Was Great Escape good? I wasn't impressed with some of Steve McQueen's other movies.

It's excellent, one of the greats imho. McQueen is more of a supporting role than the primary character. He has another movie of the same genre made a couple years later called The Sand Pebbles which was also pretty good.

McQueen was kind of hit and miss. The Great Escape, The Sand Pebbles, The Magnificent Seven and Bullitt were really his best movies.

I forgot about The Magnificent Seven. That was a good one. The car chase in Bullitt is great but the rest of the movie is kind of lacking. Bullitt is no Dirty Harry or Steve McGarrett.

You're right there. Dirty Harry is in a class of it's own when it comes to cop movies.

I found out the other day that the Big Red One was re-edited with some 40 minutes of footage restored.

Victory in the air was the key to winning the Cold War. Despite billions of dollars spent by the USAF and NATO on the best planes, the most advanced radar systems and missiles, and the finest pilot training, the outcome may have been decided by a little boot company in West Germany.
