I was hauling a utility trailer just turned off hwy and breaks went to floor but did pump up, made it to friend home unhooked trailer with electric breaks and had no more break problem, drove to mechanic shop asked him what that could be ,he said must be coming from trailer, so how could that be , never had that happen before? so drove 3 miles just pulled into a driveway real slow no bumps in road and left wheel fall off lower ball joint so my question is could that be why I lost my breaks ? from loose ball joint or other problem? I just had a bad feeling some thing was going to happen, But love my tundra anyways

My guess is the trailer had nothing to do with your brake problem. The brake problem and the wheel problem, could be related, but I wouldn't make that assumption. Just tackle one problem at a time, and any such connection will become self evident.

Thank you all for your comments master cylinder is fine no lost fluid but i feel it was a goat break thing like a warning from above to get checked out now! so strange I think its just so strange how could the breaks work just fine, after unhooking trailer ? it should have nothing to do with the trailer unless you had air or a leak

Master cylinders can also leak internally. The sign for that is it'll be wet near where I'd goes in the cab.

And I'm spit balling hear, but possibly something with the break booster?

Welcome. Gino's got some good advice there, start looking for fluid leaks as he indicated. I don't think the ball joint was separate issue from the brakes.

No not really. I'd start by fixing that ball joint and the do some test drives and go from there. It's very possible that you just got crappy luck that day and every thing went out at the same time

There is no connection between your truck's hydraulic brake system problem and the electric trailer brake system. Are you certain it was the lower ball joint that failed, and not the wheel bearing? A wheel bearing with play in it will cause the braking symptoms you describe, but rear shoes out of adjustment, or an internally bypassing master cylinder could be the cause too. You could have two separate issues, or it could be related.

A picture or two of the offending area could clear things up nicely.

I completely agree @craftypaws . I rely on what a mechanic tells me too. When you don't know; you don't know....I pay a bit extra and take it to a dealership because I don't have a choice. Some people on here may think that's ridiculous and a waste of money but shit; as far as I know, everything has always been diagnosed and fixed correctly.

I would say master cylinder as well. What you discribed are symptoms of one starting to fail. Like @landphil suggested, make sure the rear shoes are adjusted properly. The brake system on a first gen is already taxed, and anything not adjusted properly or failing really is noticeable.

The utility trailer made your brake system show you something is wrong. Hope you had trailer brakes.

No problem bud, and welcome to the forum. Fair warning though. There is a good chance that this will turn into a bs thread here soon. We got 3 of the heavy hitters here now so this will probably go off the rails quick. Lol

    You ready in 7 years?

Hell, I just talked to a commercial camper hauler today and I could see my ass doing that for a bit.
