I absolutely agree w/this... What better time than now to use a combo of "new generation" of vehicles, new technology, new "need" for climate awareness, product shortages, etc. for the big companies to assess "new" market price points for their products!

Consumers as a whole have been begging to be "let in" and "allowed" to purchase these new vehicles (and even used ones) at much higher price points, w/o haggling, hesitation or question. The manufacturers can now easily and permanently bump their price points up 10, 20 or even 30% all in the name of technology, supply and regulations, and they know the consumer won't even bat an eye about it.

We as consumers are highly complicit in this transformation and will now reap the rewards of our tolerances!!!

If anything, the prices on new vehicles have increased by a lower percentage than most items have. I’m surprised they don’t cost more than they do considering just how much steel has increased.
While I agree the prices are insane, I seriously doubt they’ll ever get cheaper, and we’ll never see the prices we did a couple of years ago.

If they’re selling 100% of their inventory at those prices it’s honestly hard to blame them.

I've worked entirely in Title I schools. These are schools that have a high level of socioeconomically disadvantaged children and many, if not all, get free lunch. Many of these kiddos have single parent households where momma is working 2+ jobs and grandma is looking after them and/or daddy's in prison. The kiddos thrive on affection and positivity and if they cannot get it at home, they'll get it somewhere else - teachers fill that role more often than not and I wouldn't have it any other way. The students who struggle and get support from home or school, show growth. The ones who do not get it from anywhere simply do not grow and that's a tragic loss for all of us as a society. I'm so thankful for parents who love their kids and actually show it by being active in their education.

History repeats itself...in more ways than one :(

Any recos on where to put money for when that happens? I've held on to my truck (and plan to continue to do so), but we have a boat on order as well, so we've been stashing away some money for that. Might be more worthwhile to invest it somewhere or buy something now or right after the crash... :D

Same....and conversely, I want to go on the freaking warpath when we find otherwise.

Wife was between jobs for a while in 2013-2014, and subbed as a school nurse for the local school district. She came home literally sobbing one day; I just basically held her until she could talk to me.

That particular day she had a 'frequent flyer' nurse visit her @ the school's nurse office. Ostensibly the girl was there because she 'was sick to her stomach.' My wife was getting ready to do her thing...and a friend who was also a nurse gave the girl some crackers and took my wife aside.

Turns out that, for that particular girl, 'sick to her stomach' was code for 'needs some food.' Her parents were known users of drugs, did NOT treat her well (though the treatment stopped short of actual abuse), and she frequently had lice. She came down to the nurse's station daily because she got no food at home. (As in, if she was home over a weekend, the only food she got - ALL WEEKEND - was what she could managed to beg off of friends/family/etc.)

I'm not the angriest guy out there, and I've never professed to be the 'best dad ever.' But suffice it to say I wanted to lay waste to a few parents that day. Even sitting here now typing that has me semi-choked up. ALL children simply want to know that they're loved and supported. I'm so thankful for parents *AND* teachers who provide both of those.

I know those stories. I come off as a stout guy. Seen a thing or two, whatever. Kids though, the stuff I come across at school sometimes... it's enough to keep you up at night. My wife used to be a CASA volunteer. She, too, knows how these kids lives all too well.

Recently, we went out to dinner on a rare kid-free night. I tried to tell her about how this one kiddo I worked with was sitting in a small group when another student brought out something they made for their mom for Mother's Day. The student said a little blurb about how their mom was wonderful etc and Zack said something like "That's really nice. You're lucky. I wish I had a mom like that but she gave me up for drugs." Turns out he and 4 siblings had to be rescued one night when the cops came and took his mom away. All of them were going to foster housing until his Aunt stepped in and scooped them up. All 5 kids.

It's true that not all heroes wear capes.

S+P is down 15% since Jan 1 2022. I'd find the bottom and buy in.

As much as I hate my kids sometimes for in-ability to follow simple rules (i.e. pickup after yourself, or take your plates/bowls to the sink after you are done, etc) and sometimes I would withhold food for a bit, but I would cave in later and still feed them, trying to tell them the reason for withhold.
That story, unfortunately, is something we see/hear all too often. As a guy standing at 6"2 and leaders of many groups and teams at work, this breaks my heart.

Dads, give your kid(s) a big hug tonight.

Fck getting paid. Sign me up as a volunteer.

That said, i understand the flaw in our logic here. Adoption or being enrolled in a big brother program would actually do some good and I could do either right now.

If you have the time look into being a CASA volunteer or ask your local elementary if they'll need mentors next school year. Good male role models are sorely needed at the elementary level. So many times those grade levels are overlooked for the more "active and fun" middle school and high school aged kids.

Being a parent is a full time job. The hardest challenges you’ll face are helping your kids when you want to kill them.

Time. Patience. Grace. Saying no when it’s hard. Letting them learn lessons the hard way, and picking them up when they fall.

Life’s greatest challenge and even greater reward.

Went to look at cars today and we were at a difference of 4000 dollars and they would not come off the full MSRP plus all the extra crap they are adding at an inflated price to the buyer!! We walked!!! Going to be a long long while before things calm down I am afraid.:) but that car will sell before the weekend is over!!

