I never saw it your way, but yeah all terrains have the worst characteristics of both street, and mud tires with none of the benefits. Heavy, loud, equally as useless on icy roads and they load up with dirt/mud/snow in about two revolutions. Not to mention the price!!! $1000 out the door, if you get cheap ones.

You know, i actually agree 100%.

    Ban me. *mic drop

So what would be your solution for someone that lives with 4 seasons?

I built out my first CJ in 1972 in High School while taking auto and metal shop. You apparently need to get out more.....lol you think a street tire would be better than a 3 peak AT going over the divide in winter for example? That's on road, let alone off road. That's just laughable. The CO state trooper will be laughing too while writing up your ticket after hearing your explanation why your street tires aren't chained up. I'll stick with my 3 peak ATs. ATs are a decent compromise. Not all ATs are the same and for some reason are being lumped altogether here which is nonsensical. Some are better. A lot better. True, there are places up here where you could go wheeling with streeters and plenty of places where streeters wouldn't be advisable. Been offroading going on 50+ years now btw. All over the place...

That's why I run dedicated winter tires on all 3 of my vehicles.

We get 4 seasons here in Colorado but you rarely see dedicated winter tires around the front range. The winter snow comes and goes for the most part and doesn't make sense unless you live up in the high country where winter snow conditions are an every day occurance and it makes sense to run dedicated winter tires.

Well, that might work. Snow tires, road tires, mud/off-road tires, but no all terrain…:D

In a truck with 4wd…kind of pointless with good all terrain tires.

We have separate snow tires/wheels for the Subaru and Lexus, but that works well for us.

Just highway and snow tires for me.

My brother is lazy so he runs ATs on his Sierra. :anonymous: But he also has 4Auto and drives on gravel a lot.

Mine lasted 30k before the tread wouldn’t pass inspection for being so low.

That's kind of my train of thought with a 4x4 truck. They make street tires with snow tire characteristics in an all-season mix (Michelin Defenders for one example). I carry a set of cables if I get stuck out in a snow squal, that doesn't happen too often though.

That’s what make the Defenders so interesting and relevant after years of minor changes.

They don’t meet the snow requirements HOWEVER they have HANDILY beat, performance wise, in snow/ice the vast majority of AT tires with the snow peak rating I have used. Until you the snow gets very deep.

A/T tires with big knobby treads are best used to drown out your gf/wife’s voice when riding on the highway because she won’t let you turn up the radio to drown out her bickering.

I never seen over 35k on a set either. To be fair, the only LT truck tire I ever seen go the distance was some BFG KO2 tires on my Tundra. I was blown away.

The original LTX M/S tires were good with a harder rubber compound but both the Defender M/S2s and LTX M/S2s have a softer compound that does wear out sooner. Even the techs changing them regularly agreed with me.

I’m not sure what compound in 2005 on the LTX M&S tires, but those are the ones I received 35k miles. Now this was also on a HD truck that towed a lot and had a slide in camper.

My current Michelins are the AT2’s. I have beat on this set. These have 28k miles on them without rotating. Not bad for a rear passenger side tire…

    1A5F4A01-6240-4F50-88CF-82599CE24ADC.jpg

Had I rotated these tires, I’m sure I would still have 9-10/32nd. Currently my rear tires have 8-8.5/32nd. I do believe that these set will go 35k miles.

Do you have the 6 ply or 10 ply tires? I’m not familiar with the available load ratings on the AT2s. Personally, I don’t have experience with the 10 plys but I thought they lasted longer for both towing and heavy payloads.

I am required to have load index 124 rated 10 ply tires. I have been considering the move up to 275/70/18 to get the 125 load index rating. That might help a bit as well.

I think they generally do last longer.

My truck is too sensitive to inbalance to run 10ply tires. Ps and Cs for this guy.

Btw my truck tows just fine with P-rated tires. 115 load index.

Best I've seen on an AT (or any tire) was 68K on a set of Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires on one of our work trucks. They were even studded, and studded ATs are second only to a true winter tire with studs for ice performance. Lots of on and off road driving in all weather conditions. Pretty sure it was a fluke.

Wow! That’s amazing. Hotshots that actually take care of their rigs get stupid amounts of mileage hauling loads. It takes discipline and dedication I don’t have. :D Stop and go really eats up the tires. When towing this summer picking up loads of dirt there is a spot I get caught at 50% of the time at a light. To get moving again, the truck is on concrete , uphill start, and plenty of fuel is needed for this to all happen. The rear tires just start slipping and sometimes traction is lost all together. What is even more surprising is the tires had ~7000 lbs pushing down on them (3500 lbs pin weight 3350 sprung weight) and still lost traction.
