I have the TT Upland G3 which is the last collar built by Tritronics before Garmin bought them.

Its finally getting old and unreliable after 6 years of steady use so I checked out one of the new Garmin units at Sportsman's Warehouse last year. I'll have to say that I'm not impressed with the "improvements" Garmin made to the remotes.

I can't imagine that they will be very easy to use with gloved hands. They also removed the positive click for each level on the intensity selector knob. Now you have to look at the remote when you adjust intensity to make sure you don't burn your dog by unintentionally applying a higher setting that you wanted.

You're all making me jealous. My first Upland season since moving to Massachusetts just opened today and it closes in 5 weeks. There's a 6 BIRD ANNUAL LIMIT on Pheasants and all of them are release birds. I guess I'll be hunting out of state in the west as soon as I can afford to travel again.

I also bought a new Mud River seat cover this year because the one I bought for my Tacoma isn't wide enough to cover the rear seat in Tundras.

I've used the original one hard for 7 years and it has no rips. I had the new one 2 weeks and the dogs ripped a huge hole in it. It turns out that Mud River was bought by Boyt recently. The two seat covers look identical except for size, but on closer inspection the new one has much thinner fabric. The Mud River brand has totally lost my trust at this point.

I can't say that I blame any business owner for selling when a big corporation offers them a load of cash, but it sure does make it hard to find replacement gear when the good stuff finally wears out and there's no one making it like that anymore.

I'll stop my moaning now. You may all resume your previous discussion.

The new garmin units are not even close in terms of ergonomics, ruggedness and costumer service is not even close to what it was in Tucson with Tritronics. Fortunately I have two upland specials. I have been buying whatever parts I can find on eBay to stock up. That being said I still think they are the best units.

I’m really excited about learning how to hunt birds in Oregon. I was raised in AZ, other than ducks and a couple geese I’ve only been on quail and dove. I tried to find turkey and grouse a few times without success. Most of my shooting has been with a side xside 20g Ithaca i bought for 150$ at jensons in Tucson 45 years ago. I got good enough to learn to “switch hit” left or right shoulder, and usually limit on less than a box.
    Here’s my current rig:

    I’m loving the decked drawers!

Please thank your son for his service for us. We can't do that enough in my opinion.

I'm planning on building my own bed storage drawers, but I just moved and now I can't find anywhere that supplies baltic birch plywood. It's much higher grade, stronger and more rigid than regular plywood for the same thickness and weight.

Now I see a used decked system for the crewmax on Craigslist for $600. Maybe I'll buy that and use it until I get around to building exactly what I want.

How sturdy are the drawers? Should I be worried about someone trying to offload an abused and wornout decked unit?

Drawers and the system are quite sturdy but I would not buy it “sight unseen”.
If a drawer was over loaded and he has been jumping the truck or hitting miles of washboard, there’s possibly damage. Check the rollers, the guides, and the bottom of the drawers.
I’m very happy with the setup and have zero regrets.

Chasing pheasant in North Dakota. I hauled an empty trailer from New Orleans so we could move around with all the dogs. Our group is 20 strong from all over the country.

    Where in ND?

I lived there for 4 years. I mostly hunted huns and sharpies around Grand Forks, but I also spent some time hunting North of Bismarck and near Fort Ransom when I was looking for pheasants.

Sweet setup. I can see you have great taste.7ca585320bd2f05b1f9c1aaf9d55e82a_6bd9fc16c350d2b51e1d69cbb6293ea1637f69cb.jpg

So I've been going through a truely torturous process of getting everything squared away to legally hunt in Massachusetts since I moved here this summer.

They made me pay for a non-resident small game license because I've been here less than a year. (Aparently it's okay for them to demand that I am a resident when it means I pay them for something and it's also okay for them to consider me a non-resident if it means that I pay more for something else than I would as a resident.)

Mass Upland season has now closed and I still don't have a rediculous firearms license so I can legally exercise my 2nd Ammendment rights.

I've had a hunter safety card for 23 years now. The firearm safety course they made me take was so basic I could have taught it in the 4th grade, yet they decided that I'm the type of person they need to hassle about gun ownership.

In order to actually hunt this year I had just abandon the whole Massachusetts track altogether even though I already bought the hunting license and just take the out-of-state option.

I'm finally going to New Hampshire for Ruffed Grouse this Saturday. The dog and I will just have to figure it out ourselves since no one I've talk to in the rediculous State (wait.. ...Common Wealth) has any interest in upland hunting.

Wish me luck. Hopefully I don't get lost in the forest.

