    1 or 2... I lost count
My headunit retains some of my steering wheel buttons but I had to tell it what the buttons mean. There was a page in the settings of mine that had a function and then I pressed the button that I wanted to be assigned to that function, it has zero to do with the legend on the steering wheel button unless I set it up correctly.

I’m gonna agree on all counts here. Not familiar with that particular HU, but it appears that it will directly accept the steering wheel control (SWC) signals - vs other head units that use an intermediate unit like the Maestro.
Either way, the SWC signals need to be set up/programmed by the device receiving them so that it maps them correctly. With the Maestro, that is done via the online tool like 1lowlife posted. With you HU, I would surmise it’s done directly in the settings somewhere

OK, so let me see if I've got this right. When attempting to learn about and possibly repair an automotive head unit, or for that matter any device, it would behoove me to not stop on page 2 of the owner's manual where the wiring schematic is and start ripping out my perfectly mounted head unit and start looking for wiring problems. Instead, I should be a little more patient and thorough by actually continuing to read the entire, massive 26 pages (approx. 5" x 7" half-height pages) of the manual so that I could get to page 15 titled "Steering Wheel Control Setup" which would give me the correct information needed to be able to reprogram and correct my steering wheel controls. What do you men think about my plan?

Terrible plan. I say rip it out and open and start soldering things together.

Hate to say it, but RTFM is usually a solid plan.

Or this. What could go wrong?

With our access, the only correct option is to read through a lot of unrelated stuff to find what you're looking for. I believe Casey (@RainMan_PNW), the guy who spent a LOT of his time putting this together for us, said that if you bought access to the manual online, you would be able to find specific systems with an easy search and by clicking on a few links. Unfortunately, we don't have that interconnected capability with what he was able to post.

Or start your own separate thread and not bury it in this one.
You'd probably get more input if someone saw a thread titled, 'Having issues with steering wheel control on an aftermarket HU".

I'm quite surprised this cheap POS HU of yours doesn't have an SWC interface...
Since you're digging around, what are the green and grey wires connected to?
Did they hack into OEM wiring?

    Did you fix it?

    PDN-621HB_manual_20210706.cdr (poweracoustik.com)

Did you ever pull up the SWC menu and see what was there?

    upload_2023-1-19_9-17-32.jpg upload_2023-1-19_9-24-18.jpg

And just for giggles, you should have started your own thread and not cluttered this one up.
You may have received more and better responses.
Perhaps from someone else that went the cheapest way possible to replace their HU..
I get it your truck came with it, but wow, what a $200 POS.

His post was sarcasm - he was poking fun at himself for not reading far enough into the manuals for the HU to realize the information he needed was there.

I’ll give the new guy a pass - we were all there once

    That's pretty obvious, but thanks.
Next time I'll teehee a little more..

I'm genuinely curious about what those 2 wires are connected to.
Also wondering if he got it fixed.

The steering wheel controls are just a resistor network that send signals in a clever way by varying resistance.
The middle of the three wires is the common ground. The other two are circuit 1 and circuit 2.

His headunit diagram has a call out for all 3 wires and this is what they should be hooked up to.

His problem is the headunits interpretation of what each signal means. The fact most are working means the wiring is right. He just has to "map" what each signal should control in the headunit.

I’ve got a scenario/request for you. So I have a spinal cord injury and require hand controls to drive. There’s a control pod on the the controls with buttons that can be programmed to control features of the truck. The things I need to be controlled are the turn signals left button for left turn signal, right button for right signal, and the center button for the horn. They need to be hard wired into the vehicle switches for each of these. So I’m trying to find the wires and wire colors at the switch locations. Can you help me please? I went through the 2008 DC diagrams/schematics, but was wondering if you could point me straight to the answer with your wiring wizardry. Below is a pic of the hand control and you can see the directional buttons I’m talking about. Thank you!

I worked at a Transportation Research facility while in college. One of the researchers was doing a huge study on ADA driving options and controls. We had a Toyota Sienna you could drive the entire thing with one hand. Throttle, Steering, Gear R N D was all on one joystick. We needed testing hours in it so one day all the student works got to try it out. I drove that thing around an abandoned runway for hours. It was fun and crazy all at the same time.

The directional buttons are in the pad in front of the knob? Not that it matters - I can still help you dig up the wiring info. Give me a little bit to get it pulled up.

