This. I have a CPO 2014 w/ now 95k on the clock. Had 40k when I bought 3 years ago. It was worth it to me.
i don’t think it’s worth it in your case. Despite the low miles which is awesome, your CPO will run out of years before it ever runs out of miles (unless you daily 100 mi or more) as the first owner likely purchased in 2015. it’s a Toyota. 100k is just getting broken in.

like others have said. Go sit in and drive both. See what you like. The 38gal tank would be enough to seal it for me (will cost you $2k to upgrade the 2016 tank anyway). I’d look at nada/ blue book value on the 18, and go in offer as close to asking as your comfortable and see if they’ll throw in a warranty similar to the CPO.

    Good luck.

I'll have to wait and see. Thank you for the help and info! Unfortunately the 2018 has a 26.4 gal tank too. According to the dealers site

Double check the tank in person. Usually they just have the intern put standard features on their website without checking.

I’d be leaning towards the 2018 myself. You can always buy a Toyota extended warranty from the person on this site that sells them. Also, doesn’t the 2018 not qualify for the dealer to CPO it or something?

I am not too familiar with the CPO program. What dictates if a vehicle qualifies anyway? Anyone?

It has to pass the 160 point inspection and it has to have a clean Carfax. Other than the CarFax, I cant see any reason the dealer wouldn’t certify the 2018 since it’s still under the manufacturer warranty.

They probably certified the 2016 so they can try to get more $$ out of it. But $2,000 less for a vehicle that’s 2 years older? Seems crazy to me. I’d do your homework, know the going rate for these trucks, compare the prices you can negotiate down to to what you’d pay for a brand new SR5 and don’t fall in love with either one of these trucks. Take your time. Plus, remember it’s the end of the month AND the end of the last quarter of the year for the dealer... they’ll be motivated to sell a truck. Go home at least once without signing anything and let them chase you. Also, have you gotten a quote from Vroom and Carvana for your trade? I would get a quote from both before going there today. All you need is your vin number... enter it in to their website... and they give you a quote. Compare that price to the dealer trade in number. Takes less than 5 minutes.

Does the dealer have the truck listed of their website? Most have a free Carfax check link for every used vehicle. I’d check that. It’d be a red flag if they wouldn’t CPO it, yes, because at 25K miles there should be no reason it wouldn’t pass the inspection. It isn’t that big a deal.

I just did the carvana. Surprisingly toyota offered me more for my trade in value/equity than what the website calculated.

Carvana stinks on trade-in. I have looked up several cars and they were 4k+ low.

    Good luck!

    I try to sell privately.

I know that can be a hassle & understand trading in is simpler but because they have to profit you leave money on the table. It's a trade off of convenience vs money.

Try vroom as well. There can be a difference between the two. I just threw my 2018 4Runner (12,000 miles) in to Vroom and they offered me $32,000... which would be a great starting point for me to negotiate with a dealer. On top of that, in NYS at least, I only pay tax on the difference between the new car and trade in... so the dealer has some room to play and it’s still worth it to trade. You might find that the dealer is less willing to negotiate the price of the truck you’re buying if they’re all in on the trade.

in NY at least, the dealers have the upper hand on late model trades. Say my 4 Runner trade is worth $30,000.. our tax rate is 8%... so right off the bat I’m “saving” $2400 in tax by trading to the dealer vs a private party sale. And if you have a lien, as you do, that turns a lot of buyers away because of the risk.

Same here. I'm "saving" if I trade and I only pay taxes on the difference

Test drove both. The 2018 appeals me more. No unusual sounds, no big damages, a few scuffs and scratches but nothing major. 2018 does have hail damage but cant see it. That's why it wasnt certified as what they say

Also the 2018 has wind noise from driver door when at high speeds. They said they'd adjust it which they did but still hear some wind

No reputable dealer is putting a hail damaged truck on their used car lot - those go to the auction or are sold out the back door wholesale to a small independent dealer to flip to folks with bad credit. IMO anyway. I wouldn’t even look at another truck there. Form what they’re asking, you should be able to get something perfect.

IMO - and I’m not you. But I wouldn’t pay anywhere near that for a 4 year old truck. CPO or not. If you can swing it, I’d be trying to steal a brand new one given it’s the end of the month and the end of the final quarter for dealers. Send a bunch of emails out and tell them you’re willing to do the deal before 12/31 and see what dealers throw back at you. Your Tacoma trade works in your favor too... they’re going to make a couple thousand easy on that.

I vote for the 2018. The bigger tank and LED headlights are worth it in place of the CPO. The mileage doesn't bother me at all.

What’s the resale on a truck with hail damage once you drive it off the lot? It’s gotta be on the Carfax. A reputable dealer wouldn’t even take that in on trade. A regular old accident that shows up on Carfax drags the value down 15% or so. Hail damage? Ugh. I gotta imagine 20%.

They used Experian. On the report which I have in hand says "no hail brand" maybe haild damage wasnt significant enough to claim?

Red flag after red flag. Are you assuming the whole truck is repainted? I am. Would you know what to look for if it was? There are too many good trucks and honest dealers out there to deal with a place like this. I’d have walked away as soon as they told me they kept a hail damaged vehicle on their lot. Not a single reputable dealer would do that. Not one. Run man. Run.
