More of us would jump on this, if we do. I’ve already got what-if side texts flying back and forth.

You in if it happens? Bbq, beer, then after you’ve watched others, you’ll try it yourself? #rules

Has any one had the dash board light up like a Christmas tree and also the trailer parking error stating to pull over immediately? I turned off the truck and started it back up and everything went away.

im wondering does that throw a code that’s probably stored in the computer? Drove it and everything was fine. But had me worried at first.

It happened to me once on my way home from San Diego. I did the same thing. Pulled over, turned off the truck, waited a few minutes and restarted. It has not happened since.

I was just starting the truck. It does sit for weeks at a time and some one else mentioned my battery. Gotta keep an eye out and put a trickle charger make sure it’s good

The battery is a possibility. My truck also
sits for a week or so at a time. Hopefully you get lucky and it never happens again. If is does, at least you know how to deal with the issue. I have heard a bunch of crazy reasons why this may happen. Everything from the TSS sensor being dirty, battery, to just a random quirk. :notsure:

Mine doesn’t have all those sensors. It’s a 2017 SR5 lol but yes hopefully it doesn’t happen again. Still has a couple years of warranty but we will see

Anyone got a recommendation for a communication system? New to off-roading but want to be able to communicate with other people when on the trails. I’m pretty new to the scene so trying to figure out what everyone using

Ham radios are the most common way to communicate on the trail.

Most run a simple radio like this -
    https://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-UV-5...5r&qid=1657925298&sprefix=bao,aps,1216&sr=8-4

But it has very short range.

There are radios that are a bit bigger and better while remaining handheld, but most commonly for an upgrade in quality and longer range reception you’d be looking into a “hard mounted” radio. Like this one -
    https://www.amazon.com/Icom-Original-IC-2730A-Amateur-Transceiver/dp/B00QOR05EY?crid=2SF08JCOT7MB0&keywords=kenwood+ham+radio&qid=1657925456&sprefix=kenwood+ham%2Caps%2C374&sr=8-8

@shawn3210 the Baofeng that @eccracer104 linked above is adequate for most. We usually off-road in groups and it works just fine. You can always upgrade down the road if needed.

*Legal Disclosure - Use of a HAM radio without a license is prohibited and can result in a fine of $10,000

That being said, using a low wattage radio while moving on a "trail" is going to be nearly impossible to bust. Someone would have to be within range to hear you, have the directional radio antenna to track you, care enough to find you AND be able to go fast enough to catch up to you.

On the flip side, getting a license is pretty damn easy. Find a free "cram" course near you, sit there for a few hours to learn, take a few practice tests online, take a REAL test for $15 (and pass) and you are completely legit.

Once one upgrades, the little uv5r works great as a loaner too

    True that!

For what it’s worth I’m 99% sure un-licensed can use MURS channels without issue. Oh and not using repeaters. Lol.

    That is correct...
"MURS is licensed by rule. This means an individual license is not required for an entity to operate a MURS transmitter if it is not a representative of a foreign government and if it uses the transmitter in accordance with the MURS rules outlined in 47 C.F.R. Part 95 Subpart J. There is no age restriction regarding who may operate an MURS transmitter"

PM me if you want company. It’s been on my To Do list too long already. And it’s too hot to off-road the next couple of months anyway….

Hmmn, who else has been ‘meaning to’…? @nishibot did you do this yet? Let’s hang out and get it done with Shawn.*

*Shawn wonders how the hell this turned into a SoCal Shenanigans meet event.

Where in SoCal are you? I might sell you a water port I never used for what I paid for it 3 years ago (I’m sure it’s way less than they go for now) and deliver it to you at the class you research and find so I don’t have to. Lol!

There are 2 classes. One is ham operator and the other is… something else. But we’re randomly talking about radio licensing, so @DividedSky will likely mosey through here with the answer we need.

    3 classes actually...
"The Federal Communications Commission licenses new hams in one of three classes: Technician, General and Extra. The Technician class is entry level, while General is the next step up. As you can guess, the Extra class license is the top shelf!"

For the general stuff we do, all you need is the Technician class.
The only benefit (as I see it) of using one of the higher classes is the ability to send out data messages (emails and such) via radio. Or if you want to talk to someone in Australia, China, South Africa etc.
