Yeah, there's no incentive for insurance to cover it, as they aren't paying for the rental...

I know the feeling. On month 4 waiting on parts for my Tundra.

All because someone decided to cut across 2 lanes in front of me. I bet shes already in a new car like nothing happened while I'm still here without my truck.

I'm not replacing mine. CEL is staying on after welding in a straight pipe. No emissions tests here and saving the whales is not in the budget for the foreseeable future.

I'm sure every truck has similar amounts of precious metals in their cats.

Manufacturing extras of any part but especially one that's expensive is so far against Toyota's philosophy and lean manufacturing in general, not to mention that it's a good way to tie up a huge amount of cash hoping that thieves will strike your customers.

I have heard that Toyotas do have more precious metals. Not sure that is true. If it is not then why do thieves go to the trouble to jack up Prius'. I have also heard Tundras have 4 cats versus others that have 2.

Toyota definitely should’ve modified the 2020 or 2021 catalytic converter location. Thieves have been targeting the 2/2.5 Gen since 2018. Instead Toyota was focused on building cheaper (removing the trans cooler) and designing the 2022.

    Pretty things
Cat theft obviously sucks, but I still probably prefer not to roast my suspension components with these things. As stated, cat theft didn't really become a thing till the end of this platform's life, and the location of the cats is probably superior in every OTHER way.

Also don't see how one can be upset with a manufacturer for not drastically changing the design of a platform being replaced in a short couple years.

Where did they place the cats on the 3rd gen? I don't know. Hopefully they chose to make things more difficult for thieves, knowing now that it's a growing trend.

Why is your body shop paying for your rental?
Don't assume their insurance is paying your rental fees, why would they?
    You need to find out.

My insurance has a cap of $1200 per claim for rental, which was about a month.
Toyota paid for 7 months of the 8 months I had a dealer rental/loaner.
That totaled up to over $8K, after the $1200 my insurance paid, which I'm sure they just wrote off.
I guess I was fortunate to have a good dealership, but I'm certainly no VIP client...
It took 8 months and 5 days to get my truck back from the dealership.

But I'll tell you this, the one and probably the main reason Toyota paid for my rental is that THEY ARE THE ONES REPAIRING THE VEHICLE.
It is my understanding that other dealerships are not offering that, but mine did..

When I dropped my truck off in November they told me 6 to 8 weeks and they had 6 Tundras there already.
When I picked up my truck in July, 8 months later, they had over 40 Tundras and Sequoias, as well as who knows how many Prius, and Toyota paid for rentals for all of them.

Why does Toyota need to warn owners of cat theft?
Does your homebuilder warn you of burglaries?
Is Toyota supposed to project how many cats would be stolen in a given time?
Is your head so far up in the clouds you aren't aware of what is going on around you?
This has been a topic of conversation for YEARS, but the massive increase in thefts has been over the last 12 to 18 months..
How do you expect Toyota to pull thousands of extra cats out of their ass at the tail end of a massive unneeded shut-down of the entire earth?
Material shortages, transportation shortages, personnel shortages, etc..

My cats were stolen in November of 2021 in my employer's parking lot.
    Did my employer take responsibility?
No, they didn't, they say its a public parking lot so they have no responsibility for what happens there.
    Should I sue my employer?
Should I sue the city that allegedly owns the parking lot property?

I put off buying shields when I saw them being made.
I thought I probably should get some, but no, that won't happen to me.
But you can be sure I had a set of Vahalla shields in the garage and installed them within the first 10 minutes I had the truck home.
I'd hope you've already researched this and ordered yours.

I get it you're frustrated, and so was I.
I called service managers, dealership managers, dealership owners, and corporate Toyota but they can't deliver what they don't have.
I was fortunate to have my rental paid for, that was pretty much my only saving grace.
But I never once considered suing Toyota over it.
Maybe if I would have been responsible for my own transportation for 8 months I'd feel differently about it.
But I wasn't, and it seems neither are you.

Do you want to sue someone over your loss?
Sue the judges that let criminals go with no bail.
Sue the DAs that let people go with the slap of the hand.
Sue the government that shut the country down.
They are more responsible for this than Toyota..

