How’s that union job treating you eh? My budy works for BNSF, I don’t think he has ever gotten a raise. This last year alone with inflation if you didn’t get any raise your basically making 7% less money then the year before. Us private employees are all getting raises.

We get raises, just have to wait for contracts to be hammered out. Usually involves a lot of retroactive back pay, plus amusing wailing and gnashing of teeth from the company. Union membership has its ups and downs. Given the shit heels running this show I am glad to have union representation, we experience a great deal of discipline and wrongful termination. In my 15 years of this I’ve lost count of the number of guys or gals who get fired only to be awarded their job and 3-5 years of back pay because an arbitration board found the company to be 100% in the wrong.

Been on both sides: Union Member and many generations of Union in the family business. Private sector senior management after retiring US Army.

One statement defines the issue. Unions and Corporations that are unionized exist due to feeding each other's inadequacies.

    Now back to Turbo Issues

Buddy works for Norfolk, he pretty much echos what you’ve said. He’s on the signal/crossing crew.

From what I've read about the 5th Gen Runner it's the electronic throttle calibration that gives the impression it's slower than expected. 4.0l is a strong engine with a lot of torque at low-to-medium RPM, but if the electronic throttle doesn't respond linearly that makes it seem weak. Pedal Commander or some such to trick the ECU away from the factory calibration.

It’s a fine platform. The frustrating thing for me was the transmission programming. That stupid thing wanted to dump you all the way to 5th gear by the time you hit 30mph if you weren’t putting your foot into it. Yeah, I want to be in my highway cruising overdrive gear at 30mph o_O.

I just kept it in S4 until hitting 45mph. Problem solved. Still miss that vehicle. Absolute mountain goat of a truck with very minimal mods.

They should have put the 4.6L V8 in the 5th Gen 4Runner along with the 6 speed. I don’t buy the reasoning that it would eat into GX460 sales.

Yeah, just got rid of our 2020 Pro 4R.

Absolutely loved everything about it…. other than the motor / trans / driving it in anything other than off-road. Couldn’t get over how cumbersome it was to drive whenever over 25mph.

Pedal commander helped a bunch, but got a great trade in value on going back to another like new 2020 Jeep SRT to replace my old 2014 SRT.

I have a build date go 12/21 and 1500 miles and no turbo issues yet. I have a 300 mile trip coming up. My question is if i had a problem and the truck goes into limp mode, can I remove the battery cable, will that re set and go back to factory settings and enable me to get out of limp mode (to attempt to get home?)

No, those days are over(long ago)....
That will be a “latched” code.

fwiw, I’ve got better than 2000mi, and no issues thus far.(except poor fuel economy!) The thought is, if it was going to have an issue, it would’ve likely surfaced by now?
If the turbos assys have functioned ok this far?, should continue to function as designed. At least that’s how I see it.
If not, I’d say, Toyo has a much bigger can of worms to deal with.

    Enjoy your truck man.

Texmech, thanks for this info and like your thinking, in terms of fuel economy, I was on the interstate Sunday and forgot to switch to eco mode and will try to remember to do that next time…agree the fuel economy is not as good as I expected.

I haven’t heard of anyones truck going into a limp mode when the turbos go out. Many drive normally with the codes for a while waiting for the dealers to get parts.

Additionally, that “map switch”....hasn’t made much difference for me...j/s.
Hopefully it’ll get better as truck breaks in and “loosens up”.

    Be safe!

Does anyone know if fixing the wastegate issue will resolve the horrible ugly chrome all over this truck and the many other disappointing aspects of it?

I don’t think anyone should use Eco mode. But especially those who don’t change their acceleration habits and driving speeds and still somehow expect to get better than epa fuel economy. I totally agree with you that it does not make any noticeable difference.

Well add me to the list, Platinum built at the end of Nov 2021 gave the check engine light and a parking system malfunction yesterday at ~250 miles. Took to dealer today and they said the wastegate on the bank 1 turbo failure. Parts on order, no ETA, getting setup with a loaner later today.

@amilaw sorry to hear that...I just got my truck back yesterday after having the same issue. It was 3 weeks without my truck. The dealer gave me a 4Runner as a loaner. Not ideal, but they did fix it.

Yeah in a way I'm glad it came up now and get it fixed and not sit there wondering if and when it will happen. I asked for a Tacoma or 4Runner as a loaner we'll see what I get. Heck I'll take a Prius with the way gas prices are right now.

Read on the FB group that a guy with an early February build date has the wastegate issue. Guess they still havent fixed the problem yet.

What would worry me now is that the new turbo will also go out. Roll of the dice but hopefully not.

Very true. I'm going to try and not think about that and take it one step at a time.

Man, I'd totally buy a 2019 if these fuckers weren't asking to sell for 2022 prices.

I hear what you're saying. Heck I sold it for almost $5000 more than I bought it new in 2019 out the door price. It's a crazy market. Looks like the dealer I traded it into is selling it for a couple of grand more than they bought it from me for. Been there a couple of weeks now and hasn't sold yet.

whats craziest about all that is that someone would pay that price for a used 2nd gen. Unless it has zero miles on it, it’s just unbelievable to me. Good for you though.

Yeah there’s no new issues whatsoever it’s like three trucks and people are just re-posting them over and over again. Can you believe there is 50 page thread over that????

Here are a couple fresh ones from the last 48 hours. 140 to 3,500 miles.
