Had the truck and trailer out the other day. Ambient about 50 degrees. Drove for an hour on the freeway, averaging 65 mph. Travel trailer was at about 4k lbs and just me in the truck, so not overly loaded. I drove in T/H and D and peaked at 217 degrees.

I bought the partial kit from @chasenicholas93, which included the cooler, mounting bracket, horn relocate bracket, hoses, and connects. I bought the OEM Toyota parts separately (the thermostat, hard lines, and the hoses that ran between them.

Thanks. If I see excessive temps towing the boat we'll be looking into a kit.

This was from two days ago. Towing my 2000lb boat in ambient temp of 59 degrees. About a 25 min trip to the lake. I don’t think this is excessive but when its 80-85 degrees outside I’m sure it will look a lot different.

What kind of numbers did you have before adding the cooler?

Depends on the weight of the boat. He’s in 6th gear at 76 mph and it’s only 205. I’d say that isn’t too bad.

    Engine coolant is 205 also.

Those are really good numbers, your about 35 -40 deg cooler in the pan temps than I would be hauling a similar load in 6th. TC temp will drop quickly if you have that low a pan temp.

I thought so too. Boat and trailer are around 4500lbs. Before the cooler it would run 225-230 in the pan and 240-248 at the TC.

Texas highways are 75mph and I will go the speed limit when possible. Trailer tires are speed rated for it. I'm comfortable with the temps before the cooler and still comfortable with the temps.

Just want to make sure peeps don't think the cooler will magically make the temps under 200 towing in D at speed limits.

    There’s a big difference between 205 and 240.

I just ordered the Setrab kit. If nothing else, for piece of mind. Towing my 2000lb boat to the lake 25 min away will probably not kill my trans. But if I get a bigger boat (someday) or a TT or tow longer distances then it will be ready and I’ll have no worries.

Well your comment would be slightly relevant if you said 205 and 230. But you choose the pan temp after cooler and the TC before the cooler. I think you've provided enough disinformation on the cooler threads.

Disinformation ? I have seen 240 pan temps in D with a similar load, how is that disinformation? I’ll be happy to see 205 pan temps when I get my kit installed. You guys in flat America have no idea how much topography affects these trans temps here in the Mtns.

In the hills just north of Boise, 60 degree day, 240 at the T/C, pan temp peaked at 220 a few seconds later. Not towing anything, just me in the truck and a new spray-in bedliner in the back. Running the mountain roads a little later at 65mph oftentimes had the T/C in the mid 230s. Not even going to risk running it in Hell's Canyon next summer heading up to hunting camp without a cooler. One of Nick's "ugly" weld kits should be arriving today.

Yeah typical grades out here in the west heat things up quickly. I picked up one of the ugly weld kits too, came in yesterday.

    torque converter

Does rise when unlocked but drops quickly once locked. No S4, just drive and go.

Nice, thats the way it’s supposed to be driven! All this S4 nonsense to keep the transmission from overheating will be nice to forget!

I assumed the TC, which fluctuates a lot more than the pan temp and drops faster too when not under load, and from what I’ve read will be higher in 6th while towing but I don’t fully understand the TC lock vs unlock.

Because the clutch is no longer slipping (which is what generates heat). Crank and input are at a 1:1.

Vehicle:2021 Tundra crew max. Running around town with ambient 50-70 degrees and transmission in D, driving 0-45 mph roads, transmission pan temperature is 200-204 degrees range. At 70 mph 204-206 degrees range.
Towing: 8 foot wide, 11.5 foot high, and 8500 lb. travel trailer.
Ambient 50-60 degrees. Cruise rolling hills on interstate at 65 mph with transmission in S4 per manual, the transmission pan temperature is between 204 to 209 degrees. Now if you put the transmission in D the pan temperature increases to 221 to 224 degrees. The engine will go to 5th and 6th on level ground but drops to 4th on hills. However trying to run in D with this heavy load has zero advantages as the gas mileage is not any better, the transmission is constantly shifting, and the transmission temp is significantly higher. Conclusion is run a heavy load in S4 per the manual for best performance.

Good data thanks for posting! How many miles were you pulling this trailer? That is gotta be getting to (reasonable) max weight travel trailer territory for half tons.

At first glance yes it does.

But assuming he has an unpinned thermostat, the temps won't go much higher than that by more than 5 degrees.

I have towed my trailer about 3000 miles total. It tows much more stable then my previous F150 with the aluminum body. That 4.30 rear end gives it a lot of guts for towing. Get about 8.2 mpg.

manaul only says to tow in S4 when going downhill. Reason being keep rpm up for alternator to ensure enough power for trailer brakes. If you towed at 65 mph on I-10 you would be ticketed for inhibiting traffic. Most go 80-85 mph.

Go ahead and do that if you want. Just don't come here and complain about your fuel economy or transmission temperature afterwards.
