I don’t want to start any food wars but I can never understand why vets push Science Diet and Royal Canin. The ingredients seem so bad to me. 80 bucks for a large bag of corn. I’ve been told they get kick backs and their schooling has very little focus on nutrition. My vet was adamant about my Vizsla starting a prescription SD to lower her PH. 6 months of that food and she was as bad as I’ve seen her. Stopped cold turkey and she’s on Nulo and is back to normal.
I mean absolutely no offense to anyone who has a pup that does well on it as that’s the most important thing.

:notsure: maybe it depends on the breed? Some are more sensitive than others. My danes thrive on it, and my vet who I would trust with both of my dog's and my future dog's lives recommends it.

Edit: I'm talking about Royal Canin. I've also heard bad things about SD.

My dog does really well on Iams.

She had chronic urinary tract infections from the time we got her. The vet finally asked what we are feeding her...I told him Blue Buffalo.

He told me to get her off of it immediately. Too much protein, which was making the pH of her urine way too high.

    Totally kidding, they're great dogs.
Anyway, my Corso's eat Earthborn Holistics and my Neopolitan eats Royal Canin, but switching him to Earthborn brand soon.

    Orijen!

My wife and I tried a number of brands and types of food for our Lab and Orijen has been the best for his overall health, appearance, and energy level. They make several different protein mixes in case of any dietary needs and are the only brand with a Large Breed Puppy specific formula that isn't all chicken.

2 Generations of Labrador's and now a Brittany have been fed Diamond Lamb & Rice dry food. One of the Labrador's lived to 16 years with no major health problems... the other one is 9 now and the Vet is amazed at how fit he is at that age. It's available at Tractor Supply and some feed stores. I won't feed anything else.

There were 2 of the Cain Corso's in our neighborhood that tried to eat a Chinese guy out for a walk. Blinded him in one eye and put him in intensive care for about a month. The owner's were the ones at fault for leaving a gate open. Like most dog attacks... it is usually the owner. Your dogs are beautiful.

We have a bird dog and hunt him hard. We feed him Taste of the Wild. He likes it and maintains a good weight. It’s not crazy expensive and is still quality.

My three mutts get cheap stuff from Costco and lots of table scraps. My three previous got top shelf food and didn't live past 7 years old. One got ate up with tumors, another had a rare blood disease and one had lymphoma. I'm done with pure bred dogs and expensive dog food lol.

    None.....yet
Everyday. Matter of fact the wife had a batch of beef cooking for them when I walked in the door. I finished the rice, mixed veggies with meat and they are chowing down now. They seem to be very health and the vet has never said it would not be a detriment to their (4 corgis, pics in another post/ thread) health.

That’s the key. If your pup does well then that is what matters. The Science Diet I was buying for 90 bucks had a very unimpressive ingredient list. I’m definitely not judging what people feed their dogs. I remember the first few years I fed my dogs Blue Buffalo and out of nowhere they were both getting sick as hell and not wanting to touch their food. Ever since I’ve been jaded towards the brand but others I’m sure have great luck.

    Thanks.
I started training my Male right when I got him at 6 weeks old. He's the best dog I've ever had. He's everyone's favorite. My female lives up to her breed being protective out on a leash, but she'd be in your lap in 30 seconds in the house.

I hear ya! I used to train Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and they are one of the fiercest dogs I have ever been around, except around their family.

Raw food. Get it from a local farmer. He gives me all of his scraps and organ meats ppl don’t want. Includes the bones too. I meal prep once a month for him. Takes like 2hrs

Brand isn't so much an issue.
    Things to consider are:

    Avoid corn on the ingredients

Make sure there is a meat towards the top of the list

Unless you are going to have a drug dog who trains daily like damn Micheal phelps, you don't need high protein just a balanced diet. High protein messes them up otherwise, all kinds of issues, but primarily urinary tract infections.

Chicken based foods are the best all around, Turkey is similar in nutrients. Lamb, if similar to beef. Any fish based one is good for their hair as the oil in the fish makes it shiny and shit.

As a puppy give them puppy food ( I used blue buffalo puppy food for my German shepherd, he did well, the adult version gave him the shits though so I switched to the Sam's club brand for price and quality.

Also with puppy food, mix with a little bit of water if they seem to no want to eat the puppy food. Could be to hard for them right away.

With my dog, I fed twice a day as a puppy until 1 year old, then I dropped down to 1 time a day. Helps prevent bloat from them eating too fast and too much.

Last thing, avoid corn (that's a double tap..corn is shit for fuel and dog food.)

When did they get the blue buffalo bug? I had similar issues, vet Bill's and all kinds of thing. Emailed their customer service quite a bit trying to get things straight

It’s been a good six-seven years now. I did enough research after to know your rolling the dice with that brand so I stay clear.
