Unless you have a need for ownership, I would look long and hard about the cost to rent over the long term. Better yet, after you rent one you really like see if they would let you make a long-term deal for renting at a lower price (cut out agency fees, etc.). That's what I'm planning on doing. I'm renting a 28' Dutchman Kodiak in August and planning on starting that search myself. Consider the payment, maintenance, registration, storage (if required) and depreciation (https://camperreport.com/rv-depreciation-everything-possibly-want-know/) you will most likely be better off not buying. But I certainly respect it if you really want to buy.

Renting is fine if your not going to be using it for 1-2 weeks at a time. It is also nice to have one loaded with all your stuff ready to go at any time.

Looking at travel trailers and found the exact one we want. Dry weight is 7400 lbs and tongue weight is 755lbs. It's the Forest River Heritage Glen Hyper-Lyte 29xbhl. Payload of my tundra is 1,245 leaving me ~500lbs for passengers and crap and it will be a family of 4. With little kids we're under weight, but that only lasts for so long. Is this too much trailer for the tundra? (I'm leaning towards yes) Main trips will be in TX if that helps.

IMO, yes - too much tongue weight. With a 100lb WDH you’re likely over GVWR and your kids will only keep getting bigger.

I figured I’d have to go with a bigger truck. I hate going away from Toyota, but it’s unavoidable

That tongue weight is also bone stock and empty. Any added options or tanks filled and that is going up. If you had the wife and kids follow in a separate vehicle with gear then you could probably do it.

Then you're kinda boned. :( You'd either have to compromise on the trailer or you have to get a truck with higher payload capabilities.

7x14 flatbed utility trailer with tandem independent axles. Brakes on all 4 wheels. 32" tires. 3-axis coupler. Stake pockets for removable walls. Hopefully study enough to carry a 2.5 ton vehicle on it.

Keep your Tundra and buy a motorhome, lol. That's prolly what we'll do down the road. Just don't want a bigger truck. Hell, I'll most likely sell the Tundra and go back to a mid size.

Lurking for a while. Longtime TW member, but first post here. I feel different. We only have 3 of us, 2 bipeds and a dog. We have a 20' with no slides. Comfortable enough to eat breakfast in, but large enough to not feel cramped. Large fridge, and AC. I fully agree that I go camping to be outside. I spend as much summer as we get, in Buffalo, outside. But I can pack enough sh!t that whatever the adventure throws at us, we are prepared. Good and bad. Plus I truly enjoy having my own bathroom on board. It scales out at about #5200 ready to camp, no water though. And damn does the Tundra pull it with ease. Don't have a picture with the Tundra yet, but here's one with the Taco

to get it back on topic. what about this trailer? Hitch weight of 645lbs and dry weight of 6200lbs. Or are trailers of about this size just too much for the Tundra? The layout has to be one with a rear bunkroom so I'm trying to find smaller trailers with it. I'm really trying to find the right trailer without having to get rid of the tundra. I like reliability and no truck note :D

Personally, I wouldn't consider anything that has a GVWR over about 8000lbs and nothing over 25 feet at a maximum. That one is over 10k on the total rating and loooooooong. Way too much for the Tundra IMO. How many do you need to sleep? If you jsut need the bunks for a couple extra bodies, then there are a couple in the R-Pod line that have bunks https://forestriverinc.com/rvs/travel-trailers/r-pod?RegionSelected=1#floorplans If you don't have the truck full of crap you can pretty safely run any of the R-Pods.

it'll be at least 4 people at all times and then more on occasion. The bunkhouse layout allows the kids to have their own "room" and that's the style we've decided on. That's the smallest bunkhouse style i've found :bananadead:

@aggie_tundra if you are willing to get a trailer without a slide that's an easy way to keep weight and required maintenance down, but with 4 people I understand the appeal of the space.

Yeah i've looked at that one and that style, but it's got to be the bunkhouse style where the bunk beds are in a separate room. I think it's just wishful thinking that i can keep my tundra, but it just ain't gonna happen. To your second message, space is a big deal for the wife. I'd have no issues with a no slide camper if it was just me, but wife/kids/pets is a whole different ballgame.

This is what I’m looking at. Might be a bit much but love the floor plan.

What about these? The master closes off and the bunks are at the other end. They are still long, but they are much lighter. https://forestriverinc.com/rvs/travel-trailers-and-fifth-wheels/impression/24BH/4225 and https://forestriverinc.com/rvs/travel-trailers-and-fifth-wheels/impression/26BH/4226

Just some of the alternatives that Forest River provides. Other manufacturers may have better options. I'm just trying to give options that might be workable. You just have to decide if the perfect trailer is worth giving up the Tundra for, or if you are willing to compromise just a tad on the trailer to keep the truck you have.

Yeah I found the perfect layout from heartland I think and the dry weight was 5700lbs, but the hitch weight was somehow around 750lbs.
