Nice rig! We are set to pick up a 28' Airstream next March. What upgrades did you install to help with you tow performance? Looking for new tires as well, so would appreciate advice on that too. I see in your photos that you are using stock mirrors...any issues with those vs. installing towing mirrors? I have a 2018 1794 Edition Tundra. Safe travels!

Our has a rear view camera. It was very much needed when towing with the Tacoma but not as much with the Tundra. Can see behind the trailer much better now with those mirrors.

Only thing I added was a quality weight distribution hitch.

Have you been passed by a semi on the expressway yet?

Also, have you hauled anything? Seems like that combo at that weight could be a handful.

So you are OK with being over your truck tongue weight capabilities, as well as your max towing capabilities? Will you be using this toy hauler for its intended purpose? or will you be using this toy hauler just as a standard travel trailer. Just wondering, where your weights will be. Will they be on the lower end of the trailers weights or the higher end of the trailers max weights.

Yes, and yes. So far not even a hint of butt-puckering

LOL I love it when the weight-police chime in to try and make someone feel awful about their purchase here. "ZOMG YOU'RE TOO HEAVY" :crapstorm:

Yes, I am OK with it, but your statement isn't entirely accurate. While I am overweight on the hitch weight, I'm not on max towing, but I appreciate your concern. I ride a motorcycle every day as my main mode of transportation, in Denver. You want to talk about risk taking? HA! My perspective on risk taking is likely very different from the average weight-police Tundra forum member, I'm sure.

She's 32 feet long, but only 6000lbs. dry. Add on 480lbs. for water, plus 600lbs. for gear/food/bedding, plus 1400lb for 2 Harley's (Softails, not big baggers, one is actually only 600lbs the other is 700lbs) and that puts me at about 8700lbs. give or take a fat dog or two. I combined that with an E2 WDH and this thing pulls like a dream.

Is it a risk? Sure, but so is breathing these days, AMIRITE? #ronajoke

Dude, you're already rounding down, that's never good. That, and we are all good with you doing with risk what you will, but when you increase our risk when we share the roads, we become concerned.

By all means, you do you. I'm about to go shoot black tar heroin and drive my dump truck in rush hour traffic... because laws and better judgment are for squares, man.

Wow! That's quite an upgrade from the Wolf Pup! Congratulations!

How is it to backup? To be honest, I sometimes struggle with my 21 foot trailer in tight spots. A 32 footer would terrify me!

Thank you! It's really not bad at all. In fact a bit easier because the small steering inputs have less of an effect on the swing when backing it up. Wife was helpful as the spotter too.

I'm very conservative when it comes to towing, but we all stand a much greater risk of getting hit by a texting or drunken driver than from someone towing over the limit of their TV.

Bashing someone is not going to make anyone change their decisions. I learned long ago not to waste my time giving unsolicited advice. Even when people ask for your opinion they are likely to ignore it and do what they want.

    Safe travels everyone.

Where are you collecting your data from?

What makes the deaths caused by people driving undersized tow vehicles any less tragic?

Since 'bashing' doesn't work, how would you address someone talking openly about their desire to text/drink and drive?

What makes their poor judgment (DUI, texting, sleepy, etc) any different than the towing example here, especially with the absence of data?

I do have a question though. What is the towing capacity of your specific truck based on the code on the driver's side door and the owner's manual based on that code? I only ask because I have a 2020 TRD Sport 4x4 DC and according to my code and looking up that code in my owner manual it says my max towing is 9600# and tongue is 920#. I wanted the Sport in the crewmax but the towing was capacity was less with the options I have, which really is nothing. Believe me, I am not questioning anything you are doing, I was just wondering if I missed out on something.

Days like Tuesday made me glad I upgraded tow rigs. My father in law lost another 4l60 up in the mountains. It was only 100 mile round trip but going through winding mountain road and steep decline/ inclines. Exhaust brakes are amazing, made it all the way down the hill only using my brakes to come to a complete stop everything else was all exhaust/engine braking.

