-road would be a different story. I guess the way I have it now, I can turn it on or off when I want.

 

The RC hood bulge light has amber & white lights. I did the amber to go with my day time running lights. Maybe someday I’ll wire the white light to a switch.

 

Those are bad ass. Never heard of them till now. Already have a meso button but also interested if anyone has feedback on them. Doesn’t hurt to have a variety

 

Way more noticeable. Night and day difference. The pro headlights were decent. But these are much brighter.

 

Interesting, I like this. Does it go on the outside, or do you have to open the housing up and put it inside? Is it noticeable up close? This combined with the hot tails option A would be perfect for me.

Just went to the mountains yesterday then promptly washed it. Just put deposit on 22 ORP Army Green 4runner so in the near future the 12 Single cab will be for sale. Ugh, I like that little truck. The 12 gets a shell Tuesday for a couple weeks camping but since the Runner fell in my lap, it might be hard to have 3 Toys for two adults.

 

I know the feeling. My stepmom will be looking to sell her 4Runner in a year or two so I might see if I can get it for my wife. I’d still keep my trucks though, at least plan to but who knows how I’ll feel then and our future kid(s) situation. And when if and what the next gen will offer
