Hey all, been stalking the forms for a little bit, but this is my first post here. I’m looking at getting my first 1stgen, the one I’m looking at is an 06 with 118k miles, frames been replaced from the recall, but I’m new to these trucks and rust scares me. What do y’all think about this under carriage? Anything pop out at y’all? Thanks for the help A20F263C-7F98-4410-B8D4-65196D2A3F46.jpgBF30B085-9E20-465F-8150-C1DC55BF042B.jpg43D90DCC-0290-40D7-8DA4-893BFE8B3AB9.jpg

    Welcome from Vegas.
Id say those rusty ass bolts and leaf springs on the first pic pop out a bit. Seen worse?
What does the rest of this truck look like and whats the pricetag?

Price tag is 13k which feels a little high but prices on these things seem to be all over the place so I don’t really know. Rest of the truck looks nice, imperial jade (my favorite) DC 4wd and it has a leer shell.

Rear Axle has some bubbles and looks to be freshly painted over to hide those. Diff Cover Rust is a big problem to fix if it starts springing on you. The drive shaft is looking crusty along with many important bolts/nuts that will need servicing soon if this were a long term investment for you. The rocker panels and under body of the cab seem to be bubbling as well.

I’d pass on this one unless the price was $4-5k. You’ve got lots of work to do on that thing.

Doesn’t it look like the backing plate of the driver brake drum.......is pretty much flaked away?

the unpainted bolts look like an indicator of other rust that painted over.

On my 06, there was far less rust and I live in VA. From my experience, the bolts on the undercarriage are almost all armor coat and don't rust as fast as zinc coated bolts. Those pictured bolts look bad. It boggles my mind why Toyota would replace an entire frame and not replace obvious visually worn out hardware. Replacing a frame is a huge undertaking.

I'd stay away. If those bolts are that bad, so are ALL the others. That would be a bitch to work on. Be patient and try to find a cleaner one, or one from the south.

Yes they are. They're supposed to be round. So that's a bunch of junk getting into the rear drums.

I’m located in Texas, there just hasn’t been what I’m looking for locally unless it’s pushing 200k+ and priced about 10k

What part of TX? There's no worries with 200k+ on these trucks.

    Pass.

Even the rattlecan overspray on the shock is evidence enough that they are hiding as much as they can. I traded my Limited DC 06', clean as a whistle, 150k, every service record, every oil change, rotation, and anything else that truck did that can get a document, for $14k back in 2017. It was sold before I handed the keys over. Just saying a truck in excellent condition would still be less than what you're looking at.

Amarillo. Austin is a good place to be. There's quite a few bick cities a few hours away to widen your search.

Thanks! It’s mostly de-baged, but it’s got a v8, it’s 197k miles, and I paid about 10 for it, a little more miles and price then I wanted but it seems to have been taken care of really well.
Popped the timing belt cover open for a peak, and, being a 60 series guy, I’m not too familiar with them, but to me it doesn’t look in dire needs of replacement, what do y’all think?9B564E12-699C-4FA8-9D44-DC1A93A24DBF.jpg

Correct, the wheels are from a newer Tacoma, I like the look of them. Not sure about the head lamps but the blinkers look after market to me.
Yea I’m about 20 mins outside of Austin and try to avoid the city at all cost

We never had shootings and under bridge villages. But Adler allows it and has defunded Austin Police Dept.

Driving around Lamar and Menchaca is depressing, the homeless villages have taken over. I haven’t been in actual down town in years
