*VIDEO* Ticking Noise - Timing Chain Tensioner?

I just had the same issue noise was worse when cold it ended up being the timing chain tensioners, timing gears and chain thank god for the extended warranty I bought, it just paid for itself

 

Did the dealer give you any flak about it saying that its not a big deal and you dont need to fix it or anything like that? I am considering an extended warranty for this issue and the cam tower leak issue.

 

The first time I brought it in they couldn't figure out what it was, the noise got a lot worse and I have a friend that is a service writer for the dealership and he was a big help in making sure they fixed it, they are aware of the issue the engineers also like you to take a video so you can show them they confirmed the issue with the video but they covered everything with the platinum warranty except for the diagnostic which we should not have to pay especially when they know the issue is there. its always the drivers side bank 1 is what I was told

 

Thank you for this thread. I have the same issue on my 14 Tundra with 207k miles. Mine has a bit more a tin can rattle as well. No one has been able to figure it out till the most recent mechanic. Althought the tensioner was never mentioned. This mechanic says replacing my timing chain is redundant on a 200k mile engine because Its an expensive job and my engine may need replacing shortly after. My engine seems to run strong and should be able to get at least another 100k if not more out of her. Thoughts??

 

These engine can go to 500k+ with regular maintenance

 

I would say go for it these engine do go many miles

 

Watching this thread to see if anyone ever experiences catastrophic failure as a result of tensioner and if there are indicators prior. My 2015 Tundra has 211k miles and has been clicking for at least 75k. Seems to get a little better after oil change but never fully goes away. Can be pretty loud on cold start and wife says it sounds like shit but I just tell her to shut up and get in (kidding. Hahaha). I won’t spend the $4200….confident she’ll hold together until we hit the 10 year mark.

 

just curious what difference you see between 5w-20 and 0w-20 at operating temperature?


Ive tried 5w-30 AND 5w-20 and both are quieter than 0w-20
