That lines up with my guess of 10%, someone should start a poll on this forum.

Are you seriously referencing Facebook of all things to corroborate some wild guess? God knows how many of these people are answering without the issue or even a truck in their possession. Tons of people who comment in that group are outright trolling and have no interest other than to sow hate and discord among what should be a group of people who actually own one or are waiting for their allocation. At 10% would we not see dealership lots chalk full of broken trucks waiting for repair and a lot more actual media coverage and a formal plan by Toyota communicated?

    .

Don’t think so, +\- 14k trucks sold and +\- 1,200 dealers. Average 1 or 2 per dealer. Certainly some dealers sell a lot more vs others. I’ve seen some dealers claiming none have come back, others claiming several have come back. Reports continue of trucks with recent production dates.

If it’s a mechanically binding wastegate that only crops up after hours of use I wonder if it could be non-spec alloys in deforming under heat load. Certainly could be something else like the actuator motor or bad bearing. I’ve seen a couple mentions of techs saying to avoid high rpm’s which is certainly when turbos see highest temps.

I would argue there has been a lot of media coverage on the issue. Some dealers had multiple waste gate issues on there first few trucks delivered. People with build dates in January are having this issue still, sometimes it happens driving off the lot or other times it’s a couple thousand miles later. so we know there’s a lot more to come.
I have heard all kinds of things idk what’s completely true but Toyota won’t tell us so here we are.

I don’t get why some are getting mad about others complaining about this issue. These are some of the same people bashing the big 3 for the same reason but get their panties in a bunch when it happens to Toyota. Toyota has a problem with this. It’s a complete full redesign. Some of the fanboys here need to understand this was going to happen. Not exactly the westgate issue, but other issues as well. It is what it is, as long as they fix it.

Got my '22 platinum yesterday, took it out this morning and got the dreaded CELs. Only 54 miles and one day ownership...
Can't say I'm surprised but very disappointed.
Seems to me like dealer can't believe the waste gate issue is a real problem.
I was told several times my VIN was "clear" of these issues prior to delivery. My VIN is in the 08XXX range.

That might be the lowest mileage failure we've seen on here so far, that's certainly a bummer. :( Welcome to the forum, let us all know how you make out.

I don't believe a single thing people say here anymore on this issue, especially numbers, but I will say this falls a lot closer to what I'd expect.

For now maybe that’s more accurate. What I’m saying is total with the bad turbos that will eventually fail in the first year or two. Of the trucks currently on the road. With some vehicles failing around 2k miles or more and most trucks probably having less then 1k miles currently.. and they are still installing the bad turbos.

Who’s to say that every single turbo isn’t bad and all we are seeing is just the earliest failures and the majority of failures will happen at a later mileage. While unlikely, I have seen nothing that rules that out.

If the wastegate assembly is mechanically fine day one, but later binding after use, what cause would give certainty that it will only appear within first 1,000 miles or will never appear?

That’s what has me very apprehensive on buying a new tundra , and it seems the newest ones are still failing , that newest one posted was just delivered and only had like 50 miles on it

just not feeling very confident about the entire truck with all the sloppy building as well we have seen

Agreed, was ready to write the check as my current truck is past due. Not all of us have the luxury of waiting this thing out for another 6 months to a year. Will be sad to go elsewhere if Toyota doesn’t sort this.

Ya kinda feel the same way, I’m not even sure I like it yet as I can’t find one to test drive. I’ve been playing around with the ford builder, I like that new black appearance package on the lariat and platinum .

I may go test drive one and see how it is.

One thing I’m wondering on the new 2022 tundra is the getting in and out deal, it seems like it may be worse as far as a pillar rake and having to bend in half to get in, I was hoping that would be better not worse than my 2016, have to test one to see. Also the hood seems way longer, not sure I’m going to like that.

so you think he copied a picture from somewhere signed up and posted that to troll ?

I guess that’s possible but it seems much more likely to me that some trucks are just crapping out.

it’s too bad there isn’t a way to know for sure I guess

Problems are always over exaggerated in forums or groups like the one on Facebook.

Most owners with no issues will not join any of the forums or groups. People who have actual problems will start researching the forums, Reddit, and Facebook groups to find out more information. Hence, the actual percentage of major problems reported on these groups will always be high.

    Very true.

that said this is kinda an extreame case where super expensive trucks are having what I consider a major major failure with hardly any miles on them, this isn’t a minor deal

I really wonder what’s in store for these turbos in the long run, will they all start to fail over time or is it truly just a small batch of the passenger side ones at the very beginning of production.

that gives a lot of people a moment of pause while dropping 50-70k on a new rig

I agree that this is unacceptable regardless of the rate of failure. Toyota needs to get their shit together.

On a positive note, if there is any, the failures are limited new trucks with hardly any miles. One of the Toyota techs here on the forum mentioned that the wastegate was getting stuck due to what appeared mechanical rubbing and binding. This also fits with the fact that these things fail right away if they are defective.

I have mentioned this before. This engine and the turbos are the same as the one found on the new Toyota Land Cruiser (LC300). I have full confidence that Toyota has done the appropriate research and development to equip their most iconic vehicle with a robust and reliable powertrain.

I do not think this particular failure is bad news for the long run. Turbos have been around for a long time and part of diesel engines forever. They can and do last for a very long time if done correctly.

Have not followed this thread closely and have not read all of the post because I have not had issues with the turbos.

Has a service bulletin been issued for inspecting wastegate close clearance issues?

    Thanks,

I don’t think so. I also don’t think there are too many cars effected. It is likely a bad batch of parts. If that is the case and they can trace the parts, they may end up issuing the bulletin for effected cars / vins.

I am at 2k miles with no turbo or any other issue. Fingers crossed, I think my car may be out of the fail window.