You need to be sure who is covering your rental fees so you don't have a big surprise waiting for you when your truck is fixed and you pick it up.
Every time I checked on my truck for 8 months I asked my service guy about it, he said they had it covered.
    Good luck to you..

As stated by my service advisor:
Prius has the most precious metals in their cats.
That's why they are the most stolen.

As to the Tundra 4 cats:
The fronts have a lot more precious metals in them than the rears, but thieves don't know that.

They left the driver's side of mine hanging on the rubber hanger when they stole mine.
I tried to sell them after I got my truck back, but kept getting lowballed, probably criminals trying to buy them.
I ended up sending them to an online recycler and they paid to ship.
I got more from them than the lowballers on social media marketing sites.
I've got better things to do than meet strangers for a few bucks anyway.
I also just wanted them out of my garage.

    I had a TF4 front and an X62 rear.
The rear was only 14% of the value of the front.
They paid me $250, the lower ballers were offering less than $200.
I was only asking $400, I just wanted someone to be able to use them.

Not a single local scrap yard or recycler would buy them.
Texas laws are now such a PITA, they won't want to deal with it.

I still don't understand why anyone is getting their rental fees covered by anyone other than their own insurance companies. (No offense.)

    No offense taken.

Because most auto insurance company policies have a rental cap per claim.
Mine is $1200, which lasted about 32.5 days (@ $40 per day) of the 8 months I had a rental.
I guess they figure 30 days should be long enough to repair a vehicle.

If anyone isn't sure if their policy has a rental cap on it, I'd certainly look into it.

So Toyota paid for your rental out of the goodness of their hearts? That was really nice of them but I don't think they have any obligation to do so.

No, they don't, but they did.
    I never asked for it.
The whole time my truck was in the shop my SA told me they would cover it.
He told me it wasn't my fault they couldn't get the parts in.
They had me in a 2021 Tacoma.
So either the dealership paid for it, which I can't see happening based on the number of vehicles, or Toyota paid for it.
    I didn't ask..

I guess I'm special, as are any other customer that had my dealership replace their stolen cats....

So many questions! ;) Body shop pays for the rental as the theft occurred in their locked compound, after my insurance rental coverage max. is reached. I'm in Canada, so laws are slightly different up here.

The rental is covered by them. In writing.

Yes, my cat covers are sitting at home. They were ordered in January before my truck got hit, and arrived a week after.

No, I'm not suing them. I've got better s#!t to do... It was a hypothetical question, and one which one of our US corporate legal leads suggests may have merit. Could it be an option for others? Perhaps.

No clue about your situation with the dealership, could be they consider you a VIP, or a squeaky wheel. Or they could just be a great dealer.

    Bottom line:

    1) I'm jealous because you've received yours.
    2) We are both lucky to have been covered for a rental.

    I understand now.
Sorry I missed the being stolen on their lot.

My dealership has had them stolen off their lot on new vehicles..

I would hope it wouldn't take as long to get yours as it did mine...
    Hopefully, production is picking up.

They had my passenger side in December.
The wait was for the driver's side..

I was pretty passive about most of the wait.
I would drive up and visit my truck once a month.
I felt fortunate to have something to drive that had a bed.
Even if was a Tonka toy with a lawnmower engine in it.
At least I was getting better than the 11 MPG I get in my Tundra when the prices were at a peak.
But getting into the 7th month I started making more useless phone calls and emails.

My wife was more pissed off than I was.
    I'm not sure why.
She works for a bougie law firm in Dallas and was about to start writing some letters.

I hope you get it back soon..

Glad to hear of someone else visiting their truck while it was away... Was beginning to feel a bit pathetic turning up every few weeks to touch and appreciate it.

You're right about the better gas mileage though. I don't even mind driving the Tahoe in the city, and on the highway, it's a rocket; so much so that I got a speeding ticket for the first time in my life! It's not an off road vehicle though. I got into some sketchy situations up north earlier this summer scouting for moose.

The main reason I would 'visit' is that they said they would jump-start the truck and moved it every 2 or 3 weeks.
I didn't believe them, but every time I went up it was in a different spot...

The battery died around the end of the year.
My drone mobile app would warn of a low battery and it finally stopped responding.

Toyota also gave me a new 84-month TruStart at no charge..
I gave my 27F Interstate battery away to someone that needed it..
