That is very disappointing. Toyota QC needs to be spanked!

Agreed! Total joke! A friend's dad put several of us through BMW's teen driving school at 16. That was proper driving school German style. Emergency lane changes, oversteer, understeer, panic breaking. Literally putting the car into a full spin at 70+mph. Almost yacked in the back seat. You don't get that at the DMV / Sears Driving School, but probably has saved countless lives.

Ever notice often the same friends are always saying they got into an "accident"? If you chance a ride with them pay attention to following distance, mirror scan, intersections, 10 and 2, etc.
90%+ of wrecks are negligence on the part of one driver. They aren't "accidents", they are negligent. Most sane countries yank licenses permanently from repeat offendors, but we see it as some sort of god given right and not a privilege.

You got us. Many of of us are pretty jealous of you. We actually can't afford to buy 2 of them to allow one to sit in the shop for weeks. I salute your success.

I could ask the same of you. None of us have any hard evidence and are speculating. The recently posted service bulletin makes it seem like Toyota is still investigating every bad unit.

    Sorry I worded that poorly.

    You said:

"I’m sure they’ve figured out how to diagnose the bad units now." & "service bulletin makes it seem like Toyota is still investigating every bad unit"

I just don't understand how that is really any different than what they have been doing all along if you are in fact implying Toyota is taking a new approach recently.

What I'm reading has been pretty consistent since day one:
    1. Code throws, truck goes into limp.
    2. Most owners gets their trucks towed in (some are close enough to make it in limp mode at +/- 35 mph)
    3. Tech pulls OBD codes showing one of several wastegate errors and consults with Toyota for recommendation for those codes
    4. TSB says: OBD Wastegate errors --> wastegate not serviceable--> order replacement turbo--> remove engine (some are not doing this apparently)--> remove almost brand new turbo and throw in garbage--> install replacement turbo --> Tell customer good luck and don't worry you still have X miles left on your warranty

I believe that is basically what's been going on since the first of these trucks came back with these wastegate codes. If there is a different approach today vs. the beginning, please elaborate. Sorry if I misunderstood. I am taking it that you are implying there has been a recent change to how Toyota is approaching this.

I am just not seeing a new "diagnosis" or "investigative process".
Certainly nothing indicates proactive approach trying to either identify or diagnose bad units prior to failure.

All I read appears the "diagnosis" or "investigative process" continue to be look the other way until the truck comes back on a wrecker with a broke motor. Then quietly replace the turbo(s) with appears to be same part that failed very prematurely for reasons known only to God (aka Mike Sweers).

Couple of years back. German driving test requirements for US forces. Review manual-quite thick. Pass 100 question test. Vehicle required inspection meeting minimum German Safety standards - makes our annual inspection ridiculous. German Citizens required to complete driving school-Waived for US forces. Certain people holding security type positions required to successful complete multiple driving course - life at 160MPH is quite fast. I had two cars used on daily basis; one German and one US. Both capable of 160+ speeds and very well protected.
Wife's first day on the Bahn as we rolled past an accident observing a car wedged in between large fork of a tree 15 feet off the ground. Have to agree, US Driving standards are ridiculous and most don't have a clue how to drive-IMO

My bad, my reply is worded badly. I meant they are QC’ing every single turbo now and sending out good units to the plant and to dealers for replacement. The diag has always been simple, that’s what the OBD is for. The reality is the turbo is good but for whatever reason the wastegate isn’t opening/closing as commanded, that’s what needs further diag by supplier and Toyota R&D.

To be fair, historically Toyota could be trusted, totally, with their new, redesigned models.
Apparently that’s up in smoke now....
And....in a way, seeing what they’ve done to that Tacoma, it checks.

Whoever is making the decisions in the truck world at Toyota, needs to be yanked. Now.

Just would be curious how they can QC the part if they don't know reason the wastegate isn’t opening/closing as commanded?

It’s pretty logical considering everything else we heard like 100% QC inspection in vehicles that we heard about from dealers.

My guess is they have a QC process to confirm the wastegate moves as commanded by the ECM. I’m sure there is one root cause for this problem but it’s hard to get the whole picture if you only have a couple of pieces of the puzzle.

I’m reading “pretty logical” and “My guess”. Not proof that Toyota is doing these things.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ We can infer a lot from the limited information available but we’ll have to see in the next few weeks/months to confirm that A. the number of wastegate CELs goes down and B. the turnaround time for those that do have CELs goes down

Tim is stating single digit % (1%-9%) of Tundras have been affected by the wastegate issue. Estimates that 25k-35k Tundra have been produced so far. Still not clear if the issue has been resolved for trucks that are being built today though.

Isn’t this the guy that is friends with Sweers? That’s how he got his door locked looked at so quickly by texting him I think? I wonder if he has a bit more detail on the issues than we do. 1% would roughly be 250-350 rigs. Upper end would be 2-3k.

Yeah....he was also the one arguing on FB the other night that the Tundra payload was equal to all others because the F-150 Powerboost he drove only had slightly more payload than his non-hybrid SR-5 and that everyone should listen to him because he's an "automotive journalist" and knows what he's talking about.......what a clueless, self-absorbed fanboy .

Shortly after being challenged his comments magically disappeared.

I'd say that he's guessing and spewing BS just like a lot of other people, he was also the one repeating the fake 0.01% just a few weeks ago.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guarantee that the failure rate for the wastegates is somewhere between 0.01 - 99.9%.

Speculation!!! The failure rate could be 0.001 or it could be 99.91%! Stop the misinformation campaign! Odds are you are correct though.

It saddens me to see new trucks with these types problems. New owners want to feel what many of us have known and loved for years... the complete confidence and joy of owning a SOLID Toyota truck. Unfortunately, there exists the fly in the mighty Toyota's ointment and it is far too late for excuses. I really hope that, just as quickly as these problems have unmasked themselves, that they will be soon be resolved and we can put this dropped ball behind us. To all that are having issues, hang in there and we are here for your support. Though there are poo-poo-ers that will bash to the end, the majority of members here just want to see all our brothers and sisters who buy a 22 to have as good, if not better, an experience with their new trucks as anyone here. C'mon Toyota! Give em what they deserve!!!