I ordered a new Power Stroke Ford F-250, Lariat, loaded out pretty well, for a new work vehicle on March 4th of this year. My buddy’s family owns the dealership. We had honestly expected a build and delivery date of November or December of this year as Ford had cut off all orders shortly after ordering mine. To our surprise, the truck was built May 9th and delivered a few days later. As I know the vehicle market, especially trucks, pretty well, I expected to pay MSRP but I wasn’t willing to pay more. At some point I’ll get rid of this truck and will want to make some money back. From the time we ordered it in March and it being built in May, the MSRP went up about $2,600! I still bought it for considerably below that. So many stealerships are selling above MSRP now, but in two or three years when their customer wants a new vehicle and there’s stability in the auto industry, these folks will be too upside down to trade. They won’t be able to get a new vehicle and the dealer won’t get a sell either. It’s frightening what I’ve known of buyers paying over sticker on new trucks.
(I was offered $5k above sticker before I ever took it off the lot from a guy looking for a new truck)

Sometimes you gotta just put $hit out there cuz the timing is right! When it comes to kids, there is NO wrong time, and we have to do everything we can to show them a proper world; not this $hitshow we (as taxpayers) are currently funding. So, in my humble opinion, every time we have the opportunity to be involved and steer the narrative in the right direction we need step up and do the right thing.

Car Market will not change for a while.....Dealers are doing better in the sense of car's being sold prior to even arriving no inventory costs on top of markups equals more money in pocket and less staff to run the dealership. Gas prices rising and inflation rising will lead to an influx in the used car market with many defaulting on their loans. Tundra owners are getting more then $600 smiles per month now....Watch the EV market as well, once more cars saturate that market, electricity will be on the rise. We are all screwed until we get a new administration that cars about the people and realizes that non of this affects the 1% and the middle class is suffering and the gaps between economic classes is only growing.

If there is one piece of advice I’d give above all else, it’s to teach them critical thinking skills and objectivity. Teach them to form their own opinions, and let them make their own decisions as much as you can (within reason). Teach them to question everything no matter the source, including yourself.

That last part may not sit well with some, and I don’t mean we should allow kids to question or disrespect our authority. What I mean is don’t do the “because I told you so” thing that parents have done forever.
If you have a rule or tell them to do something, explain why. If you can’t explain why, then you probably need to question if it’s legitimate to begin with. “Because I told you so” will only have power for so long. Actually explaining why a rule or demand exists is much more effective long term.

I screwed up plenty along the way, but my number one goal in all my kids’ lives was to raise them to think for themselves, to never follow anyone or anything blindly, and to form their own opinions on every subject. I didn’t make rules I couldn’t justify. I didn’t try to control them on issues that didn’t matter. I was hands off as much as possible.
I now have two adult children, and one teenager. I feel like doing things this way paid off tremendously. I couldn’t be prouder of who they’ve become.

Critical thinking and problem solving are the bane of teachers', and students', existence. These were the objectives back when I was in school but I feel as though post-Covid kids' work ethic has tanked. They basically sat at home for a year (some even longer) and now that school is back in session, they have a ton of lethargy to work through.

You're dead on with sparking curiosity through scientific-based inquiry. It pushes the imagination and forces query driven learning. Turn-and-talk aka peer instruction is vital yet all too often it's one kid or no kids participating. Right now, teachers are happy to have kids raise their hand to go to the bathroom (just joking they do that entirely too much).

I think we'd have to all fight each other to get that position

    *OR*

Set up some sort of rotation. LOL I won't even pretend to be Mr. Physical Badass

    **BUT**

My kid/my wife, and others' kids, and protecting them, is the exception. F*** with them and we WILL have problems.

And teaching finance before they get out of high school, I mean, that got to be something they NEED to teach.
I came from a time where I live paycheck to paycheck, not a care in the world, and almost couldn't afford to pay taxes, because I forgot to budget for it.
Now, smarter(hopefully) and older, this is something I watch out for all the time, but yea, critical thinking and personal finance is something I wish all grade school would teach.
If I get a chance, I pull my kids out of school (come summer they will be 1st grade and pre-K) just to travel for a week or so, knowing that what I teach them out in the nature will add up more than in class.
I still remember during COVID, my then pre-K kid were in NJ for a very small family wedding, and during that distance learning, it was learning about harvest and apples (Oct) and I texted the teacher saying that we are leaving now for an apple orchid to see real apples on the tree. You be amazed how the light in the kid's eye just blew up seeing the real thing (it was a farm, so animals, too) in person, and she collected two bags full of leaves (red and yellow and everything in between) and brought it back to school for the kids to share, and the teacher said, that was something that classroom can't provide (Houston doesn't really have leaves turning colors, they are either green or fallen off the tree) and they loved it.

And OP, sorry for taking this post this far from your original posting and thoughts.....it just brings a lot to think on. As far as used car market, it hurts all of us, and I was in the process of trying to buy and repair and maybe resell, the in-taking price is just insane to even justify the possible outcome once done, so that got shelved for a while.
Also, working in international logistic, marine transportation, I can tell you that regardless of the supply/demand/China vs US vs world, the whole "no container no vessel space" thing is as real as it gets, and it has not even touched the bottom yet. At the beginning of 2021, I was already planning 2023, and earlier 2022, I am planning for 2025. We have already considered 2022/23 toasted 2 weeks into 2022. 2024 is considered recovery at this point with 2025 posing for a "new normal" But as the world gets more crazy, that timeline will get pushed back..... So yea, take good care of your trucks people, they need to be running for the next 20 years or more.

Done already. :) Without going into too much detail, suffice to say I grew up partially as one of those kids - my Dad's 2nd wife abused me (locked in rooms/bathrooms/closets for hours; beat with a paddle - like a 2' long paddle; told I was unloved; the whole 9 yards). The reason I turned out halfway normal (depending on who you talk to, LOL) is because while my Dad didn't know about the abuse...I KNEW he loved me, and that counteracted all the BS. :)
