Don't even know where to begin with that. Can you elaborate, please?

I'm happy at 70k miles and will have to decide in 2-3 years if better fuel mileage outweighs longterm reliability. All of the brands are trying to get max fuel mileage, and the extreme complexity of these new gen engines are worrisome.

Not sure what to elaborate on but i'll try. What i wrote was what our conversation consisted of. After sitting and talking to him about Tundras for the better part of an hour and comparing his comments to what i've learned/watched/read/etc about the Tundra over the last 4 months, it was obvious to me that besides working at a Toyota dealership he's also a Tundra geek (and owner of a '22 by the way) because he knew details of the truck the average person wouldn't have a clue about. In other words my bullshit detector didn't go off. Like many on here i've studied this truck.
As far as my point on the turbos, just because there's a potential software or some other fix for the wastegate issue doesn't mean the turbos are immune from other failures. There's many other ways for them to have issues just like any other part of a vehicle. Example: if you truck doesn't start does that mean the starters bad? Of course not, it could be the fuel system, battery, injectors, etc. are the culprit. The turbos have many other parts besides the wastegate and there's a computer controlling all this stuff so it isn't the only possible problem turbos can have, that's all.
The main point I was steering towards was with the cabs being lifted off for wastegate issues. Are others seeing this still happening. If not then perhaps Toyota has discovered the core issue and subsequent fix that doesn't require that (software for example), and maybe that helps others with more direct knowledge of this into whittling down the potential possibilities of what is actually happening.

At the end of the day none of us know details on this issue/fix. What i find interesting is how one theory catches and everyone seems to believe it. I was just sharing a conversation without trying to steer anyone, take it or leave it.

Thanks for elaborating. As of yesterday in the official online repair resource, Toyota was still telling their techs to replace the turbo for the wastegate stuck open/closed code that most are seeing. There continues to be a diagnostic procedure that I believe attempts to get the code to come up to double check the code prior to replacing a not inexpensive part. The replacement procedure per the manual does involve pulling the cab or the motor. Apparently can also be done via the wheel well, but not per official recommendation.

You appear to be far from the first customer told a salesperson told it's just a software update. There is even one on YouTube. However, there are number techs out there asking these jerks to please stop spreading misinformation.
You can imagine how well these customers are taking being told their brand new truck is going to be in the shop for weeks or months waiting on parts. It ain't the salesperson getting that angry call, that gets transferred right back to the service department.
We needn't compound the the situation asking the poor techs to argue with the customer over it being a parts vs. software issue. Even if well intended, the salesperson wishing it's a mouse click software update are just compounding the issue.
There have been several techs on here reporting that the issue is mechanical binding somewhere in the actuator assembly.

Don't feel bad, most car salesmen are Class A BS artists. I'm guilty of it too though. Early on, spent half an hour trying to figure out what trim had what gas tank, before getting transferred to the sale manager who informed me that "the new Tundras all have a 20 gallon tank as it gets 30 MPG" Recommend we both make a point to reinvest that time making friends with our mechanics.

I remember seeing something about excessive oil consumption after repair of the Turbo, was that just a one off or has there been any more updates on that?

The architecture of the engine may not be entirely new, but it is a new engine build for the factory that is building it. New engine on the line, fresh products..human nature of manufacturing.

    march build?

I haven't seen a march build crap out yet and thats what Im looking for as time goes along, would likely see a march build failure next month at the rate this has been tracking

Fingers crossed this is the case and not that they've slowed production. Less trucks produced gives a smaller number to have a percentage of failures from.

true, we shall see soon as its midway through the month and I dont think we've seen a march build crap out yet, so if that says that way for a while longer we are likely done with the new issues. then the builds before march have to sort out all the existing and potential failures.

toyota should offer an extended warranty for the all the builds so far IMO, that would take care of the ticking time bomb feeling for the newer owners. They have done this in the past so there is precedent

I have not seen one either and likely those are starting to hit lots now. Agreed on the warranty.

I wouldn't hold your breath on Toyota extending the warranty. I tried that on my 2020 after issues and was denied. Other 2022 owner's have mentioned it and I'm not aware of anyone getting an extension.

We had a highlander that suffered a catastrophic engine failure. Toyota obviously repaired it under warranty. But the guy pestered them enough they gave him a 100k mile power train warranty for 7 years or w/e. Basically free platinum warranty for the power train. So they do indeed do it… I just personally don’t know how to convince them to

What year did that happen? I think Toyota corp is taking a hard line on extended warranties when issues arise.

TRD Air filters. New pass side turbo : )
I've personally seen more driver rear window trim issues than turbo problems thus far. My turbo went out at 2xx miles and was fixed in under a week (and no the cab did not come off) and has had 600+mi since of absolute flogging with no ill residuals. Many here have stated the obvious that the engine setup is indeed not "new" but the packaging in the vehicle is. The turbo's and actuators sit differently than in the Lexus and honestly that's where I feel the pass side issue stems from, not an out and out component failure. There was talk of "modifying the wastegate actuator arm" for all of about 24 hours and then The Mothership quickly put the brakes on that suggestion. I looked the old and new units over side by side and for the lift of me couldn't see even the slightest bit of difference in design, part numbers, angle of the dangle or anything. So who knows, I have another 10 years and 100k to not worry about it affecting my wallet.

37 mile 2020 highlander. Wrist pin came out. Super odd failure. Customer was cool about it. Didn’t demand a buy back or anything. This likely lead to the extended warranty dealio.

highlander issues are rare (other than the god awful wind noise complaints) but man.. the 4runners are still by far the best built toyota sold

Nice they did something for him. My experience was completely different. After multiple attempts to fix a noise in 4WD and removing the entire drivetrain except the engine and the noise was still there, I asked for a powertrain extension and was denied. Others on here with the wastegate issue had asked for the extension and were also denied.