My only question was if the blinkers are on a momentary type button? IE as long as you hold the button down the blinker is on, or is it a push the button once and the blinker activates for x seconds?

The horn should obviously be a hold for horn, release and it goes off.

Yes, it’s the round directional buttons with a button in the center. Since I one hand controlling the brake and gas, and the other steering, the buttons allow me to control things like turn signals, horn, and whatever else without having to take my hand off the controls.

Attached are the full diagrams for the Horn and the Turn Signals.

For the Horn, you want pin 8 on the J45 connector that goes into the TRUCK side of the spiral cable. Remember that the pins numbers are looking at the open end of the connector, NOT the end the wires go into.

    upload_2023-3-27_20-14-21.png

I have the same question as Jeff regarding the turn signals. If they are latching (i.e. stay pushed in when you press them) or momentary (they only are active while held down) is going to be important for function. Mostly because it will determine how you have to interact with them...

As for the signal wire, here's the appropriate part of the schematic.
    upload_2023-3-27_20-17-44.jpg

Left turn signal is either pin 15 on connector J10 (at the stalk) or pin 6 on connector J29 (at the flasher relay).
Right turn signal is either pin 13 on connector J10 (at the stalk) or pin 7 on connector J29 (at the flasher relay).

They come up with some pretty impressive stuff for people with disabilities, unfortunately they never really seem to come to fruition for the consumer, or at least at an affordable cost. If you label anything with “disability” the cost automatically jumps up 500%. The hand controls that I got and are pictured cost about $3800. All they really are is a few brackets and metal rods. The available products in the community remain somewhat archaic compared to advancing technology. Products often get eaten up by liability and red tape, and usually stay in the R&D or prototype phase.

Thank you so much Casey! The function for the turn signals are you hit the left button on the pod to engage the left turn signal, and then hit it again to turn them off, and vice versa with the right signals (no self cancelling). The factory turn signal lever function remains the same as self canceling so you can use either the pod or the factory lever.

From what I gather the connections seem to be in the stalk. I was checking out the J29 connector for the signals, and saw the J10 but couldn’t figure out where the J10 was pointing. I thought J10 was pointing to somewhere under the dash, so again, thank you for clarifying and pointing out the stalk locations for horn and signals.

It sucks because these hand control companies don’t sell directly to the consumer, and I have to rely on these installer companies to install things properly. You would think that they would be fully versed in all things about the products they install, but they are definitely not. I seem to know more about their job than they do in most cases which is scary when handing over my baby. I’ve had my interior apart so many times I can do it with my eyes closed having installed my own audio and lighting over the years.

I fully agree with your stance on not wanting to get into politics . You couldn’t pay me enough to take that job.

Casey had the same question. When you hit the left or right button it turns the signals on, and they stay on until you press the button again to turn them off. Yes, the horn is a push for on, and release for off.

I used to be very active here (and the other forum we don’t speak of), but it looks like they deactivated my account from inactivity over a few years. Sucks because I had a lot of good stuff, and some DIY threads on here. Strange they all disappeared. Anyway, I fell somewhere between you with snide remarks and sarcasm, and Casey’s effort in helping strangers I’ve never met on the internet.

J10 is up in the steering column at the switch wand.
J29 is down at the flasher relay at the main ECU.
J45 is up in the steering column at the "truck front" side of the sprial cable and steering wheel.

If the installer is pulling the steering wheel column cover, then getting to J10 and J45 will both be near each other.

There used to be a few different "Tundras" sites I would frequent (besides TT and TS) back between 2009 and about 2013... When I got active again before buying my '21, many of the old sites I had bookmarked were gone or dead. IBTOHQ (which morphed into TG) was basically a ghost town and disappeared shortly after that. The other one that I thought was Tundras wasn't this site - maybe it was ".net" but I can't recall exactly. I know there was one that wasn't the "big two" at the time and was before this place started.

Anyway - doesn't really matter. This place is the place to be.

The installer let me check out the instructions and they are pretty detailed so that is a bit of a load off my mind. Confirmed that the connections are in the column. I printed out the corresponding sections from your wiring files to make sure they match the directions they have. I also showed him how to get into the column, and other panels he needs to remove.

I went back into my old bookmarks and the other main forum I used was TT.net. I was able to log in and see my activity from 2008-2010. I think this one is new to me. Happy to be here, and thanks again!
