what's your experience with January temps in the park? ABF average is a low of 40, but that is taken at their headquarters in Borrego Springs where the elevation is about 600. Fish Creek is in the 1500s, Blair Valley is about 2500. I want to head out the weekend of Jan 21 for the new moon & dark sky, but I don't think my kids & wife are down with 20-30 degree temps. Hard to find good averages throughout the park online.

Anyone interested in an Anza Borrego run between Christmas and new years? I'm off those days and it isn't 150 degrees so I figure it's a good time

Ah, I'm very familiar with the whole area, I'm usually out there every couple of weeks. The statues are awesome for sure.

The weather was great with no wind, just a bit chilly at night. Did a night run all the way up Split Mountain/ Fish Creek to the bottom of Heart Attack Hill.

Im looking forward to finally getting out there. Was thinking to get a motel for a night and staying out until dark for the stars, then heading back home the next day. Any cheap motels in the immediate area?

Yeah it's a great place to visit, you can drive for days without crossing your old tracks. Full moons are just as special as no moon because you can see so much when you're away from artificial light.

There are some hotels and rentals in Borrego Springs but I've never stayed. No chain motels, chain stores, or anything like that though.

Pretty much any wash. There's very little in the vicinity I would classify as difficult. San Felipe Wash, Palo Verde Wash, Fish Creek are good for beginners. Old Borrego Valley Road is a nice trail when the Ocotillos are blooming.

The south end of the park has some nice big washes too but they're farther from Borrego Springs. Arroyo Seco Diablo mud caves, Canyon Sin Nombre, etc.

These two maps are very and they have them at the park headquarters.
In the state park you have to stay on marked trails, inside Ocotillo Wells you can drive anywhere you want pretty much (with some limitations).

I generally wheel with extra gas. I'd say be smart and bring two gallons just to play it safe. Gas prices in Borrego are meh. Salton City (northeast point of Ocotillo Wells) has a Chevron $$$. About 10-15 miles north of Salton City there is a casino with reasonable gas prices, if you're in OW with a mostly empty tank it's worth the drive to go fill up.

They don't sell gas at all along the 78 anymore.

If you're in the very south part of the park, there's some gas stations near the 8.

I’m heading out Sat Jan 21 for the new moon. I’ve read that Blair Valley is the darkest part of the park. I was there for the full moon in October, it was incredible. This photo was taken around 11PM

Lots going on right now through end of December. Apr 22-23 is a weekend…

    Lyrids
Next period of activity: April 15th, 2023 to April 29th, 2023
The Lyrids are a medium strength shower that usually produces good rates for three nights centered on the maximum. These meteors also usually lack persistent trains but can produce fireballs. These meteors are best seen from the northern hemisphere where the radiant is high in the sky at dawn. Activity from this shower can be seen from the southern hemisphere, but at a lower rate.

    Shower details - Radiant: 18:10 +33.3° - ZHR: 18 -Velocity: 29 miles/sec (medium - 46.8km/sec) - Parent Object: C/1861 G1 (Thatcher)

Next Peak - The Lyrids will next peak on the Apr 22-23, 2023 night. On this night, the moon will be 9% full.