I'm sorry to hear you are having such trouble getting out in the field this year. You are welcome back in Washington anytime!

Hunted my griff 4 times so far this year. Shes my first hunting dog and this is her first season hunting, she's 1.5 years old. I've done all the training myself. I was pretty disappointed with her the first day and hoped she was just figuring things out. Sure enough, she's got 100% better each time she has gone out. The last time she was full on finding quails in bushes and at one point pointed an area of tall grass 10' from my wife - she thought the dog was crazy but as soon as my wife walked over the quail flushed and down goes birdy. Brings them back to our feet every time. Just thrilled.

Man, what an awesome feeling to see your own dog successfully hunt.

I wish I could be back there. I found a big house near my favorite hunting spots in Lincoln County that I could pay cash for, but there's zero chance that discussion would make it past the first sentence before being vetoed.

I do already have a hunting trip to Washington scheduled for the first week of January. I guess my wife feels sorry for me because she suggusted it even though money is tight right now.

That's great! My dog was really great about staying in range from early on, but he never seemed to find any birds. One day I realized that I hadn't taught him that I would follow him if he was on scent so he was finding birds, but abandoning the scent when it trailed too far from me.

The best thing I did to fix it was to put him on really birdy ground with no other dogs or hunters for three days. Then I follow him everywhere he wanted to go. Initially he seemed the be goofin' off, but after we found the first pheasant it was all business. After the first day he was still hunting in range, but constantly searching and visibly more excited when he found scent. My GPS said I walked almost 40 miles hunting that weekend.

Both he and I were totally spent by noon of the third day, but it was a great three days and he's been a totally different dog in the field ever since then.

Nice! I have always wanted to hunt Lincoln County but have never made it over there. I do most of my bird hunting in Whitman. Here is my pups first pheasant a few weeks ago. The hunting is great over here, we have been knocking down a lot of birds this season.

    @careyrob
Are either of you using non lead shot for pheasant?
What is your preference for load, powder charge, and shot size?

I use lead. Non-toxic is only required for waterfowl and some of the release sites here in WA. I feel lead has better patterning and lethality. My preference is 5 or 6 shot 3 1/2 or 3 3/4 dram 12ga for pheasant. For quail I shoot 7 1/2 or 8 shot.

This is Doc taken last month, he is 15.5 and this will be his last Phez hunt. He is going blind, is deaf and really had no interest in hunting and just wanted to walk along with me. Sad days ahead. My black lab is a dynamo and learned a lot from the old man, mostly how to slow down and hunt :)

I agree with @JH5370 on ammo specs and I also only use non-tox shot on waterfowl and State regulated upland habitat.

Lead kills more humanely and effectively and costs less. I've tried the expensive stuff like Prairie Storm , etc, but really the basic 2-3/4" #6 small game loads from any reliable manufacturer work just as well if you hit your target.

On pheasants I load 6's in the first barrel and 5's in the 2nd. Sharptail and huns get 7-1/2's and 6's, quail and doves get 8's and 7-1/2's.

Where there's a chance of a mixed bag I load for the biggest bird that I'm likely to encounter. At close range and with a tight choke you can take pheasants with 8's so if one gets up when I'm quail hunting I may take a shot with the 2nd barrel if I can get on him quickly enough. Otherwise I just let him go.

What load I shoot in any particular day will change with the conditions. For example, early in the season I'll shoot pheasants with 6's and more open chokes and late in the season I'll shoot 5's with tighter chokes. Same story with light wind vs. higher winds (or anything else that can make birds more jumpy.)

I got a bunch of 20 ga hevi-shot 4's for dirt cheap. If I have to use non-tox that's usually what I'll shoot, but I try to avoid hunting where it's required since I don't want a ticket for accidentally leaving one lead shell or one non-tox shell in my vest. (In most states you can't carry both at once.)

I’m hoping your old pup is still with you. I know that this is an older post, but we recently lost our pup and know how much it can hurt.

Thanks for the sentiment, I just put down my 14.5 yo yellow lab 2 months ago :(. I am sorry to hear about your pup.
He is still with us. The vet has him take a dog pot pill once a day for seizures, he has brain cancer and it seems to help reduce the number and severity of the seizures. I suspect he will make it another 3-5 mths (fingers crossed) He is eating and gets around fine. Just lost his hearing and is losing his eyesight. Sense of smell is still strong and guides him well. For an adopted dog and a golden, I got very lucky with him. None of the crazy breeding issues prevalent in goldens :)
