I'm going on 24 years and inching ever so close to retirement. Curious what some of you did after you retired or what you plan (want) to do when you retire.

    Let's hear it....!

Most go into executive protection or private security (management side)

Others drive tour buses where the elderly are happy to see you lol

I'm leaning towards detailing cars and maybe doing some woodworking on the side lol

This happens for me in May.

Short put: I am going to do something that I WANT to do for a change.

    That'll be mind-boggling.

We own a small business too that is going gang-busters, so I'll still have work, but ... you know, when you're working at home 4 days a week and doing inspections [which isn't real work in my mind] one day a week ... it ain't too bad. [Ain't bad at all, actually.:D]

Mostly, just live each moment. DRIVE THE TUNDRA MORE on weekend trips and stuff.

    Shoot my guns more.

Be a freaking HUMAN BEING for a change [slow down and live in the moment]: maybe even, be nice to people.:monocle:

    That's the plan.

    I hear freedom is intoxicating.

I have a retired friend who is constantly preaching to me about the joys of unstructured time.

I retired young. Did nothing for awhile, helped friends w/ their projects randomly, did some of my own projects. Got bored.
When you're the first to retire - no one else is ever free to play, to travel, …. I found myself starting to spend time with people 20 years my senior, nice people / good friends, but I wanted to be more active than they.

Still a little bored & feeling left out of the wheels of commerce & society, I decided to get some sort of a job.

Ended up signing on w/ a temp agency. My second gig became a job - they hired me for 3 hours a night.
Still a little bored I picked up a p/t job for 3 hours in the morning.
That was good get up, 2 hour breakfast, putz about, go to work, putz about for a couple of hours, go to other work, go home & stay up too late.
This was all good by me. But both companies have grown phenomenally & I'm working 13 hour days M-F plus 3-5 hours Sat.

So, I guess you could say retirement didn't really agree with me.
But - it's so much easier to enjoy a job you don't need.
...and I'll qualify to retire from 1 of those jobs in 9 more months!

This will be me. Only 28 but can retire at 41. Will probably do the extra 4 years for another step in pay and sell my leave to cap out my retirement %age. Then I have no idea what I'm going to do. ADHD off the wall.

I'm so torn on this. I can retire in 4.5 years, at 50 with 80% of my current pay. Every year after this I get 2.5% more per year towards my percentage.

I can't leave until my kids get out of HS, due to an agreement with my queen, so that's an additional 5 years after I retire. Guess I could do local landscaping or do stuff on my property to ready for sale as soon as I can.

For me, I really don't want to retire to just go work at something else.

I retired (forced) after 24 years due to line of duty injuries. I wanted to stay. So now I just do whatever I want, I do miss the job.

We have a 6 month old and another on the way so I'll be in the same boat. Do another 4 plus or minus a few months (capped at 85%) and theyll be out of high school. Wife and her family own several franchise tutoring companies so shes the breadwinner technically. Got me a sugar mama so I can technically f off and not do anything lol.

I trade stock options as a "hobby" and honestly think that's what I'll continue to do into retirement. Fairly successful with it so why not lol

Best two days of boat ownership: the day you buy and the day you sell. I grew up on the river on a small jet boat and a larger center console fishing rig. They're pains in the asses.

I have heard that saying, kinda like campers I guess.

If you use them a lot, probably worth it. Some of the places I have been looking at, that's how you get around is by boat.

That's funny, we call y'all's terrain the same thing. I've wheeled Harlan KY a couple times with some west coast crazys. Honestly, they couldn't wheel worth a shit here, lol. It is definitely different out here, takes getting use to for the newbies.

Oh I can totally see that happening. Different terrain, setups, driving styles, etc.

Did you hear Josh is selling his buggy? Getting out of it.

Yeah, I talked to him about 6 months ago. Said he was going to sell it and maybe get/build a streetable rig. If I didn't rz swap my rig, I would have tried to get his turboed 22re.

I couldn't believe it either. A V-6 and auto would have made this rear steer rig unstoppable for sure.

At one point he was getting info from me on doing a 3rz and auto swap, then he said that combo was going to be too long, so then he bought a supercharged 3.8.

I've got 18-months until I punch out. I'll be 56 and don't really want to do another job. Fortunately we are in a position that I don't have to go back to work, but I do worry about filling that gap that work provides. I've thought about being on a couple of corporate boards and I've thought about teaching a couple college courses. I do have plenty of hobbies...but I'm not sure the hobbies will fill the void where you get a sense of self worth from what you do in your job.

I retire the end of next summer from being chained to a desk as a telecommuter. Plans are:

More kayaking/hiking. That is why the truck is getting spiffed up and getting bed racks. We want to be freed from our trailer and go exploring.

Vegetable gardening. Right now we have a nice raised bed garden and would like to volunteer to help folks learn how to grow their own foood. DH wants to learn some woodworking.

Search and Rescue team - once my dogs age out in about 4 - 6 years, I will still help folks on the team train by hiding in the woods for them and serving at searches running the team computer/mapping.

Job? My husband has his own business selling automotive body clips and fasteners so I may help him with his paperwork and inventory. He wants to keep his best customers and scale down to a few days a week.

Kids/Grandkids / Family. Hahaha "death planning" I intend to live to 104 (hey its a vision) and we need to cut out the clutter and simplify.

Very excited about this. I would be retired now if it was not for concerns about health insurance availability down the road.

Pics of DH seeing if we can get the kayak on the roof. Not too hard but a roof rack on the cab won't carry the weight of two 14' 85# kayaks happily, especially on rough dirt roads, and the high top camper not a good option. We gave away the shell to a Mexican guy who is delighted with it and the open bed will be more useful. Other is us and the grandkids kind of scruffy looking but it was a cold day and I had on several layers.

This post made me miss the 80's. When you could change cars every couple of months if you wanted because they were so cheap. I loved my Monte Carlo. Hood so long you could land a plane on it. I bought it for $500 had it for a year when someone bounced off it in a Celica. The insurance totaled it over creased rear fender and cut me check for $700.

My dad bought a Chrysler Cordoba in that same color in the 70's. We called it baby barf.
