Finally got back to looking into this. (Bought a 94 Jeep and was looking over that) Had 7 more blown fuses, changed them and the truck started right up but battery light was on. Checked voltage of battery and it was good and started it and checked and it was 18 and climbing. Guess it's time to replace alternator and see what that does. Thanks to everyone who chimed in with info!

    What battery do you have?

I have seen where a bad battery can read normal voltage with no load and cause high voltage when running. Usually agm or gel style batteries.

It's a brand new one from Auto Zone, the agm type.

Please try a reg battery before spending any more money for alt. Battery may be causing voltage spike, leading to blown fuses

Voltage regulator is bad is my bet.

I'll try the regular battery first. Is the voltage regulator part of the alternator?

Did you install the necessary diode when you upgraded to AGM? No, or need more details? Check this reply and read the quotes, then read the couple of replies after the quote I linked. Potential problems await you if you didn't...

Its under the rear cover plate on the alternator, or it should be. Its not part of the alternator, just mounted to it so it can be replaced separately.

That only applies if its below 14v for charging. Good to do with an AGM, but won't fix his problem... Unless that fuse is blown .

If he's spiking 18v it's a bad voltage regulator or possibly battery sense wiring (tells voltage regulator batt voltage to limit charging voltage).

Right, just saying it's good practice. I agree with you & Rod's thoughts on this.

Lol. I know you know but others might not.

I should have prefaced it with a note to that effect.

Got the truck back last night from garage. It was the alternator overcharging. Runs like a champ now! Thanks for all the input, it really helped
