What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Swapped out the ATs for my Blizzaks on Sunday, and sprayed a fresh coat of clear Woolwax on the undercarriage last night at the local Rent-a-Hoist. Just in time for the snowstorm due to hit Michigan later tonight.

Two things:
1) Are you certain that new drums are needed?

2) If yes, the OE drums are expensive. But aftermarket drums can be ok. I have used both with success. Just have to consider is the money saved worth it.

Have not seen Advics branded brake drums for sale for 1st Gens.

 

Can spec the drum to see if it can be turned.

Can see if they are in spec and might turn and still run them instead of replace.

Well, it isn't binding or anything. It moves smoothly. Just that it does not flop around, I do have to use my hand to go left/right/up/down. I was very careful with needle bearings, though I can't, of course, discard the possibility. What I will probably do is do the other joints and see how it feels and decide.

Maybe it is because of temperature. It isn't exactly COLD, but it is pretty cool.

 

Alright. Someone advise. Is this ATF burnt or what? Looks pink on a paper towel, but pretty dark in a bottle…

Smell it. That will tell you if it’s burnt.

 

Pass it through a coffee filter & see how much clutch dust is in it.

 

Looks pretty normal to me. Especially the first pic in the bottle.

 

VSC Tundra, so no LSPV for me to mess with and I’m glad of that.

Do you think there would be any issues with me using SS braided lines with the increased pressure of the hydraulic VSC braking on my truck? For the moment I’m not going to order any until it’s determined that I need them. One of my front hard lines is all banged up, works fine but looks like it needs to be replaced.

Braided lines still contain rubber inside and are capable of collapsing with age/time. Hard lines won't, but will bend/break.

 

Started it, brushed the snow off. It's been 7 days since our last drive.


EDIT: Something about getting her out in the snow, like a dog that finally gets to run free...
Not bad here today. Big fluffy flakes in the air. Not bad traffic either for the day that it is. Win win.

 

Answering my own post just as an update.
I brought the drive shaft down to my mechanic. He moved it around, told me that while it seem a bit stiff, he says it feels fine and said it should loosen up.
I installed the other 2 joints and they all feel the same so I am guessing it is normal - yes, I whacked it around and I can confirm it loosend a bit.
Installed the shaft on the truck, drove around, squeeling noise is now gone and I did not feel any vibration or something so I think I am good.

Here's what I did to my FGT today, I parked it in the garage for the first time ever! A lesson I have learned, if you keep buying tractors eventually you run out of room to park the truck. No more scrapping the frost off the windshield in the morning!

 

Replaced rotors and pads on my AC. Got Dynamic Friction fully coated rotor kit from Rock Auto. The rotors look really nice although rust is not a concerm in SC. I bought the hardware kit from the Rock but the pins were longer than my OEMs so I tossed them and cleaned up my originals. I did use two spreaders per side, however. Interestingly my passenger side the outboard pad was much more worn than the inboard. Pistons moved easily and cleaned up nicely with some Brakleen. No leaks seen. I’ll keep an eye on wear before deciding if I need to rebuild or replace caliper. I did have a friend help me with the lifting and torquing since I had surgery 3 weeks ago and not supposed to lift anything heavy or overhead.

 

Got my estimate back from the repair shop. Figuring out if I want to pull the trigger on this guy, while it is 15% off for the front bumper:

So many things one could buy haha. I’m looking at catch cans/oil separators now. I threw some fuel codes a couple weeks ago. My fuel trims were way off. I swapped the MAFs between my trucks and cleaned the throttle body without removing it on the offending truck that had codes. Codes went away. The oily buildup behind the throttle plate is my suspected culprit because nothing else has changed and both MAF sensors are reading well. Who has a good catch can recommendation to prevent some of this buildup?

ideally it with be both safe/functional and not cost $500. Or is that too much to ask?

I had maybe the luckiest moment of my life today. I changed the oil. But get this - I greased all the zerks without having to move the truck back and forth to get access to all of them. All 8. First shot. Maybe some of y’all do that on a regular basis, but not me. It’s a good day!

2001 4Runner. I've had it 9 years now. The interesting thing about it is it has just about all of the Limited features, including moon roof and leather seats, but is designated an SR5. It has two main jobs, towing my tractors around and snow plowing the roads. It's somewhat modified - Tundra brakes, Cruiser (?) rear suspension, aux trans cooler, roof rack, after market fog lights, LED's etc. She is a great workhorse.

 

Factory E locker?

 

I have always liked that configuration and looked into buying one several times. The problem I had is I never found a used base model 4runner. They all had the girly stuff like sunroof, power seats and every "luxury" gadget and option imaginable. A more utilitarian, K.I.S.S. principle, green jeep-like no-nonsense workhorse 4runner would be right up my alley, but I guess they weren't targeting that market.
