I like how you guys literally make up numbers like you have a single brain cell that knows sales figures or failure rates of these trucks

    What's a good response here.. well I'll be a monkey's uncle.

Sales are posted heh. Well can at least the other brain cell not attach failure percentages?

I work at a toyota dealer and I recently diagnosed one of these turbos as being bad. Funny story with this truck is that it came with the wrong VIN plate under the windshield, so the windshield had to be removed and the vin plate swapped, the glass company damaged the headliner so I had to replace the entire headliner on this brand new truck. they sold the truck to someone a few cities away and they started to have the check engine light come on after less than 100 miles. We ended up buying the truck back and giving them a different one. (incidentally i also just had to replace the "platinum" door moldings on another 22 tundra because they were put on too close to where the front and rear doors meet from the factory and it broke off as soon as the rear door was opened but now i'm ranting) anyway, the turbo has not been replaced yet however I determined that the cause of the problem is the wastegate itself is mechanically binding, the ECM controls the wastegate actuator motor and under normal circumstances the ECM only sends out a 30% duty cycle through this motor to control it in either direction which draws about 1 amp. I performed the active test to control the position of the wastegate and found that the bank 2 wastegate worked normally and moved through a full range of motion however the bank 1 which had the code would move about 1/8 of an inch in either direction then stop. I manually sent battery power straight to the actuator motor and the wastegate was able to move all the way in both directions, the motor drew about 3 amps during this. Esentially I forced the motor to work 100% to move the wastegate, now after clearing the codes it no longer sets the wastegate stuck code right away but I can hear the bank 1 wastegate scraping and squeaking when being controlled by the computer, meaning I esentially freed it up, but obviously it still needs to be replaced before it can be sold. Right now there is only a tech tip stating that the the turbo and actuator are not separately servicable, and that tech assist will need to be contacted before ordering a new turbo. I suspect that soon there will be a TSB released stating that there was a defect in the manufacting process of certain turbos.

The vin plate was all fixed legit as far as i'm aware. it came like that from the factory and it was noticed at some point after taking delivery of the truck. I doubt anybody removed the windshield to tamper with the vin maliciously.

So these are the sales number from toyota
    November 2021. 3,446
    Dec 2021. 3,705
    January 2022 4,952
    Total. 12,103

These figured do not mean they are all 2022 models, just Tundras, they were still selling 2021's late into the year.

I guess it would depend on how the state sees that. I just never heard of that happening before. So was it the same vin number or new vin number? The reason I ask is that the plate in the windshield is not the only place there is a vin marked on the truck....that would be a bummer for a new owner if it was changed and the others were not

We got month of February as well, which would put the numbers above 15000 total sold.

Yet, we only have 5 documented cases on this forum. Strange for such a widespread issue. Time will tell if the number of documented cases will go up or not.

There’s a guy who posted a video of his 1794 door trim doing that. Just some bad qc.

what was more laughable than the offset trim is the Toyota fanboys that just blindly accept anything “Toyota”.

“I’ll just rebadge” “not a big deal” “I didn’t like the trim anyways”

it’s okay to like Toyota and be disappointed in the initial rollout quality. There’s a lot of notes I have to look over for at my platinum delivery.

I belive only the plate under the windshield was mismatched and everything else was the same, pretty strange.

Thanks for posting that. I'm a retired Pro Tech and found that quite interesting. It's the first explanation of heard of what the problem is. Good job in applying 12V power to the actuator. I would do that kind of creative thinking as well but my buddy who is a Master Tech and worked in the stall next to me was always very cautious and would warn me of that type of shenanigans.

thanks so much for posting this! I would be curious to hear more details about what you observed on how it was binding.

Do you think the binding condition existed from day one or appeared/worsened after use?

    thanks again!

5 documented cases on this forum ? How many 2022 owners are on this forum ? Maybe that’ll give us an idea of the percentage of failures .

Wait until 2023 model year to buy once Toyota has the opportunity to dial everything in.

Good notes for some. I think supply chain issues and quality control challenges are here to stay for quite some time for cars, trucks, and many other sectors. There's no decent proof that first years have more issues than other production years. 2023 Tundras are going to have problems and the same folks on here will be waving their pitchforks, that certainly won't change. Personally I can't wait for my truck and every day I wake up and hope some nervous nelly backs out and I get their allocation.

QC issues from suppliers is always going to be a thing. QC issues at the assembly plant, paint, panel gaps, etc are all possible to dial in though.

This is a prime example of how not to do a cover up. Toyota staying silent on the failure rate means that people are going to speculate to fill the information void. Including some who will pretend to know something that others don't. Just human nature. We are a messed up species.

This is how it works. Repetitive issues with confirmed documentation. Engineer's, QC and Legal become involved. Why legal? Solely to protect the brand. Toyota better than most standby their products. I can assure the silence is founded in one of these areas. There is a problem, but not to the extent reported and the other is legal advice on acknowledging the problem.

Are there even 100 owners on this forum? It was clear to me how few people are actually on this forum with trucks when I started watching all the Facebook people showing their new trucks and this forum hadn’t had even one new truck owner.

I think there was a defect from day one that just took a few miles to actually cause the wastegate to bind up enough to set the code, when the turbo is replaced I will see if I can figure out why it's hard to move, the motor and the rod are connected directly to the wastegate valve so unless you take it apart you won't be able to tell which part is binding.

First person to actually talk about hands on with part in question and literally first response is some accusing him of a criminal act.

I change my tune. Toyota’s attorneys are right. The engineers should not be talking publicly. This is why.
