Who knows. Compared to the Ramones or black flag, dK’s? Those are true punk in my
Book. But greenday was also labeled punk and I never agreed.
Sum41 was such a fun band. Hope those kids didn’t drink themselves to death.

Agreed. Green Day and The Offspring aren't punk in my opinion. At least Sum 41 (and Blink 182 to a lesser extent) had that punk attitude.

I totally agree. HAHA yeah there's definitely a different opinion on labels right?
Punk-to me- was BF, Rollins, Fugazi, Misfits, Suicidal Tenedencies...
But now I think a lot of stuff gets thrown in that category, but I think it's more of an alt rock sound , whatever that is, like (RISE AGAIBNST, AFI, Bad religion, Billy Talent) or even top 40's pop sometimes like Off spring / Greenday, IMHO.
But, I threw on "Hot Country" on Spotify at work for the crew the other day and most of the songs were the same ones I've heard on my wife's top pop hit's and some of the kids rap XM stations. It definitely wasn't the Dwight Yoakum, Clint Black, Randy Travis style of country that was popular when I was in HS. I think MY categories were set when I was growing up and haven't changed.

Classic Rock, which was just "Rock" and was "that crap my dad listened to" and I really liked but wouldn't admit it.
Rock- The stuff my dad hated. GNR, Tesla
Metal- The stuff my Dad really hated. Metallica-esque stuff
Rap- The stuff I listened to when I felt like pushing him to his limits.
Country- The stuff I listened to when "cruising" was still a thing and was a good angle for girls - against the booming 15's, Bel Biv Devoe and vibrating license plates.

Everything else had to fit in there somewhere because I didn't know what it was.

That weird stuff that those kids have dance-offs to.
That weird stuff those kids with the black lipstick listen to.
That weird rock but now they have leather, spandex, and lipstick.
That annoying stuff on Kasey Kasem's top 40 or anything resembling Jan Hammer Miami Vice sound.

For punk, I pretty much only like The Ramones, a couple Clash albums and a bit of Dead Kennedys.
Listen to a bit of post-punk/no wave, though.
Country: primarily Johnny Cash and Jay Munly
Been really getting into bluegrass lately but don't know that many artists
Classic rock: tons of stuff but not much from the 80s (e.g. glam)
Modern rock: mostly 90s stuff but not much grunge - this is also where I would include Sum 41 and those type of bands
Metal: how much time do you have?
Hip hop: pretty much just MF DOOM and Aesop Rock. I used to like Eminem but I've outgrown his early stuff and his last couple albums are shit.
And maybe the occasional pop song from Coldplay or someone like that that my wife makes me listen to.

I always get in arguments with people because a lot of what is classified as "alternative" sounds like all the other mainstream modern rock and pop to me. They don't appreciate me telling them to listen to something that actually meets the definition of the word alternative like Swans (post punk/ no wave/ sludge) or some obscure metal subgenres.

    Pretty much spot on.
FWIW, I was mountain biking out in Quincy, CA and stopped at the brewery for some food and beer. They had pretty awesome bluegrass going on and I asked the server what it was. She told me it's Spotify "Bluegrass covers" I found it and now I'm hooked. It's BlueGrass but songs I actually know, lol.

I like 'older' Green Day and The Offspring, seen them both a few times.
I'd call them more POP Punk than punk rock..
I would also consider Sum 41 and Blink 182 pop punk as well...

But whatever you want to call it, I love it..

One more post since y'all got me fired up on pop punk.
The kids (now 30 and 26) and I have seen The Offspring 4 times over the last 15 years..

They have NEVER disappointed, and I'll never turn one of their songs off it pops up on XM or an iPhone shuffle.
They made some pretty good and funny videos too....