Trailer weighs 1500lbs and is 7000lbs gvwr

truck weighes 5500-6000 so we were right at or just over gvwr on the trailer, it does have upgraded radial tires but still 3500lbs axles

The trailer felt right around 15% tongue weight as the truck bed was loaded with camping/ hunting supplies.

tongue weight estimate is around 1000-1200 lbs. so I would have been over my tundras gvwr by at least 600 lbs between 2 full grown men and the tools we took. I was probably within 300-400lbs of my rams gvwr.

All in all I could have done it with the tundra but it would have been a stressful tow. With the ram it was one hand on the wheel drinking coffee and sharing hunting stories.

Good to see I could go with something like @CO_Native. My wife and I are currently looking at some form of “light duty” toy hauler like yours as the weights are more inline with the Tundra for now. We’re looking at something like a Wildwood 251SSXL. Also interested in any other similar floor plan layouts in light duty toy haulers. Goal would be to use it simply as a camper for now to upgrade our rig and gain some additional space, utilizing the toy area for hauling the kayaks and bikes. Eventually it would hold a 2 seat side by side of some kind, which would most likely then also facilitate the upgrade of my truck to match the added weight (thinking diesel f350 SRW) as no way I’m going to be towing close to max here in the mountains of Idaho and nearby Montana. At least we’d already have a trailer capable of doing what we needed when it’s time to upgrade the truck. Then down the road we can upgrade the camper to a larger 5th wheel toy hauler, something with dedicated garage space and a wide body rig, as I’ll have a truck that can tow it. Plan is to keep the tundra though regardless, it’s paid off, I’d rather keep it. Also, would love to supercharge it instead of upgrade the truck to a heavy duty….but I feel that the cargo carrying capacity just isn’t there if I’m going to be loading a 31+ foot camper to almost 10,000lbs. That and with 2 dogs, wife, and baby in the truck, don’t wanna risk it. Also…..could use a crew cab truck as eventually we’ll have at least 2 kiddos and honestly, a car seat barely fits in the DC with the front passenger seat uncomfortably close to the dash, as they can’t touch. A heavy duty truck will be the next logical option

Took the boat up to lake wallenpaupack a few weeks ago. 10.2 mpg going up and down all the hills, I expected worse and was pretty happy with it. Boat’s a 95 Chaparral 1930 ss

    So I've got a 2021 SR5 TTS Crewmax.

I'm picking up this 27 ft Forest River coming in just under 6k lbs empty tomorrow and the only thing extra to tow it is a WD hitch I got. We should be good... :D

I feel like I may want a trans cooler if I get around to moving it a lot but it sure seems a lot of folks are getting along just fine in the length/weight without. :notsure:

I am also towing a 27' KZ Sportsmen bunkhouse, loaded on a long trip the TT weighs in at around 6k#'s. I live up in New England, last weekend we took a trip north about 100 miles from home up into the mountains and my trans temps maxed out at around 260*F. I have a 2020 TRD Sport. I know the trans warning light comes on around 302*F, i think. I have been towing with this truck since new, without a trans cooler and I have had no issues. I would say we have been on 6-7 trips in total and they are all usually up into the mountains of New Hampshire and Maine. So far so good. We will be taking an 800 mile trip in a few weeks down to South Carolina, fingers crossed all goes well. I actually have the aftermarket cooler for the truck, but I just have not installed it, nor do I think I will. I personally think you will be ok without the cooler. Good luck and safe travels.

I am on the lookout for an open aluminum car trailer and I want to start towing my car to the track, and retire my little tire trailer. First trip coming up to Sebring International Raceway in October, I'm going to rent a U-Haul car transport as kind of a trial run. It's only 4 hours so I feel like it may be a good test.

With the U-Haul transport (2200 lb I think) I think I'm looking at gross trailer weight of 5300 and if I can find something like a trailex I would be closer to 4100-4200.
